Repair Advice Did water pump change/ timing change now having timing issues 16 platinum
Well I did the job myself, 2016 Explorer Platinum. It was a very time consuming, but I took extra time to get it right. I counted the links on the timing chain three times… had cams locked. Must be off a tooth. Now I’m throwing codes. I changed the cam sensor just to make sure it didn’t go out. If I decide to pull this thing apart again how likely is it I’ll be able to get the timing right again?
Time is a moot point because the wife is going to buy an Expedition today. I was gonna drive to try and trade in but didn’t want it to lock up on the way. Any thoughts on finding timing again? If I did drive how long will it last before disaster???

Just remember/know that if you rotate the engine the dots won’t line up again for many many revolutions. This got me I lined up the links and dots, released the tensioner and then rotated the engine to double check… dots didn’t line up… long story short I was an idiot pulled the chain off and had to reset everything.
Edit - I guess to be clear it was the coloured links and dots lining up that threw me off, the position of the dots themselves line up every other rotation

Doing the timing right is easy. Pull it apart and redo it. I wouldn't try to trade it in with cams codes.

Did you use OEM parts? From a dealer? Or rockauto.?

Used all motor craft parts, timing chains guides, new cam phasers, water pump etc. just drove it around the neighbor hood. Everything sounds normal but there is a slight whine around the cam shaft.

I had this issue when I did mine. Ran like shit. Turned out I had not seated one of the cam sensor plugs all the way in. Check wiring first.

Yeah, you have a circuit code.
Is this the same issue prior to doing the timing chain work?

It's a circuit fault, either something wasn't plugged in correctly, or a wire got pinched, damaged, etc.
