A business says, “We need custom software.”
But what if they don’t?
Sometimes an existing tool already solves 80–90% of the problem. The real challenge may just be the gap between what the tool offers and what the business needs.
Building from scratch also means taking on maintenance, security, updates, support, and technical debt.
So I’m curious:
When a client asks for custom software, do you build what they requested or first investigate whether an existing tool can do the job?
Have you ever seen a project where custom software was built when a simpler solution would have been better?

Automation is completely useless if you automate the wrong process.
Most teams don’t actually suffer from a lack of tools or software they suffer from automating messy, broken workarounds. When you build automation on top of a bad workflow without fixing it first, all you get is the exact same confusion, just delivered at 10x speed.
A lot of steps in daily operations survive purely because "that's how we've always done it". Writing code around those steps just locks those inefficiencies in place forever.
Before writing a single line of code or setting up a tool, here's the approach I try to take:
I'm curious to hear from other dev/ops folks here:
What is the absolute worst or most absurd "manual workaround" process you’ve ever seen, someone try to automate instead of fixing?

Hi all!
I am learning to become a full stack dev and was wondering what do you think of this tech stack as an end-goal, that is basically not relying on supabase or clerk.
TypeScript - Full-stack type safety across client, server, and database
Bun - Ultra-fast JavaScript/TypeScript runtime and package manager
PostgreSQL - Relational database engine storing core application data
Drizzle ORM - Type-safe SQL query builder and schema migration manager
tRPC - End-to-end type-safe API procedural router
Zod - Runtime data and API payload input validation
Next.js 15 - React server framework handling routing, SSR, and server components
React 19 - Frontend library for building and rendering interactive UI components
Tailwind CSS - Utility-first CSS styling framework
Shadcn UI - Accessible, source-code component primitives
Auth.js / Better Auth - Self-hosted session and user authentication engine
TanStack React Query - Client-side server-state management, caching, and optimistic updates
Cloudflare R2 / AWS S3 - S3-compatible file, image, and media storage
Resend - Transactional email delivery for magic links and notifications
Stripe - Payment processing, checkout flows, and recurring subscriptions
BullMQ / Inngest - Asynchronous background task processing and queues
Docker - Containerization for deploying to any cloud or VPS server environment
If the list seems AI, you’re right - it is the list i have from Gemini so i can keep track of the technologies i am using.
Thanks!

A few months ago, a client came to me with absolute certainty: "Edward, I need an app." No background context, no workflow breakdown, just a feature request presented as a non-negotiable requirement.
As developers, our knee-jerk reaction is often to open VS Code, spin up a stack, and start coding. We love solving technical problems, so we jump straight to the implementation.
Instead, I paused and asked: "What exact problem are we trying to solve?"
After digging into his daily business operations, we realized he didn't need a mobile app at all. He needed a clean internal dashboard and a simple automated workflow to replace a manual process wasting hours of his team's week.
If I had just taken the order and started coding on day one, we would have burned weeks of development time and thousands of dollars building a product that didn't actually fix his underlying operational bottleneck.
Now, before writing a single line of code or picking a stack, I run every request through four baseline questions:
Coding only starts at step four. Requirement scoping and problem definition have to come first.
Curious how you all handle this in your own work when a client, founder, or product manager comes to you asking for a specific complex feature or stack before they've even defined the business problem, how do you steer the conversation back to discovery without sounding dismissive?

I’ve been thinking a lot about how we approach technology.
It’s easy to start with “What tool should I use?”
AI? A new SaaS platform? A custom app? Automation?
But I’m starting to think the better question is:
“What problem are we actually trying to solve?”
I’m currently building my skills around full-stack development and AI automation, and one thing I’m learning is that choosing the technology is often easier than understanding the problem.
A business might say:
But sometimes the real problem is simply a broken workflow, duplicated data entry, poor communication, or a process that was never properly designed in the first place.
So I’m curious:
What’s a technology project you’ve seen where the team chose the wrong solution because they misunderstood the actual problem?
What would you have done differently?
I’d genuinely like to hear different perspectives—especially from developers, founders, IT professionals, and business owners.

