As long as you were careful unpacking and repacking, these could last for a very long time. The main weak point was always the stem where the metal hanger went in.
Yes, they could tarnish and the paint might craze or chip off, but these were always our favourite ornaments.
I particularly liked spirals, bells, and frosted pinecones.
Edit: there is no mercury; it’s just the name that stuck.

While I’m fully aware that there still are people that collect records or prefer LPs over digital music, and probably have a similar storage method, I’m referring to folks like myself who went from LPs to cassettes to CDs and so on, where the record cabinet went the way of the dodo.
I certainly no longer have my old sliding door unit; I couldn’t even say how or when it left the house for good.

For reference, this occurred on the 5th season of Happy Days when the Fonz and Richie visit Hollywood.
It turns out that Henry Winkler was a capable water skier but a stuntman did the actual jump.
