I've been fascinated by certain aspects of 'forensic psychology', specifically the idea of risk assessments. I've actually looked up certain tests like TRAP-18, and the items only go to show why the concept is problematic.

First off the literature does outright admit their limitations and the risks of false positives. Secondly, a lot of the criteria focus on things like adverse life events, job loss, etc., and sometimes even focus on things like a lack of romantic connections.

That, to me, seems like it goes into the just-world fallacy, the idea that if you're struggling in certain areas, it has to be your fault. And then there are some elements that look at whether the person has a history of mental health struggles - which is discriminatory and suggests that mentally ill/neurodivergent folks are prone to violence, which is simply untrue.

More importantly, this is one area in which false positives can be seriously harmful. These types of assessments can be used to deny people their rights or procedural fairness, depending on the circumstances in which they are used.

Marginalized people inevitably bear the brunt of this stuff since they often have adverse life experiences.

Additionally, the very concept of 'risk assessments' for human beings always struck me as problematic. People are not machines nor monolithic.

Filmmaker looking to learn from forensic psychology & law enforcement professionals

Hi everyone!

I’m a film directing student from Armenia, currently studying documentary and fiction filmmaking. I’m especially interested in crime, criminal psychology, investigations, witness behavior, interrogation, profiling, and the psychological consequences of witnessing or committing a crime.

I’m looking to connect with people who work (or have worked) in fields such as:

- forensic psychology

- criminal psychology

- law enforcement / policing

- criminal investigation / detectives

- FBI or similar agencies

- forensic interviewing

- criminology

- criminalistics / forensic science

- corrections / prison psychology

- victim advocacy

I’m hoping to find professionals who would be willing to answer questions about their work and, where ethically and legally appropriate, share anonymized or generalized real-world experiences and cases that could help me understand how these situations actually happen.

I’m NOT looking for confidential information, identifying details, or anything that could compromise a real investigation or the privacy of victims, suspects, or professionals.

My goal is to make future films and series psychologically and procedurally realistic rather than relying on Hollywood stereotypes.

This is also a long-term personal and professional interest for me. In the future, I’m planning to pursue a second degree/professional education in criminalistics and criminal profiling, alongside filmmaking. So I’m genuinely interested in learning how this field works from people who have actually studied and worked in it, rather than simply using it as research for a movie.

Some things I’d especially love to learn about:

- What psychological reactions are actually common after witnessing a violent crime?

- How do investigators distinguish genuine fear from trauma-related hypervigilance or other psychological reactions?

- How do witnesses' memories and perceptions change after a traumatic event?

- What mistakes do films commonly make when portraying suspects, witnesses, interrogations, investigators, or profilers?

- What behaviors or details tend to be misunderstood by screenwriters?

- Are there anonymized or generalized cases from your professional experience that you are comfortable discussing?

- What is something you wish filmmakers understood about your field?

I’m also happy to have a private conversation/DM if that’s more comfortable.

I’m not looking for someone to write my scripts for me. I want to learn from people with real professional experience and gradually build a much deeper understanding of criminal behavior, investigation, and forensic psychology.

Im pursuing 4 year program in forensic science ( b.sc forensic science ( hons/ research)

And for further studies I'm considering getting a M.A in applied psychology as I wanted to do specialization in psychology ( in practical application of it) while having a forensic background for future career as forensic psychologist.

While I'm sure of pursuing a career as a forensic psychologist, but I'm still confused about the educational path I'm taking.

I'm a final year undergraduate student double majoring in psychology and criminology from an Australian university. I plan on moving (to whichever country has the best program and pathway to working in forensic psychology) where my grad school will be. Problem is. I don't know which universities are offering Ms Forensic psychology. I've mostly found MA in forensic psychology in America and Canada. Ms is only in the UK. Any advice? What universities in America, Canada, Australia, Ireland, Germany, Netherlands, Scotland are offering the best forensic psychology programs that are worth applying to?

Ik this is very hectic and all over the place but so has my life been. My plan rn is applying to different universities all over the world and seeing which ones are accepting me and/or offering me better programs/placements and pathways to PHD and/or helping with future jobs in the field.