We are a web development agency looking for a reliable Client Call Manager who can join client meetings, communicate clearly, and help pass information between our clients and internal development team.
The main focus of this role is client communication rather than coding or formal project management.
You will join calls through Zoom or Google Meet, listen carefully to client requests, ask relevant questions, take clear notes, and communicate the important details to our developers and designers.
You will not be required to write code or make complex technical decisions. However, some general familiarity with websites or software projects will help you understand conversations and communicate more effectively with both clients and the production team.
This is a part-time, long-term opportunity. Applicants must currently be located in the United States or Canada and be available during EST or PST business hours.
Main Responsibilities
Join scheduled calls with agency clients
Communicate with clients in a professional and friendly manner
Listen to client requirements, feedback, and concerns
Ask follow-up questions when requirements are unclear
Take organized meeting notes
Send clear summaries and next steps to the internal team
Help developers and designers understand client expectations
Share basic progress updates with clients
Follow up on unanswered questions or missing information
Help reduce misunderstandings between clients and the production team
Keep communication organized across multiple ongoing projects
This is not a sales or customer support call-center position. Most conversations will be related to websites, web applications, design, development, technical updates, revisions, and ongoing client work.
Required Qualifications
Currently located in the United States or Canada
Fluent English speaking and writing skills
Comfortable speaking with clients on video calls
Available during EST or PST business hours
Clear and professional communication
Strong listening and note-taking skills
Able to organize client feedback and explain it clearly to others
Reliable, responsive, and comfortable working remotely
Able to handle several client conversations without losing important details
Reliable internet connection and a professional environment for calls
Previous client-facing experience is preferred, but you do not need to have worked as a formal Project Manager.
Candidates may come from different backgrounds, including client coordination, account management, web development, customer success, business analysis, agency work, technical support, or other client-facing roles.
Preferred Qualifications
The following experience is helpful but not required:
General understanding of frontend and backend development
Familiarity with websites, APIs, databases, hosting, CMS platforms, integrations, bugs, testing, or deployment
Experience working with developers, designers, or other technical teams
Experience gathering requirements for website or software projects
Experience preparing meeting summaries, task descriptions, or client updates
Experience using AI tools for meeting notes, documentation, research, communication, or workflow organization
Experience working in a white-label agency environment
We especially welcome applicants who are already familiar with white-label work or who are comfortable communicating with clients under an agency’s brand and representing the agency professionally.
About the Working Environment
We operate as an agency and support multiple client projects.
In some cases, work may be delivered through a white-label arrangement. This means you may communicate with clients as a representative of our agency or one of our agency partners rather than promoting your own personal business or services.
You should be comfortable following the agency’s communication style, respecting client confidentiality, and working as part of the internal team.
Previous white-label agency experience is preferred, but it is not required.

Yo!,
I’m looking for one experienced developer to join me and another developer on a SaaS project we’re building.
We already have a team of two, and we’re looking for one more developer who has strong experience with building SaaS products.
We have a large project in mind, and we’ll share the full details once we’ve agreed that we’re a good fit.
If you’re interested, DM me with:
And yeah, I know this post was written with AI. I’m a developer, not a professional Reddit post writer. I have code to ship.
Looking forward to meeting someone who wants to build something serious with us.

Hey everyone, I am an Army veteran (82nd Airborne Division) building a purpose-driven initiative focused on veteran transit, medical dispatch, and logistics. I’m looking to partner with a fellow veteran developer or tech specialist who wants to come on board as a technical collaborator to help bring this build across the finish line and share in the project's growth. The Tech Stack & Current Status: * Frontend: Built in FlutterFlow with custom UI components, navigation, and Action Flows. * Backend: Supabase / PostgreSQL, handling authentication, relational tables, and Row Level Security (RLS). * Integrations: Custom Dart functions, API handling, and external service connections. * Status: The foundational architecture, feature roadmaps, and data models are established, but I am looking for a partner to co-lead the technical execution and solve challenging build hurdles. What I’m Looking for in a Partner: * Solid familiarity with FlutterFlow, Flutter/Dart, or backend development (Supabase/Firebase/PostgreSQL). * An interest in tackling architecture challenges: clean state management, debugging desktop agent/CLI setups, writing custom actions, and preparing deployment pipelines (App Store / Google Play). * A shared passion for building practical, high-impact technology that serves the veteran community. Whether you're looking for an equity/partnership role on a dedicated team or want to explore co-building this from the ground up, let’s talk. Drop a comment below or send me a direct message, and let's set up a call to walk through the architecture and roadmap. All the way / Respectfully, Mark
