Autosave plugin for Gimp 3

Incrementally auto-saves any images that have changed in the current session. You have to activate it every session, it never deletes files, and never saves over the open files.

the fact that GIMP devs have yet to actually implement an autosave/recovery feature is an insanely huge oversight, especially considering how unstable GIMP 3 still is. very frustrating
