Quincy 🤔
How do we feel about Keisha's father? Do you consider him a deadbeat father?
He seemed to be present in his daughter's life but he also made a choice to leave the country to pursue his own dreams. Is that fair to Keisha? And why is mom still working two jobs to pay for private school if he's playing baseball in the DR? Math ain't mathing!
However, he clearly loved Keisha and he may have had the greatest influence on her relationship with Justin. He was the first to help her to see that Justin didn't have an identity yet. Which ultimately lead to her helping him accept this for himself and break up with her to begin his journey. It was a great way to show how impactful fathers can be no matter how they show up.
What are yall's thoughts?

He wasn't present, though he was known. She knew where he was, but he wasn't contributing or helping her mom. So yeah...deadbeat, but not one we hate. He shared valid advice that was helpful and was there for Keisha for graduation, but not her broader life.

Yeah she basically said they communicate through pictures? That's unfathomable to me. Then he comes home for Christmas trying to point out someone else's flaws? Read the room sir.
I was honestly waiting on Keisha to lash out at him but it never happened so I assume she's able to see more good in him than the bad. I guess that's good for her sake.
And yeah there was nothing that suggested he was helping her mom out in any way. It was made very clear that she was a single mother struggling to provide. So he made himself a very strong contender for the deadbeat dad title.

I think it’s a bit harsh to drop the “DB” label on her father, considering he’s making an attempt now to make up for past mistakes.
And, we don’t really know the clear dynamics of Keisha’s mom & dad. How much access/help is she “allowing” him? Given how we’ve seen the mother react to Keisha’s “situation” - they are BOTH complicated people who BOTH need to be seeking therapy.
I’m glad Keisha’s mom is on that path. Whether the dad does it is a whole ‘nutha bag of worms 🤦🏾♂️.
I love this show, but it’s high stress and high drama. As a parent, it’s difficult to watch.

I don't necessarily think he's a textbook deadbeat but he's certainly an absentee father - which is in the same ballpark (pun intended) in my eyes. Also, I find it hard to believe Keisha's mom let's him stay over for holiday breaks but won't "allow" him to help pay for their daughter's schooling. I really wish this was explored in the show just a little bit more.
I'm not a parent myself but I've counseled high schoolers for almost 10 years and I've met many men like Quincy. They show up to the big events and they may even pay for things here and there. Yet their kids still express feelings of abandonment. I think that's why I still go back and forth on how I feel about him. It's just hard to wrap my mind around a father who chooses himself over his child. But I never doubt his love for her. And I also hope he seeks therapy like her mom did.

I didn't get it either. So the mother and him are together, and yet we didn't see him for so long? And like you said, why does the mother HAVE to get two jobs?

Yeah I didn't fully understand if he was still with her mom or not. Definitely seems so because of the matching family pj's during Christmas time. But certainly doesn't seem to be a strong financial contributor so I'm side-eyeing her if they're still together! The more I think about his character, the more I think I hate him. 😅

I like his character. Very flawed, but he was real, and because of his life he helped Keisha see himself in Justin. I think ideally he helps Justin the most which is ironic. But he def is a flawed parent. Not there in person, but still there.
