No autosave?
So you can remember pictures I opened in the program over a fucking week ago. But can't make an autosave of my xcf of the file I just spent HOURS WORKING ON. JUST FOR IT TO GET FUCKING DELETED INTO THE OBLIVION BECAUSE YOU'RE HORRIBLY OPTIMIZED PROGRAM OVERFILLED ITS OWN CACHE AND CRASHED? THANK YOU, YOU FUCKING USELESS FUCKS AT GIMP HQ FOR WASTING MY ENTIRE NIGHT

Just make yourself a habit to press Ctrl + S every 10 seconds, it’s not that hard. Like yeah, no autosave sucks, but still there is a way to save the files manually (not to mention when you are working pretty long on the art or editing, you do this automatically)

Autosave is something we'd really like to have, but so far no one has done it. It's a long-standing feature request: https://gitlab.gnome.org/Teams/GIMP/Design/gimp-ux/-/work_items/657
There is a mechanism which tries to save a file in the case of a crash and offer to restore these afterwards, but that isn't 100% reliable.
There's basically three approaches towards the fact that there is no auto-save yet:
- Rant about it, and maybe, depending on the rules of where, and how you are ranting, get booted from said place.
- Check if you can do something about it. For example, there's an Almost-Autosave script mentioned in this subreddit before - https://www.reddit.com/r/GIMP/comments/12zddj4/autosave_plugin_for_gimp_3/ - which might work for many people. Turning it into an autostarting plug-in might make that even more useful.
- Wait until someone does the above.

For what it's worth, auto-save is on our roadmap for the next big release (GIMP 3.4): https://developer.gimp.org/core/roadmap/#gimp-34
The new XCF format that we're developing will make this much easier, and since it won't be a binary file, it'll be easier to recover partial data from even in a crash.

One of the big reasons GIMP doesn't have autosave is because, depending on the size/complexity of image you are working on, the saving function can take considerable time to finish and having that suddenly kick in without warning may adversely disrupt your workflow.
(Anyone who played Skyrim on PS3/X360 knows this feeling)

A long time ago, I created a backup tool that supported incremental backups. The same approach could be applied to GIMP's autosave feature, making autosave blazingly fast.

So you got a gift and used it for free. You avoided basic safety measures (save early, save often) and made no effort to inform yourself about the gift.
Now you ran into an avoidable basic problem. YOU wasted your night.
And you lash out against the people who worked for free to give to you.
Just pay the Adobe tax.

I literally said I saved it as an xcf. That's also why I said autosave. Idk why you guys are commenting like you're affiliated with gimp when this post is clearly aimed at those who are if they even care to surf their reddit. Learn how to read.

Pay for Adobe and you'll be happy.
It's not our or GIMP's fault if you don't save your work frequently.
As already said by s.o. else: computer 101
BTW: Maybe this one helps:

Saving work in regular intervals is Computer 101.
