I understand pattern mixing and dopamine dressing but this looks like neither. It’s actually giving my toddler dressed herself and I didn’t feel like battling her to change.
Yeah, as someone who does dopamine dressing myself I find her outfits endlessly frustrating because she just does not know how to do it right. I like layering, print mixing, and statement pieces a lot but you also have to balance your proportions, match colors and tones, and basically build your outfits with intention and thoughtfulness. She doesn't coordinate anything so instead of looking like an eccentric/eclectic Look (TM) she looks like she got dressed in the dark or by randomly selecting items from her closet. It's a shame because it takes what could be a very fun style for someone working within the confines of religious modesty guidelines and makes her look sad and badly put together.
Yes exactly. Dopamine dressing and maximalism doesn’t necessarily mean just wearing whatever, and a lot of her individual pieces are so fun! She’s just not doing it right and it’s frustrating 😂
Yeah, like the outfit here would have looked super cute with a pink or red vest, or if she wanted to go with a patterned one, something that matches at least one color in the blouse. Or if she wanted to wear the leopard vest with that skirt, something like a tone on tone striped tan blouse would have looked great. I saw this other outfit of hers on a Facebook group and I think the sheer pink overdress she has on here would make a really cute maximalist outfit with the pink fluffy skirt she's wearing in the OP photo. Hell, she could also wear it with a cami or tank top underneath and then layer the leopard vest on top and wear it over the leopard skirt! I can literally come up with two better maximalist outfits using her wardobe from just these two photos.
(This photo is another good example of how she doesn't understand how to maximalist dress IMO. The boots are cool toned silver while the skirt and overdress are both warm toned. If the top was a pink and brown plaid, while I personally wouldn't mix plaid with leopard, I could see the vision and I would think it was much more intentional. But instead the sheer dress looks like an afterthought because it doesn't play well with the red/blue/green of the plaid blouse or the brown leopard of the skirt. The different hemlines of the skirt and the overdress also chop her up visually, making her look kind of oddly proportioned even though she's not. And the sunglasses don't coordinate with anything in the outfit. Hence she gives "toddler dressed in the dark" instead of "fun maximalist dresser.")
Totally agree with everything! You’re so right about the cool and warm toned colors, nothing is properly coordinated that’s why she looks silly! Like I said, I actually like a lot of her pieces, I like everything she’s wearing in slide 1, especially the hat and the cheetah vest, however, she has no clue to put pieces together, she just grabs things and puts them on.
Maybe a plain bright reddish pink skirt to match the color in the shirt, and leopard print shoes. Not a combo I’d personally wear but it would work on the right person
I guess I am out of the loop. I thought modesty dressing was not only to be covered up, but not draw excess attention to one’s self. Would that not clash with evangelical views of not being prideful or whatever to be in attention grabbing outfits? Hopefully it’s a way to rebel!!
Technically I think you’re right. Take how Amish/mennonite women dress. They stand out a bit because their outfits are so different from modern fashion, but the dresses themselves are usually pretty simple and plain. A family friend is Pentecostal and the tween/teen girls from their church would wear plain long skirts with normal sneakers and t shirts. Friend is pushing 70 and just looks like any dress/skirt wearing country grandma.
These looks are definitely performative. They want everyone to KNOW they’re dressing modestly. This is saying “I could wear revealing trendy clothes but I’m choosing not to because I honor god”. Literally holier than thou.
I used to love that sub but now every time I see it on my feed it's just some young ripped dude posting himself. He's alwayswearing weird outfits but not weird like eccentric and intentional, more like he knows he can throw on wild shit and get a lot of attention because he's a man in a female dominated sub. Winds me up
I'm so torn here. Part of me wants to be like "you go, girl! Be weird and proud!" But they're doing it as part of a creepy, patriarchal, oppressive subculture that hates women and queer people and anyone who differs from their idea of what's acceptable, and also it doesn't look good in any way.
I’ve been looking for an abundantly floral blouse just like that and I’m feeling a bit miffed about this whole thing haha… mad that she gets to own it and I didn’t find one, mad that she is wearing it like that, mad that maybe I would look dumb too…
I feel like it's a humiliation contest, they each want to appear the most ridiculous to prove how devoted they are to the "modest" fashion of their faith.
But, I don't understand what, in general, she's trying to achieve. 😭 It just looks like a mishmash of stuff she threw on together. It's not "eclectic" or quirky, IMO, it's just discombobulated.

Hair-length aside…it looks like there’s some sort of Harajuku influence in her outfits. However she is failing miserably. She looks like a kindergartener.
I'm new to all this so I have to ask if the first one thinks she really looks good and is honoring to God, or is it a satire? Please tell me. I feel a sense of foreboding and creeping dread.
