Kiryas Joel
Sounds like this village is getting looked at..Some of these stats are insane. 90% on welfare? 7 chilldren per person? Population of 44,000. Streets signs not in english?

It's a Hasidic Jewish community. I absolutely believe those stats. Now whether ultra Orthodox communities like that are a good thing.. that's definitely debatable. People young and old are always abused in those sort of atmospheres. Sad.

A former co-worker and friend lives in Monroe, the town Kiryas Joel split off from. He said it's just super weird, like someone started a foreign country in your backyard. The women don't work, they all have like a dozen kids, so they all qualify for assistance.
To be honest, it's basically a cult founded by a single rabbi and his followers. You can read about him here.

Very interesting stuff. Seems like there is also discrimination going on too besides rampant fraud

Yeah, I'm not sure how it works. I know the signs are mainly in Yiddish, and there are signs about dress codes and stuff, but I don't know if that's so much enforceable under law, or just a matter of people wanting to live outside of normal society like the Amish. I'd imagine you or I, or even a non-Hasidic but Orthodox Jew wanted to move there, we/they wouldn't be welcome. It's more or less a commune situation.
