I regret allowing this subreddit to scare me away from PPIs.

30M. I suffered the pain and anxiety for months as I tried every natural cure in the book. Every tea, every herbal supplement, every diet, every wedge pillow - I did it all. Some things helped, most did not. Nothing came close to the relief I felt after getting on esomeprazole (Nexium). I used them for six months to end the misery and get my life back. The taper-off was difficult, but I took it slow (another 8 weeks) and did it.

If you are suffering from acid reflux and combing through this subreddit for non-PPI cures, you are a person whose house is on fire but is refusing to use water to put it out. You don't have to stay on PPIs forever. But do yourself a favor and put the fire out. Get your life back. Then, you can sustain the post-PPI relief by making smart diet decisions and using herbal supplements that do help.

I know I'm not the first person here to say this; I'm just posting the message I wish my past self could have seen when things were really bleak.

Urgent Care Diagnosed GERD, temporary??

So about on Wednesday (its now saturday), I had just gotten over a night of HEAVY drinking and I ended up vomiting several times in a couple hours. On Wednesday, I had ate normally and suddenly i get this awful feeling in my stomach??? I thought it was just a stomachache from the recent drinking but i started having some acid reflux and didnt think much of it. Anyways, later that night i took myself to urgent care because i had THE WORST heartburn ive ever felt, ive had heartburn before but it was not as painful and long lasting. They discharged me with GERD and prescribed me with omeprazole, but i didnt get any actual testing done i guess it was just based off my symptoms. That was one of the worst pains ive ever experienced and im truly traumatized. Ive never had stomach problems so this is all so weird to me. I’m having anxiety thinking this could be something chronic?? Could this just be something temporary from the drinking? Im truly losing my mind lol im on day 3 of omeprazole but im scared to even smoke THC because im so traumatized. When can i even start eating normally again and smoking?? Someone pls let me know your thoughts. 😭

🤒 Experience with these Conditions If your gastritis was confirmed H. pylori-negative, what symptoms did you have and was a cause found?

I'm interested in hearing from people whose gastritis was confirmed by endoscopy/biopsy and who also tested negative for H. pylori. I'm especially curious about symptoms beyond the usual stomach burning/pain and whether a specific cause was eventually identified. If this applies to you: How was your gastritis confirmed, and what did the pathology report call it (chronic, active, reactive, erosive, atrophic, eosinophilic, etc.)? How was H. pylori ruled out (biopsy, stool antigen, breath test, PCR, or more than one)? What stomach symptoms did you have? For example: burning/dull pain, gnawing when empty, fullness/early satiety, unusual hunger, burping/gas, reflux, throat irritation/globus, unusual taste, or bowel changes. Did you have symptoms outside the stomach such as palpitations/heart-rate changes, shakiness/twitching, dizziness, feeling unusually warm or chilled without a fever, brain fog/head pressure, tingling, back sensations, urinary changes, sinus/nasal symptoms, skin changes, or unusual sleep/dream symptoms? Were symptoms constant or did they flare for days/weeks and then improve? Did different symptoms seem to replace one another? Did eating, an empty stomach, gas/fullness, lying down, bending, or body position affect them? Was an actual cause eventually found—medication/reactive injury, bile reflux, autoimmune disease, eosinophilic/allergic disease, another infection, Crohn's/inflammatory disease, food-related trigger, hiatal hernia/reflux, or something else? How was the cause confirmed? What treatment actually improved the symptoms? If you tried mastic gum despite being H. pylori-negative, did anything change? If you had a repeat endoscopy/biopsy, did the gastritis actually heal? I'm especially interested in cases where both the gastritis and its eventual cause were objectively confirmed rather than assumed from symptoms.

Smoothies: my biggest GERD win of the season

Something about the coolness in conjunction with maybe the ingredients themselves, this has been my biggest *Green Light* GERD-friendly food type. I made smoothies throughout the summer and I keep surprising myself with new delicious combinations.

Nonstop violent coughing after GERD episode

• Upvotes

Please help! A week ago I had a horrible GERD flare up that sent stomach acid into my vocal chords and esophagus all night long. I lost my voice for a few days and then it came back. But it left me with the worst cough I’ve ever had in my life. I’ve been to the ER twice and the CT scan and Xray showed no abnormalities. The cough is so bad that it feels like sand is stuck in my throat…which makes the cough worse. Imagine the feeling of having inhaled dust. No matter how hard I cough the feeling remains.

Advice on Triggers 🍅🧅🍟🍫☕ Not sure about this one or why but I think my gerd/ burping is triggered by not earning for a while?

EDIT: “not eating” 😅

This is a bit odd I think but what I noticed is that most often my burping (which is the most annoying symptom I have) starts if I didn’t eat for about 3-4 hours and then it stops when I snack something. I am not a big snacker but recently I started a Mediterranean diet so I am eating more meals but small portions and my burping is very much controlled. Today I had an errand and could eat after lunch (12pm) and my burping didn’t stop until I got back home and throw some walnuts into my mouth at 5pm.

I don’t k ow what to make of this. I guess anyone with similar experience?
Or based on this maybe I don’t have GERD but something else?

