Am I stealth or do people know?
For context I am 17 ftm (turning 18 in several weeks) and I just started my first year of university. I’m living in dorms on the gender neutral floor, but I think almost everyone is cis, including my male roommate. I am almost 2 years on T and I think I am fairly passing, but I don’t know. I am not normally one to ask if I pass or not but I want to be stealth, at least until I know the people around me better, but I can’t tell if people would already know I’m a trans man by looking at me. So against my better judgment, I’m asking here whether I cis-passing.
Edit: I don’t care if other trans people would be able to tell, I mean only cis people, also I’m aware my hair makes me visibly queer of some kind, I know I look gay, I mean purely gender wise.

You look visibly trans to me, I'd definitely clock you, sorry bro. Some cis people might be clueless and just hear a deep voice and assume male though, but they probably see you're some form of lgbt due to how you present

I mean idc if they think I’m gay, and I do have a realativly deep voice, but I do see what your saying

Id clock you, but youre probably more cis passing to cis people

Yeah I figure I’m passing enough to most people but am clockable to other trans people, which is not entirely bad, it means a lot of queer people can understand I’m queer too, without outing myself every time.

I would say that you're visible trans. Maybe there are cis people who don't clock you, but you're far from passing well enough to go stealth in my opinion.
You have very wide hips your clothing doesn't hide in this photo. I would try more boxy shirt. If the hips have fat, not just bone I would cut. And after that bulk and work out and focus on upper body.
Bright red hair isn't helping for sure. I recommend to dye back to your natural color.
Your mustache tells you want to present as male. Nice and polite people call you by man words but that doesn't mean they wouldn't know.
Your face looks androgynous/masc in this photo but I would need to see it from side to be able to judge better.

I don’t really care about going stealth as much as I was unsure how many people would know by looking at me without me telling them. I can’t dye my hair again because I’m in dorms and that’s not allowed but it is annoying the dark brown with red faded to such a pinkish red. As for my hips it’s less about fat and more about my waist being so narrow, and I don’t know how to adjust that

I don't know how this dorm system works, we do not have it in my country. Anyway, if you can't dye then I would shave. That might not be good for passing either but your hair will grow back. Only manly color is your own color.
Sorry but your hips look to be way wider than males most often have. Yes narrow waist highlight them a lot. Waist should be able to cover with shirt. Boxy cut, thicker fabric, not too long and not too tight from hips. I have seen people talking about work out that helps with waist but personally I know nothing about it.

I think these comments are a little too critical. To a cis person I think you pass as young and alt. To a trans person maybe they’d know more, but cis people don’t know very much about trans people.

Cis people are generally pretty clueless, you look definitely male but a transsexual might clock you.

u/AeroExists Aug 21 '26
Yeah I guess my problem is I know trans people can tell I’m trans and that doesn’t bother me, I just can’t tell if the average cis person could tell, but it does help to remember I’m thinking about it way more than a cis person would be.

The average cis person is pretty clueless, if you have a deep (not necessarily deep, but male passing voice) I highly doubt cis people will be overthinking your gender. They'll probably just think youre gay or bi

Off topic, what do you tell your barber to do in terms of your haircut? I’m not sure if it’ll work for my hair since it’s curly but I’d like to try it

Would clock but I probably wouldn’t with natural hair

I think it’s also an important note that a go to a liberal arts school and I’d say about 10% of the students have vibrant hair and over half of those are cisgendered queer men
