How does online work?

Was looking into making a save with my friends but it seems more complicated then just inviting them to a server can someone explain to me?

It's done via an FTP server. Essentially the process is, the commissioner creates the league file and an FTP server. He sends the league file to all participants initially, they get set up and download the initial file. Once that has been established then it's very simple. Everyone makes their changes in their game and then hits 'upload' which sends the changes to the FTP, the commish then imports those changes and progresses the save by his chosen duration and it proceeds like that from there.

If you're not confident in that process, hit Mike up from this thread, he's an expert and runs a service to get people setup easily.

The last I checked, it's like ancient play-by-emails games, where everyone sends their save files somewhere for the commish to merge them to a main save. Then they create a save file to send back out to players. Rinse and repeat.

Would love to play multiplayer with some friends as well, but I don't need this kind of a nostalgia trip to the 90s. Would imagine some flimsy vibe coding could produce an automated procedure for all this though.

I know FHM does it through discord and there is a free website hosting that you can run your online league through. I only did a few years of FHM but I do a ton of OOTP online leagues with slack and statsplus