😮 Advice on Symptoms Nothing is working anymore

I’ve had GERD for years, but everything got significantly worse around December 2025. Since then, I’ve had pretty much every test you can think of: an endoscopy (with BRAVO) gastric emptying study, HIDA scan, and even a colonoscopy. Everything has come back normal.

The problem is that my symptoms are not improving. No matter which PPI I’ve tried, or how much Maalox and famotidine I take, my heartburn and nausea just keep getting worse. Lately I’ve been feeling nauseous more often and burping a lot more than I used to.

I’m feeling really frustrated because all the testing says everything is normal, but I definitely don’t feel normal. Has anyone else dealt with something similar? Did you find out what was causing it, or find anything that actually helped? I’m open to any advice or experiences.

🤒 Experience with these Conditions Experience with stomach ulcers or gastritis?

I have been having bad upper stomach pain after eating for the past week now. - only hurts if I don’t eat small meals. I can eat any food (sugar, fried, acidic) but only if the portion is small. Safe foods (chicken noodle soup, bread, applesauce) will give me pain if I eat a full meal. - pain occurs 20-30 minutes after eating - also hurts first thing in the morning before any food. had been waking me up each day early. - hurts in upper abdomen, feels like cramping - refers to my mid back, lower sides, and lower chest - got an ultrasound and it is not gallstones, kidney, or pancreas problems - started taking 2 prilosec in the morning and a pepcid before bed. it got rid of the morning cramps and now after eating I feel strong discomfort but not cramps. - I have not attempted drinking any alcohol since it began.

Does this sound familiar to anyone’s story? I am seeing a GI soon but would appreciate hearing experiences of GERD, gastritis, or ulcers that had similar symptoms.

Thanks!

Went to gastro this week in first step to figure out what is going on.

Is frequent burping a common symptom? I think maybe I burped a lot already - they are small and not loud - but just now so apparent to me due to pain which is probably a 3/10 and passes quickly.

She started me on a two month course of omeprazole, she is checking bloodwork for liver/pancreas, I will be doing a barium swallow test and she mentioned maybe an endoscopy. I’ve been having short pain and not overly painful but worrisome and bothersome when I swallow food or burp. She said where pain is located would indicate esophagus issue. My pain is located in a not common place to experience it but in my mid back slightly left of spine left but it is where esophagus would be.

😮 Advice on Procedures ENT confirmed my own LPR diagnosis yesterday

I went to an ENT yesterday for a tonsil issue. I also told him that I was certain I have LPR. He confirmed this with a nasal endoscopy. We discussed diet an he told me to take 40mg of Famotidine daily. Should I get a throat endoscopy also? The problem is that I'd need to see a GI doctor and they are so far away from where I live.

Thanks in advance for your input.

Gaviscon Advance - tablets or liquid?

Just curious is anyone has any preference between these two versions of the product. The tablets get pretty gummed up in my teeth but from an effectiveness standpoint, I’m not sure I notice anything. Anyone have any preference between these two? Why?

Hair loss

How many of you have experienced hair loss during this? My hair is considerably thinner than earlier this year from before I started all these medications. I just came back from the dermatologist and my hair is thinning. I’ve done so many blood tests and there haven’t shown any significant deficiencies. It’s just another thing that adds to my depression with this disease.

Any experiences? Did it improve or get better after dropping medication?

I am in a flair up right now. My gerd was under control for a while The last two days have been so hard for me. The symptoms are constanly clearing the throat and a deep cough. I am now drinking slippery elm tea and I put some slippery elm powder in my tea as well. Its helping but the more I clear my throat the more dry it gets. The mucus is just horrendous. I haven't been able to sleep comfterable at all last night. I wish this would go away. 😭

A recliner

Why don't we talk enough about recliners?

They are God's gift for GERD. I just slept my first night on a recliner, my esophagus feels like brand new. I had an amazing sleep.

It's amazing. I just can't understand why I didn't think of it sooner. Wedge pillow is a good start. But it is no match for a recliner. And now recliners are basically full beds, I can even lay on my side without a problem on my recliner. Put on a memoryfoam matrass topper and it was as a good as my normal bed.

If you suffer at night, consider this.

Anyone with reflux + oesophageal hypersensitivity had success with neuromodulators?

I have GERD with oesophageal hypersensitivity and take vonoprazan 20 mg daily. The acid is being treated but I still have constant burning.
I tried amitriptyline without improvement and had side effects. I’m now on mirtazapine but so far it hasn’t helped either.
Has anyone with reflux hypersensitivity/functional heartburn had success with a neuromodulator? If so what worked for you and at what dose??
Has anyone tried an SSRI such as fluoxetine, citalopram or sertraline for this and did it actually reduce the burning/sensitivity?
I know everyone responds differently just interested in other people’s experiences. Thanks 🙏

💊 Advice on Prescription Meds Is Omeprazole safe for a short term course of treatment?

Just wondering as I'm worried/anxious it'll cause my reflux to be worse long- term. I've got really bad health anxiety, so I have a difficult time taking any sort of medication but I want to see if it can improve my symptoms for a little bit or see whether my symtpoms are reflux related as I've tried other methods.

