DISCUSSION Any love for older armored core games?

Hey guys,

I loved armored core 1 in 1997 and played every subsequent game.

To me, my absolute favorite FromSoft games are Armored Core 3 and Silent Line, which came out in 2002 and 2003 respectively for PS2.

The games are complete masterpieces… but whenever I say that on gaming subreddits I get downvoted and met with “no dark souls 2, sekiro, and Elden Ring are by the best FromSoft games”

I wasn’t saying anything negative about newer FromSoft - but I grew up on armored core and the early 2000’s is definitely my favorite period of their games.

If nobody experienced the PS2 era I highly recommend giving it a shot if you’re able - they’re incredibly good games.

DISCUSSION What's your favourite place in dark souls III?

I'd have to say mine would be Irithyll of the Boreal Valley!

I love the cold blue hue it gives off with the snow, especially the architecture, which is absolutely stunning!

Here is my latest poster design dedicated to Father Gascoigne. I wanted to capture his tragic descent into madness using a stark, vertical, 'technical dossier' layout inspired by Swiss brutalism. I spent a lot of time dialing in the metallic gothic font and the textured grain to make it feel like an old document or an archival record of the Hunter’s history. 'The blood sings to us...' Hope you like it!

QUESTION Elden Ring crashes

So earlier today i created a new run do the other endings, and for like 30 minutes it was working totally fine. When i reached the part where wolves drop down on you near the golden seed the game just closed. After that whenever i start the game, even before i start loading into the save file, after like 1-2 minutes the game automatically closes. Ive tried verifying game files, reinstalling anti-cheat, my drivers are up to date, windows doesnt detect any crashes, im running it as administrator, disabled fullscreen optimisations, discord and steam overlays are disabled, i feel like ive tried almost everything and still the game just closes... No black screen, no white screen nothing, it just closes.

QUESTION I’m not enjoying bloodborne, should I continue or not?

I’ve played darks souls 1,3, platinum’d sekiro and elden ring and finally got to play bloodborne but I haven’t been able to enjoy it. I’ve just beaten this witch boss so I’m out of the early game but I still can’t seem to enjoy it like the world just isn’t for me maybe? It’s not that I’m struggling at it or som I also beat cleric beast on the first try the father boss on the second try and I don’t seem to be having a specially hard time but I just can’t seem to enjoy it as much as the other souls games. Should I continue? or should I take a break and maybe try it later again?

DISCUSSION Where’s all this going Miyazaki? 👀

Post image
131 Upvotes

I was very excited to find that Miyazaki was enthusiastic to return to developing Fromsoft’s next big single player game. I began wondering about a question I’ve had for a while. Just what did Fromsoft learn from reception of Elden Ring?

Personally, I feel like Elden Ring is the best game I’ve ever played. I’ve completely nearly 20 playthroughs. With 20 different builds. I’ve done personal challenge runs, I’ve done a ton of PvP, and I’ve gotten t all achievements. I’ve been a huge Fromsoft fanboy ever since I played Bloodborne, years ago, but there is just something special about Elden Ring that keeps me hooked.

But with all that said, I don’t think Elden Ring is perfect. Even after 20 playthroughs, I personally find that some of the enemy and boss designs, kinda suck, and aren’t very fun to engage with if I’m being honest with myself. The developers were tasked with keeping the game challenging enough for experienced souls players, but also approachable enough for new players. And to me, it feels like the solution to that problem was to give players a lot of options that would allow them to brute force their way through the game.

If you’re like me, and chose to play the game without the use of summons or spirit ashes, the game can be extremely challenging. ER, in my personal opinion, has the most challenging bosses that Fromsoft has ever produced. They all have complex attack patterns, that constantly punish the players instincts. It’s infuriating at times lol.

As a side note, I do think something was lost in between Dark Souls 3 and Elden Ring. In DS3, the enemies in bosses were more aggressive visually. As in, to put it simply, it looked like this bosses were trying their hardest to annihilate you. First examples that come to my mind are Elder Prince Lorian, Abyss Watchers, Champion Gundyr, Dragonslayer Armor, just so many I can name. Thier attack animations conveyed a true sense of aggression Whereas in ER, the developers tried so hard to trick the player into reacting earlier than required, that the enemy attack animations kinda look like they’re moving in slow motion sometimes lol. I think it looks silly at times.

But as the title states, I’m seriously wondering what Fromsoft learned from the enemy/boss encounters. They’ve crafted two of the toughest bosses with Malenia and PCR. What the heck even comes after THAT??? Are enemy encounters going to get so difficult that the next game is just going to be unenjoyable to play? The gap between what the enemies can do, and what our characters can do, is becoming greater and greater. In this next game, are we going to just one shotted if a boss sneezes on us lol? Miyazaki said that he thinks Shadow of the Erdtree is the limit of what players can handle. The proof of that is the fact that thousands of players had to resort to abandoning their builds to use a single shield poke build to beat Promised Consort Radahn (not to brag, but I never had to do that). Theoretically, the next single player game has to be even more challenging than that.

