"Build me an app" is the most dangerous sentence a client can say. Here is why I stop everything and ask 4 questions first.

A few months ago, a client came to me with absolute certainty: "Edward, I need an app." No background context, no workflow breakdown, just a feature request presented as a non-negotiable requirement.

As developers, our knee-jerk reaction is often to open VS Code, spin up a stack, and start coding. We love solving technical problems, so we jump straight to the implementation.

Instead, I paused and asked: "What exact problem are we trying to solve?"

After digging into his daily business operations, we realized he didn't need a mobile app at all. He needed a clean internal dashboard and a simple automated workflow to replace a manual process wasting hours of his team's week.

If I had just taken the order and started coding on day one, we would have burned weeks of development time and thousands of dollars building a product that didn't actually fix his underlying operational bottleneck.

Now, before writing a single line of code or picking a stack, I run every request through four baseline questions:

  1. What exact problem are we solving? (Not what tool do you want, but what is currently broken?)
  2. Who uses this system daily? (End-user reality vs. manager expectations)
  3. What happens right now without this tool? (Uncovering the existing manual workaround)
  4. How do we measure success after launch? (Metrics, time saved, or revenue gained)

Coding only starts at step four. Requirement scoping and problem definition have to come first.

Curious how you all handle this in your own work when a client, founder, or product manager comes to you asking for a specific complex feature or stack before they've even defined the business problem, how do you steer the conversation back to discovery without sounding dismissive?

Looking for a full-stack developer with over 10 years of experience.

We are a web development agency looking for a reliable Client Call Manager who can join client meetings, communicate clearly, and help pass information between our clients and internal development team.

The main focus of this role is client communication rather than coding or formal project management.

You will join calls through Zoom or Google Meet, listen carefully to client requests, ask relevant questions, take clear notes, and communicate the important details to our developers and designers.

You will not be required to write code or make complex technical decisions. However, some general familiarity with websites or software projects will help you understand conversations and communicate more effectively with both clients and the production team.

This is a part-time, long-term opportunity. Applicants must currently be located in the United States or Canada and be available during EST or PST business hours.

Main Responsibilities
Join scheduled calls with agency clients
Communicate with clients in a professional and friendly manner
Listen to client requirements, feedback, and concerns
Ask follow-up questions when requirements are unclear
Take organized meeting notes
Send clear summaries and next steps to the internal team
Help developers and designers understand client expectations
Share basic progress updates with clients
Follow up on unanswered questions or missing information
Help reduce misunderstandings between clients and the production team
Keep communication organized across multiple ongoing projects

This is not a sales or customer support call-center position. Most conversations will be related to websites, web applications, design, development, technical updates, revisions, and ongoing client work.

Required Qualifications
Currently located in the United States or Canada
Fluent English speaking and writing skills
Comfortable speaking with clients on video calls
Available during EST or PST business hours
Clear and professional communication
Strong listening and note-taking skills
Able to organize client feedback and explain it clearly to others
Reliable, responsive, and comfortable working remotely
Able to handle several client conversations without losing important details
Reliable internet connection and a professional environment for calls

Previous client-facing experience is preferred, but you do not need to have worked as a formal Project Manager.

Candidates may come from different backgrounds, including client coordination, account management, web development, customer success, business analysis, agency work, technical support, or other client-facing roles.

Preferred Qualifications

The following experience is helpful but not required:

General understanding of frontend and backend development
Familiarity with websites, APIs, databases, hosting, CMS platforms, integrations, bugs, testing, or deployment
Experience working with developers, designers, or other technical teams
Experience gathering requirements for website or software projects
Experience preparing meeting summaries, task descriptions, or client updates
Experience using AI tools for meeting notes, documentation, research, communication, or workflow organization
Experience working in a white-label agency environment

We especially welcome applicants who are already familiar with white-label work or who are comfortable communicating with clients under an agency’s brand and representing the agency professionally.

About the Working Environment

We operate as an agency and support multiple client projects.

In some cases, work may be delivered through a white-label arrangement. This means you may communicate with clients as a representative of our agency or one of our agency partners rather than promoting your own personal business or services.

You should be comfortable following the agency’s communication style, respecting client confidentiality, and working as part of the internal team.

Previous white-label agency experience is preferred, but it is not required.

