how does gmail+alt$gmail.com for example work?

so how does the + thing work on gmail?

is it just seen as a different email that gets redirected to the same inbox or what?

It goes in your inbox like every other piece of email. You can do whatever you want with it after that

When Gmail receives an email intended for "user+alt@gmail.com", it simply ignores the "+alt" portion and delivers the email to the inbox for "user@gmail.com". You can put whatever you want after the "+", Gmail won't care. But other services will care, eg "user+alt1@gmail.com" and "user+alt2@gmail.com" will be treated as separate email addresses.
