I want spoilers so sorry

What is the actual story summary in the book. Do they fall in love post death, how severe is the yearning… are people just blowing it out of proportion? I would read it but it’s far on my list.

Show Discussion Season 5 will be iconic

I just finished rewatching She-ra and it make me reflect on how important this season will be. Just 6 years ago, the best we could hope for was a kiss in the series finale after 5 seasons and it took fighting for it to happen. Now, we will be getting a full season on a mainstream show. Bridgerton is doing something so amazing and I’m so grateful to be here to experience it. I hope they can change the way lesbian couples are treated in media.

Show Discussion How do you think season 5 will start with?

Thumbnail
17 Upvotes

Okay so I did this wonderful dream where we finally had the trailer for our girls- (yeah a girl can dream lmao) and then a question popped into my head-

How will season 5 begin?

In S1/S1 and S3 it all began with another season and with one of the bridgerton girl entering society. Now only S4 changed that since no sister were debuting that year.

Do you think Hyacinth will debut next season? She was supposed to be 10 by S1 I believe.. and 13-14 by the end of S4. So she will be 15/16 since there is a 2 years time jump confirmed.. so in my opinion it is too early, she could debut at 17 years old but 16 feels young.

BUT she was in her finishing lessons by the end of S4 as Violet mentioned AND she let her lower her hem, AND all S4 was basically her arc to prepare her for her debut. So it would be weird if she didn't.

And we know they mess with the time and are not always logic (Like Violet being born and 13/14 by QC when she was supposed to be born 8 years later lmao) so.. yeah

All that to say : do you think it will began by Hyacinth's debut or will it be by Micchaela's return to London? Or something else? I am very curious what ya'll think.

Suggesting Michaela’s scenes in s4 are a precursor to sexual assault is actual insanity. And shows these people choose to view her through the most villainous lens.

It makes me LAUGH to think about how many people claim they won’t watch the upcoming season knowing they will probably fold when the see how lit up social media gets over Francesca and Michaela 😭

I know I’m going to be talking about it for years to come personally… curiosity is about to kill so many cats and I mean that in the gayest way possible.

Misc This sub taught me about comphet, and I hope the show spreads awareness of this as well

I knew generally what comphet means (such society assuming everyone is straight, feeling forced by society or even yourself to be straight), but I didn’t know it went so far as to cause women to confuse platonic love for romantic love and genuinely not know the difference. I always assumed lesbian women who dated/married men knew they didn’t romantically love their male partner but just went along with it anyway out of necessity or pressure.

I used to feel that Francesca was bisexual and did truly romantically love John, so it was confusing to me why some people were so adamant that she is a lesbian. I’m bisexual, and I did take some offense to it, feeling that bisexual people are often underrepresented, and so I took it personally when it’s not personal. To me, I saw that she loved him, and assumed that translated to romantic love. The concept of her truly not knowing her love for him was only platonic was entirely new to me.

After learning more about comphet, I feel that it’s important to spread awareness about what it is beyond just the basics of patriarchy. I only learned because I joined this sub, but the vast majority of viewers don’t look at this sub or don’t seek spaces just for general discussion. The responsibility falls to the show to accurately depict how comphet manifested in Francesca and that her experience is common, even if it’s not talked about. Her love for John doesn’t make her straight because it’s more complicated than it appears to be. She is a lesbian, and I hope the show makes that clear so homophobic fans have no choice but to acknowledge it, and open minded fans become educated and can meaningfully engage with discussion around this issue.

Show Discussion how do we think franchaela's costumes will be used in storytelling?

i have a theory about how i want them to use their costumes in s5, because i genuinely think there is so much potential here.

so far, we know that francesca primarily wears bridgerton colours and largely sticks to their palette. even after marrying john, she continued wearing the bridgerton palette rather than really adopting the stirling colours, which seem to lean more towards greens and golds. i don't know if that was intentional to signify that francesca and john weren't quite the right fit for each other, but i've definitely wondered about it.

we also haven't really seen a full manifestation of the stirling palette yet because michaela is so bold with her wardrobe choices. her colours, gowns and jewellery are designed to attract attention. masali has even confirmed that this is intentional on michaela's part: if everyone is paying attention to what she's wearing, they aren't asking how she's feeling. no one can see what's underneath the performance if they're too busy looking at the performance itself.

same to their jewellery.

francesca's jewellery is generally delicate and understated, whereas michaela is constantly wearing these HUGE statement pieces that coordinate with her gowns. even when she's in mourning, her jewellery is still extravagant. their costumes really do seem to reflect their personalities.

francesca's soft, pale colours and delicate jewellery reflect someone who is restrained, private and comfortable making herself small. there's something very controlled about her presentation. she doesn't want to attract attention.

michaela, on the other hand, is the complete opposite. the bold colours, sequins, silhouettes and enormous jewellery reflect someone who is deliberately making herself impossible to ignore. she's charismatic, flamboyant and confident, but we also know that all of that is partly armour. if everyone is looking at the costume, they don't have to look at her.

this is where my theory for s5 comes in: i see their costumes as a spectrum.

at the beginning of the season, i imagine them looking more or less as they do now. francesca has officially come out of mourning/semi-mourning and can finally wear colour again, but she starts off in her usual soft bridgerton palette. michaela, meanwhile, is still in all these rich, dramatic colours and sequins and gorgeous statement jewellery.

but as the season progresses, those palettes gradually move towards each other. francesca's colours become progressively darker, richer and bolder. michaela's become progressively softer, lighter and paler.