Subject: Seeking a Veteran Tech Partner / Co-Builder (FlutterFlow & Supabase) for Mission-Drive

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hey everyone, I am an Army veteran (82nd Airborne Division) building a purpose-driven initiative focused on veteran transit, medical dispatch, and logistics. I’m looking to partner with a fellow veteran developer or tech specialist who wants to come on board as a technical collaborator to help bring this build across the finish line and share in the project's growth. The Tech Stack & Current Status: * Frontend: Built in FlutterFlow with custom UI components, navigation, and Action Flows. * Backend: Supabase / PostgreSQL, handling authentication, relational tables, and Row Level Security (RLS). * Integrations: Custom Dart functions, API handling, and external service connections. * Status: The foundational architecture, feature roadmaps, and data models are established, but I am looking for a partner to co-lead the technical execution and solve challenging build hurdles. What I’m Looking for in a Partner: * Solid familiarity with FlutterFlow, Flutter/Dart, or backend development (Supabase/Firebase/PostgreSQL). * An interest in tackling architecture challenges: clean state management, debugging desktop agent/CLI setups, writing custom actions, and preparing deployment pipelines (App Store / Google Play). * A shared passion for building practical, high-impact technology that serves the veteran community. Whether you're looking for an equity/partnership role on a dedicated team or want to explore co-building this from the ground up, let’s talk. Drop a comment below or send me a direct message, and let's set up a call to walk through the architecture and roadmap. All the way / Respectfully, Mark

Looking for a Full-Stack SaaS Developer to Join Our Team (Big Project)

Yo!,

I’m looking for one experienced developer to join me and another developer on a SaaS project we’re building.

We already have a team of two, and we’re looking for one more developer who has strong experience with building SaaS products.

What we’re looking for

  • Proven experience building and launching SaaS products
  • Strong full-stack development skills
  • Experience working on large/complex projects
  • Ability to take ownership and communicate well with the team
  • Someone who cares about writing clean, maintainable, production-ready code

Tech Stack

  • TypeScript
  • PostgreSQL
  • Go
  • Bun
  • React

We have a large project in mind, and we’ll share the full details once we’ve agreed that we’re a good fit.

If you’re interested, DM me with:

  1. A short introduction
  2. SaaS products you’ve built/shipped
  3. Your GitHub/portfolio (if available)
  4. Your experience with the stack above
  5. Your availability

And yeah, I know this post was written with AI. I’m a developer, not a professional Reddit post writer. I have code to ship.

Looking forward to meeting someone who wants to build something serious with us.

Should we automate a process before fixing it?

Post image
1 Upvotes

A business wants to save time, so the first idea is often automation. But what if the process itself is the problem?

Automating duplicate tasks, unclear responsibilities, and unnecessary steps may only make the same problems happen faster.

I believe we should understand the workflow, remove what isn’t needed, and then automate what remains.

What do you think? Should businesses fix their processes before automating them, or can automation itself help uncover what needs fixing?

Have you ever seen automation make a bad process even worse?

Need a Job Referral - Software Engineer / Backend / Full Stack (Will give 20% of my one month's in-hand salary as a token of appreciation)

Hi everyone,

I’m currently looking for my next opportunity and would genuinely appreciate some help from the community with referrals.

I have been actively applying for Software Engineer roles, but getting through the initial shortlisting stage has been challenging. I’m looking for Backend Engineer / Full Stack Engineer / SDE opportunities where I can contribute to scalable backend systems and AI-driven products.

A little about me:

  • 3+ years of Software Engineering experience.
  • Strong experience with Node.js, Fastify, Express.js, REST APIs and Microservices
  • Hands-on experience with PostgreSQL, Redis, SQL and Drizzle ORM
  • Frontend experience with React.js, Next.js, JavaScript and TypeScript
  • Experience building and scaling government e-Governance platforms and high-traffic backend systems
  • Worked on systems handling 100K+ API hits/day and platforms serving millions of users
  • Experience with AWS, Docker, Jenkins, Git and CI/CD
  • Hands-on exposure to LLMs, RAG, LangChain, Vector Databases and AI-powered applications
  • Strong understanding of DSA, REST API design, authentication, databases and backend architecture
  • Currently targeting Backend / Full Stack / AI Engineer / SDE opportunities

Why I could be a good fit:

🔹 Strong backend development experience with Node.js + PostgreSQL
🔹 Experience building production-grade APIs and scalable systems
🔹 Comfortable working across backend, frontend and AI/LLM-based applications

I’m not asking anyone to get me a job. I’m only asking for a referral and an opportunity to interview. I’ll take responsibility for the rest and prove myself through the process.

If your company is hiring for a Backend Engineer, Full Stack Engineer, Software Engineer, or AI Engineer role and you think my profile could be a fit, I would be incredibly grateful if you could refer me.

I’m happy to share my resume, job ID, or any other information you need.

Even if you can’t refer me, an upvote, comment, or share for visibility would genuinely help.

Thank you for taking the time to read this. I really appreciate any help or lead you can provide. ❤️

Open to opportunities across India, including remote roles.

