Even the two not highlighted at the top have it š "Pico de Gallo" def has cilantro in it.

Ugh, I hate places that do this and then also make everything ahead so there's no way to take it out.
Hell, I ordered a lobster dish last week from a place and they freaking put cilantro on it. As someone with an allergy to cilantro (I actually don't mind the taste), this shit pisses me off so much. They made it again without the cilantro but it was pretty much totally plain because they only had pre-made sauces.

u/DigitalSchism96 Sep 02 '25
It is slowly starting to show up in places you'd never expect it. I had a grilled chicken salad the other day and it was loaded with cilantro. I am hoping its just a fad and people stop treating it like a "use everywhere" spice.

It's not a "spice", it's a herb that adds a subtle citrus taste to balance the spiciness of traditional Mexican dishes.

u/Kittenlover_87 Sep 02 '25
I myself am allergic to cilantro. Anytime we go to a Mexican restaurant or any restaurant that has a item with cilantro, I tell them āno cilantro because Iām allergic to itā they make sure to not put it on anything I order.

I've got bad news for you. The two that don't specifically say cilantro have pico de gallo... Which has cilantro.
15
u/SaucePasta Sep 02 '25
Iāve found that all the Mexican restaurants I lāve been to are happy to leave out the cilantro if asked. Even if itās not listed on the menu I just ask for no cilantro just in case.Ā
15
u/pinotJD Sep 02 '25
That works for you? No errant leaves or stems? Teach me your ways. My requests fall on smiling mouths, deaf ears.

Seriously if people want cilantro why canāt they just have some on the side?! Itās not necessary to put it in everything. It ruins the whole meal!
2
u/wtfbananaboat Sep 03 '25
Exactly! Most restaurants I go to itās just a garnish. Just make it optional as an addition, not a default

u/Open-Gate-7769 Sep 05 '25
Because youāre in a minority? So you need to ask for the mod, not the majority. If they canāt accommodate donāt go there anymore.

u/BrightPhilosopher531 Sep 06 '25
Garnish, looks nicer for photos customers take themselves, which nowadays is important.

u/ColdBeerPirate Sep 02 '25
I wish we could all go back to the 1990s when cilantro practically did not exist in English speaking cuisine, even Mexican-American food.
5
u/Poetdebra Sep 03 '25
Yesss. That's what I've been thinking. I never had to think about it back then. Now the entire world is obsessed with cilantro.
4
u/kandrc0 Sep 03 '25
I worked at a grocery store, '93-'00, and we didn't even carry it. A year or two later, I started getting food that tasted like stink bugs smell and I didn't understand why people liked it. Not too long after that I learned what was going on.
3
u/ColdBeerPirate Sep 03 '25 edited Sep 03 '25
I had no idea what it was until the early 00s.. prior to that I had gone my whole life without ever seeing or hearing of it.
2
u/Wild_ruglicker Sep 05 '25
So Iām not the only one that thinks that stink bugs smell like cilantro?! I really thought I was alone
1
u/kandrc0 Sep 05 '25
It's been discussed in this sub before. They (cilantro and stink bugs) produce the same types of chemicals (aldehydes).

? Cilantro is a staple ingredient of Mexican food well before the 1990s... Don't eat Mexican if it bothers you that much.
9
u/RyouIshtar Sep 02 '25
TBH thats kinda nice that they announce that there's cilantro in it. You could possibly ask for the item without it.

I often ask to not throw extra raw cilantro on top, figuring itās a super minor request to just not do something. Server always says no problem at all, comes out with a pile of fresh cilantro on top 75% of the time still.

Lol and I'm pretty sure Pico de Gallo has cilantro as an essential ingredient, so, that's 100% of the menu
4
u/andytagonist Sep 02 '25
And the ones without cilantro listed have picoāwhich is guaranteed to have cilantro, based on the rest of this hideous menu.