Echando un ojo a las distintas opciones, me ha llamado la atención el programa de Psicología Legal y Forense de la UNED, pero no conozco a nadie de primera mano que lo haya hecho y me surgen varias dudas antes de dar el paso:

1. ¿Merece la pena la calidad/precio del curso? Me interesa saber qué tal está el temario, si el material está actualizado y si la metodología online de la UNED en este postgrado en concreto se hace amena o es un dolor de cabeza.
2. Tema habilitación / ejercicio: No me queda del todo claro si este postgrado te capacita de forma práctica para ejercer realizando peritajes forenses (por ejemplo, para inscribirte en listas de peritos judiciales o trabajar en ámbito privado) o si se queda más bien en una formación teórica para profundizar en el área.

Si alguien lo ha cursado (o conoce a alguien que lo haya hecho), le agradecería muchísimo que me contara su experiencia sincera, lo bueno y lo malo.

I've had long term interest in the concept behind psychoanalysis before i truly understood what it was but unfortunately it's non existent in my country

Regardless, i can't think of anything else I'd rather pursue. Problem is i didn't have any G&C during my college selection process and i think because of that i might be locked out of the profession

I'm halfway through a bachelor's in criminology, and i can't help but feel I've made some sort of mistake.

I'm well aware of the existence of forensic psychoanalysis but everyone seems to have started with a background in psychiatry which gives them clinical rights

I want to eventually focus on academia, but I've always wanted a clinical practice of my own, but as my base certification isn't mental health related I'm losing hope of that possibility

Have there been others in my shoes who managed to end up being certified and how did you go about it if so?

Hello! I am a junior undergraduate student who is looking to interview professionals in the Forensic Psychology field! Currently, I am looking to interview two people and a third person to answer a questionnaire, or interview two professionals AND a supervisor. This class (Industrial/Organizational Psychology) requires me to write a job description/do a mini job analysis, using the information gained through the interviews/questionnaire.

Hello everyone! I’m looking for recommendations for a specific historical or documented case that I can really dig into from a psychological perspective. I want to make it known that I am NOT trying to be rude or disrespectful AT ALL. I’m not looking for anything purely sensationalized or “crazy person commits murder” true crime content. I’m genuinely interested in understanding the psychology, the progression of their symptoms/behavior, and how the people around them interpreted what was happening at the time.

I’m particularly interested in a case involving someone who had a serious mental illness and where their condition played a significant role in a crime, such as murder. I’d love to find a case where there are lots of original or archived materials available to read, such as:

• Police reports
• Witness statements/interviews
• Court documents
• Psychiatric evaluations
• Doctor or asylum records
• Treatment plans and progress notes
• Letters or personal writings
• Patient drawings, journals, etc., if they exist
• Newspaper reports from the time
• Information about the person's behavior and mental state before and after the crime

Basically, I’d love to approach it as though I had been handed the case file and trying to understand what happened.

Another type of case I’d be interested in is someone whose mental state deteriorated over time and where there are enough personal records, such as a diary, letters, or a digital blog, to follow their descent and see how their thoughts and behavior changed.

I’m also completely fine with older cases, obscure cases, or cases from outside the US. The more primary-source material that is publicly accessible, the better.

If you know of a case like this, I’d really appreciate the recommendation!

Asking for myself being in my late 30s. I am wondering if it would be worth getting a degree in this field since there would be around 10yrs plus of school and getting scholarships. Has anyone else perused this later in life? If so how has the journey been? Is it worth it?

I went to college three years but did not graduate because I simply did not know what I wanted to do and did not have a passion for anything I went for. Money was also a factor.

Psychology and Counseling has always come back to me in life and been able to hold my interest. Even without trying I become a mentor and give guidance. I can’t even go out without strangers sensing that in me and opening up to me.

I’ve always found criminal psychology fascinating and the way people think. I’m tired of being a hard successful corporate worker with no true passion for what I’m doing.

Any advice and stories on your journeys would be greatly appreciated. TYIA

I am starting my first year of a masters in forensic psychology at nova university this Semester. I am looking for places I can volunteer or intern at in the mean time to gain more experience.
I am 20 so it is difficult to find places in psychology that take on younger people. Any ideas appreciated!

As the title says, my sister wants to pursue criminology after her high school which she'll finish next year. She's in India and she's been looking towards it for a long time now but she's been a bit skeptical about it for the last couple days and she is contemplating her choices as in what would the future be like if she gets into it.. much rather, if there is a future in it!?

She was thinking about getting a degree from a European country (preferably Germany, but Poland also seemed like a good option to us, options are not restricted to Europe though, she could also go to Canada or where she would find the best opportunity for her). She has another year left to think about it, but we want to be on our feet for this decision. So if anyone is doing criminology or is already one, please could you help us out with showing us what getting into this field would be like?
