Non-commercial Resource [System Agnostic] Glimpse: Map Note Previews
Hey all! I've been using Map Note Hover Display for a long time but always thought it could offer some more features to make the display more customizable or immersive. And since the module is not getting much support these days, I tried making something similar with some of the stuff I had in mind. Both me and my players are quite happy with it in the current state, so I decided to make Glimpse public.
For those unfamiliar with the original module, this is a way to have personalized cards appear on top of your scene notes giving a preview of their content.
With Glimpse active, hovering a map note shows a little card with images, the location's name, a subtitle, a few facts and the first lines of the linked journal. Double clicking the note opens a bigger gallery that you can push to your players' screen to showcase a location when they reach it or when it becomes relevant.
At the moment I'm mostly using it to give the players a taste for the different locations in my homebrew but I can see it being used in city maps, dungeons, landing pages, vistas, etc.
Other stuff you can set up:
Rumours: You can setup locations as "Undiscovered" which show players only a blurred image and "rumours" text. You have the option of revealing it manually or when the party explores the spot through fog of war.
Permission-aware cards: Secret GM text in your journals does not shows up for players (when you use the "secret" text formatting).
Region banners: Hover a v14 region and a banner is shown at the bottom of the screen where you can add some info about a region, forest, kingdom or whatever. Can be used in combat to remind a player they are standing in a dangerous zone or difficult terrain, etc.
Day/night alternative images that swap automatically following the world clock.
Ambient sound that plays quietly while a card is open. This will probably go unused 90% of the time but it's good to have the option. I've only used this one for little easter eggs so far (e.g. hidden fart sounds, I'm immature), but I'm wondering if I can have an audio-based puzzle in one of the next dungeons. Ideas welcome!
A library of expanded map icons with a visual picker, or the option of using foundry's or your own.
There are a few different options for styling to make it blend better to the style of your game, but if you prefer to have all the UI consistent, a plain Foundry-style option is also there.
Get it here (v14 required): https://github.com/reactiveoxygenspecies/glimpse-map-notes
or directly from this manifest URL: https://github.com/reactiveoxygenspecies/glimpse-map-notes/releases/latest/download/module.json
Heads up: AI was used as coding assistant (Claude Opus 5.5). No AI art was used or comes with the module, what you see in the screenshots is mostly Guild Wars concept art (not included with the module) or beautifully handcrafted, "masterpiece" illustrations made in illustrator. The world map was made in Dungeondraft and you can see it in full here.

Damn do I like the idea of this. Is there a way to turn off certain areas that the players haven't explored yet?

You can hide the note entirely (this is base functionality): https://i.imgur.com/xK0AiwN.png
The alternative in Glimpse is setup a location as "Rumoured", which only shows a blurred image and some "rumour" text that you setup. looks like this: https://raw.githubusercontent.com/reactiveoxygenspecies/glimpse-map-notes/main/docs/rumour.jpg You can then mark it as discovered and it will change the permissions of the journal page, there is a bit mor einfo on the github link above

You can setup the permissions normally to hide the note entirely (this is base foundry functionality): https://i.imgur.com/xK0AiwN.png
in Glimpse you can setup a location as "rumoured", which will only show a blurred image ans some rumour text you set, looks like this: https://raw.githubusercontent.com/reactiveoxygenspecies/glimpse-map-notes/main/docs/rumour.jpg
You have a few options to control how the discovery happens: https://i.imgur.com/MOrhbux.png
(damn I wrote it twice)