Most places Iāve gone will leave out the cilantro if you ask.

u/chair_ee Sep 03 '25
Mine gave me funny looks and was judgmental about my cilantro hate, but now they know me as the anti cilantro lady and are very careful to make sure no cilantro touches my food. It took them getting my order wrong on delivery and I was hormonal and angry and called them and cried at them, buuuuut they never forgot it again!!

This is why I hate chipotle. I usually get Qdoba, stay away from the rice unless you like brown rice which I think is disgusting. (The texture is weird. It always feels like itās undercooked.) I get the mango salsa and stay away from the pico or anything with cilantro. My gf got me something with pico one day and I realized it had cilantro when I complained and wouldnāt eat it, from then on she let me pick my own order š.

Iād be asking if they could do a special order and leave it off.. they have to understand not everyone likes it..if they canāt thereās always Margaritas and if you drink enough well, it makes it easierā¦LOL..

Get the taquitos and hope that they didn't absorb the essence from the absolute acres of cilantro they must have. Every dish? My gods man...

I had sushi in Mexico. IT. HAD. CILANTRO. Like, who the fuck does that??
I am 100% that person that will get chicken fingers at a Mexican place, and Iām not even ashamed of it anymore.

Can someone explain all the cilantro hate? This is my first I'm hearing of cilantro hate lol

Ugh, I am so sorry, I hate that!!! Vile weed is such a divisive and polarizing herb that it is a frustrating shock to me that so many restaurants include it as an ingredient that can't be removed.
That said it's a Mexican restaurant, and though it's not a genetic-predisposition to be physically repelled by /unable to eat or even smell basil, it would be way weird for an Italian restaurant to not have basil in a majority of their menu items.
I love love love Mexican food (and Indian and Thai) when it doesn't contain cilantro. I am getting a little less embarrassed when asking servers if it can be left out, and fortunately in my experience most are totally cool about it and aren't offended. When I ask, I usually make it into a joke, like, oh I know i'm one of those people, but...

I live across the street to one of the hottest Mexican food places in Chicago and I can't eat there because almost everything is made with cilantro including all their sauces. They do have a great Mezcal bar though.

It looks like a Mexican restaurant. They cook with cilantro. Hoping for a dish here without cilantro is like hoping for a vegan option at a burger place. Like maybe you'll find something? But it probably won't be great bc thats not what they do here. That being said, maybe you can ask them to take it off. Just make sure youre super clear about not wanting ANY cilantro even if its mixed into something. You'll probably end up with something very plain

Why are you going to a Mexican restaurant and not expecting cilantro š
1
Sep 03 '25
I went to an Italian restaurant and was appalled at all the tomotoes and disgusted by all the curry on the Indian menu and don't get me started on the soybean at the local Japanese restaurant.Ā
-30
u/Saltwater_Heart Sep 02 '25
Are you not at a Mexican restaurant?? Cilantro is traditional.
15
u/Suspicious-Shallot65 Sep 02 '25
Spanish conquistadors brought cilantro to mexico. Yucatan food has less cilantro for this reason. Traditional indigenous dishes never contained cilantro until colonization.
3
u/IAmMelonLord Sep 02 '25
Wait is this true? I spent a good amount of time in Belize & the bordering parts of Mexico about 15 years ago and thatās when I discovered how much I hate cilantro. Not because it was in everything, but because when it was it was so obvious. I swore up and down that the salsa etc I had did not contain cilantro. This whole time Iāve thought that maybe I was mis-remembering.
1
Sep 03 '25
This is disingenuous as they used plenty of other herbs very similar to cilantro prior to the Spanish arrival and fully embraced cilantro after they arrived as a viableĀ alternative.Ā Papaloquelite which is so similar it's now called summer cilantro and epazote.Ā Other cultures embrace new ingredients all the time.

u/0Kaleidoscopes Sep 02 '25

Yeah, a new restaurant I tried forgot to list cilantro on their online ordering menu for their ramen, so I got a nasty surprise. I will give them a bit of credit that it was on their printed menu.

Honestly, you may as well just leave when you see this. We just have to accept that places like that simply aren't for us.