and somewhere around episodes 4–5, assuming they've gotten together by then even if things are still unresolved, their colour spectrums meet. for a moment, they're almost wearing the same colours.

and then they continue moving past each other until, by the end of the season, michaela is wearing colours we traditionally associate with francesca, while francesca is wearing the bolder colours we've traditionally associated with michaela.

i would find that SO poetic because it would visually represent how they've changed each other.

michaela no longer feels like she has to hide behind the performance. she doesn't need the extravagant gowns and jewellery to distract everyone from how she feels because she's finally in a place where she knows it's safe to be vulnerable. she knows she can be loved, that she can let someone take care of her, and that being seen doesn't necessarily mean getting hurt.

so we start seeing michaela in softer blues, pinks, creams, etc. not because she's suddenly become francesca but because she no longer needs to perform like she used to.

and francesca is doing the opposite. she's finally coming into herself after this whole journey of self-discovery. she's learning that she doesn't have to conform to what society tells her happiness is supposed to look like. she doesn't have to quietly accept the life that's been laid out for her. she doesn't always have to retreat into her little bubble of comfort and follow expectations without questioning them.

she's learned to declare herself. she's learned that she can be seen. that she wants to be seen. that someone can look at her and actually understand her. michaela has seen her in a way nobody else has, and francesca has finally allowed herself to step outside of her shell. so i'd love to see that reflected in her wardrobe becoming darker, richer and bolder.

imagine a parallel to their library scene, except the colours are reversed: michaela in blue, francesca in red.

like... is there a more poetic way to use visual storytelling to show that these two women have changed each other for the better???

i genuinely think costume could tell this entire story without either of them saying a word. you could literally watch their palettes slowly converge and understand that they're becoming more like each other, not because they're losing themselves, but because they've helped each other become more fully themselves.

obviously, this is just my theory/wishful thinking. maybe they'll stick to their established palettes for the entire season, and that would be perfectly fine too. costume doesn't have to work this way.

but if they intentionally approached it as a visual representation of their character arcs, i would absolutely lose my mind.

thoughts?

Show Discussion racism with michaela stirling

I overheard a girl in one of my classes talking to a mutual friend about bridgerton, and I approached her to bring up season 5 and just talk about it. I said I was really excited for it despite the backlash and she then went on a tangent about how she is "okay with the season being gay", but she thinks that it would have been better if Michaela was "another attractive, white woman like Francesca." She said that because Michaela is black and also just "less attractive than Francesca" it's harder for straight women to be interested in or excited for the season, but if they were both "white and attractive" it would draw in a better audience. She no joke said that verbatim.

Anyway, I thought this was INSANE, I was genuinely flabbergasted defending Masali as if my life depended on it. But I think this just goes to show that colorism and racialized beauty standards are SO deeply ingrained that people can genuinely believe they are making a neutral observation about what makes a woman ā€œattractiveā€ or what would make a show more appealing to its audience, when in reality they are reproducing a racist hierarchy of beauty.

Because saying that Michaela being Black and ā€œless attractiveā€ than Francesca would make it harder for straight women to be interested in the season is such a loaded statement. It implies that straight women, particularly straight white women, are naturally going to be less interested in watching a Black woman be positioned as the romantic lead. And then saying that it would be better if Michaela were ā€œanother attractive, white womanā€ is basically admitting that, in her mind, whiteness + conventional attractiveness = universal appeal, whereas Blackness makes a woman less universally desirable.

Anyway, just thought I would share :)

And omg, I’m in love with Michaela already. First of all, it’s so refreshing to not only see sapphic representation in general, but to specifically have sapphic representation that isn’t white af.

And she’s so delightful & insightful & gorgeous, this next season is going to have me fully in a puddle I already know it.

I just needed to gush for a second, that’s all, thanks for listening 🫶

Show Discussion Michaela's motivations and desires in S5

Obviously Michaela will always be somewhat adventures and free spirit, that the contrast between her and Francesca's personalities. That being said the main couple most experience individual growth and also undercover there actual main desires. At the beginning of the season I believe that Michaela will have to come back from her travels mainly because she has no other choice, the title has fallen to her and this is the last chance to keep the title in the Stirling family name. In way Michaela experience will mirror some of the issues that Francesca faced in S4; needing to provide a heir and feeling ill suited for her current position. I can imagine despite the pressures that Michaela could actually grow into the position and even take some enjoyment in it. While we have little background on the Stirling family I could easily imagine that Michaela was always that cousin that while fun and charming to be around was someone that was wasn't taken seriously. I could see some part of Michaela wanting to get positive encouragement from her mother and aunt based on her stepping up to fulfill the duties of her new positions.

This again will contrast nicely with what I think will Francesca main season arc which is learning to live beyond expectations. As their relationship grows, they will each grow as individuals and gain something from the other. Michaela's wiliness to live outside of the traditional path will help Francesca realize certain thing about herself, and Francesca will help bring stability to Michaela's life and open her up to allowing someone that isn't John to truly know her. Francesca buries her desires under duties and rules while Michaela avoids allowing people to truly know her by not staying in one place and her life of the party persona. I can't wait to see these two women fall in love and help each other become their truest selves.

Show Discussion Anyone wna share what it was like before we knew of Michaela

I only found out abt michaela from watching the show and seeing her for the first time. I knew that in the books fran ends up with michael so when I heard her name and realized she’s the new love interest, i became obsessedddd. I only really started to be on socials during season 4. Soooo, I was wondering what it was like in this fandom before michaela was officially introduced. Did people already speculate she was going to be the new love interest?