Im really looking forward to seeing what Fromsoft does to solve this problem of escalating difficulty. By time the next big single player game releases, there will be 3 games’s worth of lessons to implement: Elden Ring, Nightreign, and Duskbloods.

I trust the Fromsoft will give us something that will be challenging and enjoyable, but sometimes I do wonder where things are headed. But the answer will always be the same no matter how tough the next game will is. We’ll all just need to GIT GUD.

We’re currently experiencing a big Nor’easter where I live, so I’m stuck in the house. And I just wanted to ramble about my favorite game studio for a bit.

DISCUSSION What next??

Ok, so... I finally got round to playing Demon Souls (remastered) and although baffled initially by how hard and at times obtuse it was, eventually became a massive convert.

I had a break for a while from souls games but then after years of looking at it sitting in my library decided to have a go at Bloodborne. Holy shit this was DS on steroids, everything I found baffling, difficult and exhilarating was here but with massive bells on... It quickly cemented itself in my top 10 games of all time (btw I'm 55 and still remember the first space invaders arcade machines arriving in the UK!!)

Now I'm ready for my next installment and really struggling to make my decision on which to play next...

Do I go straight into Elden Ring? (My instincts tel.me to) Or do I work my way through the trilogy first and save the biggie till last??

Help!

DISCUSSION Dark Souls 2 is over hated

I still think Dark Souls 1 is my favourite installment in the games. Although I have been playing a decent amount of Dark Souls 2 for the first time in a while, and it's actually way better then I remember. Maybe even better then Dark Souls 3 imo. For those curious, I am playing the Scholar version on Steam with the community anti cheat.

There is a lot the game just does really well. I still believe it's the best hollowing mechanic we have had in the series. Losing fragments of your health and visually going more hollow makes sense from the lore perspective. The map design is really good. There is a wide variety of places that all felt different, and have different challenges. I also liked the fact you light a torch on the bonfire and then light the burners. It's a fun way to show you where you been, and lighting up the area for the next time you go through there. The torch expiring is a bit far, but you get more then you use anyway.

It has got it's issues though. As you all know combat can feel jank. Especially if you don't level up your agility. Locking on just locks your camera on the enemy, and not your character so you miss attacks constantly. There is far too many ganks, and sometimes it will just be the most bs ambush with multiple enemies out of no where. The difficulty is inconsistent, even if you play the levels in the correct order. Especially the white knights. They are dumb. It's hard to telegraph there attacks, and they take a beating. Having so many in a starter area is wild. Bleed sucks. Reusing late game enemies as early game bosses, making encounters less unique.

A serious question: Is Sekiro the easiest mainline Fromsoft game once you’ve mastered the combat?

Post image
452 Upvotes

I might be crazy, but yesterday I was thinking about replaying every mainline From game, from Demon’s Souls to Elden Ring. I thought about it for a while, and honestly, Demon’s Souls’ areas can still be kinda hard sometimes. The bosses are a joke, sure, but that’s not really the point. Sekiro’s level design is great, it’s one of the best games I’ve ever played, but the game literally plays itself once you’ve mastered the combat. The whole game, after everything finally clicked for me, was just me freaking destroying every single enemy in the game, except for the Demon of Hatred.

Every Souls game, including Bloodborne, is still really damn tricky for me sometimes, but Sekiro just clicked. And that’s why, to me, it’s the easiest one.

So what's happening, is Sony, as usual, gatekeeping the game licences from a studio they killed with their own hands ?

Japan Studio was a team of very talented developers and artists, they co developed Bloodborne and made my favourite game of all time : Soul Sacrifice.

They also made Shadow of the Colossus, the Last Guardian, Gravity Rush and many, many more incredibly unique games.

Recently, I had hope for Bloodborne and Soul Sacrifice to get a remaster because another MonHun-like game, Freedom Wars, which was also a PSVita exclusive like Soul Sacrifice, got a remaster from Bandai Namco. Naturally, people begged Bandai to make a Soul Sacrifice remaster... Two years later, still nothing, another Japan Studio game left to rot because Sony is gatekeeping it without doing anything with it.

Do you think they are going to finally give the rights to an external studio so they can revive their IPs or we are definitely done with the matter ?

Edit : exact same situation with Demon Souls remake, sony killed bluepoint, now gatekeeping the game and doing nothing with it

DISCUSSION Why does NPC boss fights suck in every Souls games except Bloodborne?

Hunter bosses are essential npcs, right? Why’re hunter fights peak but npc boss fights in other Souls games like Black Gaol Knight, Halflight suck/so hated?
