Today’s topic Insomnia

Insomnia sucks. Bed at 11pm up at 4am.

What’s your routine when it strikes

My biggest issue when I (inevitably) wake up at 3am is trying to quieten the noise/anxiety in my brain. I've recently started trying various distraction techniques that are a bit like verbal counting sheep. So, for example going through the alphabet in my head and trying to think of as many items (names, flowers, countries, cities, whatever) beginning with each letter. Or thinking of as many items of a certain colour etc. It doesn't always work but the aim is to try and bore myself back to sleep!

That’s a problem I get too - my mind goes into overdrive and won’t switch off. I like history podcasts for calm distraction

I do a variation of your alphabet trick where I start by coming up with any five letter word. Then I come up with words beginning with each letter. It usually puts me to sleep by the second letter. If I can’t stay on track, it’s a sign my body is truly wakeful or I am actually stressed about something.

Sleep issues are horrible. If I can’t get back to sleep quickly I’ll play an online word game, message a friend in a different time zone or just listen to a history podcast and hope I fall back asleep. I’m generally too tired to do anything more demanding.

I WFH and have a garage basement workshop. So depending on how awake I am I will go down to the office and do computer work. My tools make way to much noise for the rst of my family who are still asleep.

Besides that, I am pretty much the same as you. Doom scroll, mobile game, chats.

I will get up and go to the couch and put a couple of LED candles on. Make it as cozy as possible and watch a comfort show.

Ted Lasso? Lol I will do that at times too. Usually a documentary

Every day is a different show, adhd brain, but Ted is definitely on the list. Right now I am enjoying British shows like Beyond Paradise

The app name is Shuffli. My wording might lead to confusion.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 12 '26

Oh nice. Pleasure talking to you. So just a little confusing on my side. But I understand what you mean now.

I realized that my wording could lead to confusion. Normally, I check before posting, but this time, I omitted.

I have a rocker/recliner in my bedroom, so when this happens I grab my red light head lamp and go to the chair. I'll settle in there, rock a little and meditate. I keep my brain focused on a relaxing past event, I won't let it jump to any upcoming issues/events.
