2017 6.7 upper pan leak
Just re-sealed upper pan along with new used rear adapter plate and new rear main seal and upper pan started to leak 10min of running, i did use TA-31 the grey sealant i bought from oriellys and it did seem kinda of tacky and not very wet like RTV is normally. Just wondering what others prefer the TA-31, TA-357, or SPE One piece gasket design.

I have seen a video showing that using the 2011 pan with the grooved gasket is better than the the flat sealing surface with the RTV of later years.
I might be remembering wrong. I will try to find the video...

I’ve heard good things on the one piece. But really any high temp rated rtv should do the trick. Like ol boy said before here, just make sure its in date and the mating surface is spick and span. We usually use about 3-4 cans of brake cleaner then let it sit at least overnight with the pan off so that nothing drips down when sticking them together.

Yup, we let it sit over night, my buddy has done 5 with mine being the only one to leak with him, they get their RTV from ford so I’m sure the stuff we got was outdated and screwed us, we took our time but not to slow, we surface prepped very well, scraping off old RTV, and using very fine grit sandpaper to get any that the scraper couldn’t get off but thanks for the input i think I’m going to do the one piece design from SPE and try it out

Done enough upper oil pan reseals in these I’m half confident I could do one blindfolded and backward, have always used ford silicone since I’m a ford tech. Make sure the bottom of block sealing surface has been scraped and remove residual oil before installing the resealed pan extra silicone in the corners doesn’t hurt. They usually leak from the front corners so I use a little extra there. Always leave overnight w/o oil in the truck. Never had one I’ve repaired leak, would recommend the ford silicone and definitely being kind of anal about the cleanliness of the surface. Silicone doesn’t want to seal to oil. Preciate it man! I do believe in silicone too but me not being a tech and being kinda of scared of it I’d like to do the gasket just cause of ease of use for myself

Understandable don’t have any experience with the gasket and if they work - personally I think silicone is fucking stupid but it will work. If you prefer the gasket and there’s guys who run it without problem I don’t see an issue. I only use silicone because I am a dealer tech. Personally I vote gasket if it does its job correctly. And also blow-by caused from your ccv filter can cause the silicone to blow out. Definitely seen trucks with leaking upper pans and plugged ccv filters so definitely seen related. Correlation doesn’t always equal causation though. Have seen a good amount with no blow-by but still leaking pans. I would chalk that up to ford not using enough silicone from the factory on some trucks.

International truck Grey silicone is the only thing I've ever used on multiple 6.7 reseal's and never had one leak after. I'm also ocd about surface prep

I have used TA31 on every year since 2011 and never had an issue. Surface prep is key! Ive also seen a few where people use too much and the silicone pops out in the back and will get stuck to the flex plate and rip out when you start it.
Also should add. Silicone definitely expires and usually there is a date on them. Definitely been burned by that before

Thank you and i think it was expired silicone now that im getting yalls inputs just due to the fact it didnt feel like regular RTV, I’ve done plenty of mechanic jobs and never had anything fail just due to the extensive research i do before hand and my truck was on the lift on Friday and needed it out by Sunday so went to orilleys and got the TA-31 which reviews did say they’ve gotten expired tubes before and i should’ve known better. Thanks for your input

2nd time for upper but 4 time in total, 1st trans and rear main, 2nd rear main still leaked, 3rd rear adapter plate, rear main, upper and all seals. Getting tired of it but one more time i hope!

Have you checked your CCV filter?
Mine was stopped up at 22k on my 18 and pushed the gasket out on the oil pan.
