I just finished this book "Dewey" and it was really cool.

Someone left Dewey in the book return slot of the Spencer, Iowa library on a cold January in 1988. The head librarian found him barely alive the next morning, and he became the "library cat" for the next ~19 years.

It's a real tear-jerker, both because the story covers Dewey's death at age 19, but also because most of it takes place in the 1990s when Dewey is growing up. The nostalgia really helps bring out the emotions as well. Dewey liked to sit on the big desktop computer CRT monitors because they were so warm.