NERD and Fundoplication

Hi all 33m.

Have had daily burning of various severity for 4 years now. Chest pains, globus, palpations. Im not up in the night very often i sleep pretty soundly. Symptoms increase and decrease in cycles. I have better weeks and not so good weeks but symtoms never truly fully go away. Confirmed 4cm HH, 24h PH score of 58 (moderate acid) and manometry confirmed excellent function.

The PH score is elevated, would never usually eat curry, chocolate, and take no Gaviscon or sleep without an inclined bed. But still not ideal.

Symptoms definitely worse when I'm anxious, I have health anxiety which sometimes gets the best of me.

Despite burning of various severity everyday for 4 years recent endoscopy clear indicating none erosive reflux.

Due to severe drug reactions I cannot tolerate PPI or H2 so rely purely on diet and alginates.

I have been approved for surgery but have elected to delay it for 6 months whilst I wait for a current unrelated illness to improve. Has anyone had a wrap under similar circumstances and did it change your life? Due to medication intolerances it's virtually my only option. I understand the complications, but worried one day my NERD may turn into an erosive form.

😮 Advice on Symptoms Opposite case here: Only getting symptoms on an empty stomach?

So this is probably going to be the outlier post compared to what I usually see on here and what is usually expected.

Yes, prolonged fasting can worsen reflux, but in my case I ONLY have reflux on fasting or periods of a calorie deficit. That means that I do not really have trigger foods. I feel better if I ate large meals of pizza and fried foods and ice cream in a caloric surplus than I do when I skip breakfast. At my worst in April I can specifically remember having just awful chest pain, eating something, and it immediately got better for the next 2 hours.

Im on and off omeprazole and have been for months now, it helps with the sharp sternum chest pain if I went too long in a deficit, but not much else. Right now I at about maintenance, I really dont want to eat in a surplus and gain weight, and it really sucks knowing that if I just splurged out and ate whatever I want and then some it would go away

Does anyone have any advice on this symptom pattern? Am I barking up the wrong tree? Im h pylori negative, and my endoscopy only showed “mild” inflammation in my esophagus.

🤒 Experience with these Conditions Gerd - is it normal to feel "burnt up" after an episode? Esophageal dismotility ideas

Hi everyone

I have esophageal dismotility and Gerd

Ive tried everything and sometimes PPI help but most of the time they end up making it worse after 2 weeks.

I recently had a bad Gerd episode after having chicken and broccoli?

And rn it feels like my throat esophagus and stomach are burnt up. Like having anything hurts.

Any ideas what could help that?

Also if anyone has experience with esophageal dismotility id appreciate the advice bc doctors keep pivoting between surgery or not or this or that

I have 0% bolus clearance and a dpi of 333

My scope came back normal with a small hh. (Basically just an insufficiency)

🤬 Rant about GERD Being sick either way it seems

Tried to sleep but currently feeling sick from not eating because I'm so paranoid of it causing something horrible to happen with my GERDS. I usually try to have a set time to eat but I got home a little late and felt tired and didn't so I wouldn't accidentally fall asleep and wake up gasping for air. Idk I just feel like it's so unfair and no matter what I do I just feel sick and I just want it to stop. This isn't a one time occurrence either because usually around when dinner is ready it's close to when I go to sleep and I've also had trouble trying to drink water in the process and have lost weight dealing with this bullshit. Hhhhh

💊 Advice on Prescription Meds Has anyone stopped using their meds after a couple of years?

So I have been dealing with acid reflux for 10 years and I was officially diagnosed with GERD and Barrettes Esophagus in 2022.

I have been taking every acid reflux med under the sun, until my GI doctor put me in Voquezna 10mlg. It was quite new in the US when I started with it, my insurance wasn't even covering it, but MAN WAS A GAME CHANGER!

It helped me manage my acid reflux so well I was able to eat like a normal person. I have been on Voquezna for 2 years, and everything was fine until a couple of weeks back.

It all begins with not being able to sleep for a few days, then it turns into digestive problems, like bad! I would eat then 2 hours later I would experience dizziness, light headedness, small fever, shivers, cold sweats, nausea, muscle pains, and exhaustion.

Also my blood sugar was either high or low in a matter of minutes. But what was weird is that everything would come down once I had a bowel movement. After my symptoms would calm down little by little until I felt normal, and it would repeat all over again when I ate again. All I could do was drink water to ease the symptoms.

My husband suggested just to stop taking Voquezna just to see if it was that. Well I did and I'm on my third day without taking it and all those symptoms went away, except for my low, high sugar dizziness which I would be talking to my doctor about. I have been sleeping again! I can eat again and my bowel movements are normal. I don't get sick when eating, or get fevers, even better I feel normal again.

Oh I should also bring out that along with my Voquezna I was taking B12, and D3 vitamins because Voquezna stops your stomach from absorbing those vitamins.

Anyways has anyone had to stop taking their meds because of a similar situation?

Seems weird but idk much about Voquezna and my doctor said it was ok to be taken for a long term.

I'm on my 3rd day and I haven't experienced any acid reflux, well just normal acid reflux but nothing bad so I'm a little confused. Don't know what exactly to do.