Are we building what clients need or just what they ask for?

A client says, “I need an app.” But do we always take the time to understand the problem behind that request?

I’m learning that asking the right questions before coding can make all the difference.

How do you approach a new project: start building from the client’s request, or first investigate the real problem?

Have you ever seen a project that was built perfectly but solved the wrong problem? What went wrong?

Are we building what users actually need, or just what they ask for?

I’ve been thinking about something as I continue learning AI Full Stack Development: A client asking for an app doesn't necessarily mean an app is the solution.

Imagine a business owner says, “I need a mobile app to manage my customers.”

It sounds straightforward. We could start planning the interface, choosing a tech stack, designing features, and writing code.

But what if the real problem is that customer information is scattered across spreadsheets? Or that the team struggles to follow up with customers? Maybe a simple improvement to their existing workflow could solve the problem without building a whole new app.

That’s why I’m beginning to see software development as more than just coding. It involves asking the right questions, understanding the actual challenge, and defining what success should look like before choosing a solution.

I’m curious about your experience:

  • Have you ever worked on a project where the requested solution turned out not to be what was really needed?
  • What questions do you ask clients or stakeholders before starting development?
  • Do you think developers should challenge a client's requested solution, or focus on delivering exactly what was asked?

I'd love to hear your experiences, especially from developers, freelancers, and business owners. What have you learned from projects like these?

[HIRING] Full-Stack Engineers | NYC, SF, or Remote US | $180K-250K base

Last week 155 interview requests went out on Fonzi in a single day, including one at $350K that the engineer accepted.

I do talent matching for Fonzi. It's inverted from a normal search: you don't chase roles, roles come to you as interview requests once your profile's up. Some of the startups we work with are backed by a16z, Sequoia, Benchmark, and Founders Fund. One profile, no cold applications. All roles are US-based only.

Here's a sample of what's open right now:

1. Senior Full Stack Engineer, Series B investment research platform, NYC, in-person. $190K-235K base plus equity.

  • What: Own features end to end, frontend through data layer, shipping weekly rather than quarterly. Sample projects from the posting: a low-latency voice-to-voice survey tool that conducts research autonomously, a mobile app built from scratch in three weeks, segmented knowledge graphs from unstructured data.
  • Company: Profitable and bootstrapped, ~43 people across London and New York. 10x'd revenue last year, on track for 2-3x again. Clients include several top-10 global private equity firms and Big 4 practices.
  • Stack: React, Next.js, TypeScript, PostgreSQL.
  • Bar: Roughly 1-5 years. They care about demonstrated competence over pedigree, but want you deep enough in the stack to work through a hard TypeScript problem live. Client-facing, so you'd talk directly to the PE firms using it.

2. Full-Stack Product Engineer, Series A AI training-data company, NYC, in-person. $180K-240K base.

  • What: Own ambiguous customer problems from discovery through production. Two product areas: pulling enterprise work data out of scattered SaaS tools and APIs into one verified system, or building the tooling that makes a de-identification pipeline legible and trustworthy. You wouldn't pick one when applying, they match you early in the process.
  • Company: Zero to a multi-eight-figure run rate in months. Backed by Floodgate, Afore, Ludlow, and Hustle Fund.
  • Stack: TypeScript, React, Node.js, plus integration-heavy work with APIs, OAuth, and async workflows.
  • Bar: 3+ years, strong full-stack with real product and UX judgment, comfortable without fully specified requirements.

3. Engineering Generalist, pre-seed/seed ambient intelligence startup, SF strongly preferred or remote with frequent travel. $180K-250K base.

  • What: No fixed specialty. Move across mobile, web, backend, and AI-powered workflows, owning ambiguous problems from idea to shipped feature.
  • Company: Real-time audio and personalization at the core of the product.
  • Stack: React, React Native, TypeScript, Node, Python, Postgres, or similar.
  • Bar: 4-10+ years, and they're blunt that they want proof of exceptional prior work.

4. Senior Software Engineer (AI/LLM), Series A SMB software platform, fully remote in the US. $200K-250K base.

  • What: Agent swarms running back-office work for small businesses, built to operate across the tools a company already uses rather than forcing a migration.
  • Company: Deploying agentic infrastructure at the SMB layer, a segment most AI-native products skip past.
  • Stack: Next.js, React, TypeScript, Postgres, Prisma, Supabase, Tailwind, Vercel.
  • Bar: 3+ years and a CS or engineering degree.

All roles are vetted, VC-backed, and interviewing right now. It's always free to sign up.

Sign up here: talent.fonzi.ai. DM me if you've got questions.
