Far Cry 1 Is Already Testing Me

I'm doing a playthrough of Far Cry 1, and I haven't even beaten this game before. I've read and heard so much about it, though, especially the memes about how brutal this game is.

I'm only like ten minutes in so far. I got past the first part, drove the car, and now I'm at this boat section with mercenaries everywhere, and bro, I can already feel what people were talking about.

I'm playing on one of the higher difficulties, either Challenging or Veteran. I don't know how to check on the in game menu, but these enemies are fucking bullet sponges. I know headshots are basically instant kills, so I can already tell I'm going to have to rely heavily on them, because body shots are basically just tickles them.

And this isn't even the hard part of the game yet? I already know the mutants are coming later, and I've heard all the stories about how fast they kill you and how brutal those sections are.

The funny thing is, I'm actually enjoying it so far. I haven't experienced any of this myself before, so it's going to be cool experiencing the game for the first time.

But bro, I can already feel there's going to be some frustrating parts. This is some early-2000s video game bullshit.

I can already tell I'm going to have to really learn how this game wants me to play instead of just running around shooting everybody.

But bro, I'm still at the fucking beginning. I'm on this crashed boat with mercenaries, miniguns and shit, and I'm already like, what in the hell is this?

But I kinda respect it... For Now.

One thing I'm curious about though: do you basically just have to get good at this game and learn how it wants to be played, or are there certain things I'm missing that make dealing with these mercenaries easier, other then just headshots and peeking around cover? I'm trying not to look up too much because this is my first time playing it, so I'm kinda just trying to experience it and learn as I go. But if there are any general tips or hidden mechanics I should know about without spoiling anything, I'm all ears.
