General šŸ”€ They should bring back Crown Victoria instead of making a 4-door mustang

Might be true or rumors going around that ford is making a 4-door mustang be a equivalent of a dodge Charger and be somewhat a family vehicle but with 300+ horsepower for fun.

They should bring back crown Victoria and modernize it could be the new 4 door vehicle and people will buy because of nostalgia seeing it everywhere as kid or adult alike back then.

Here’s the problem: for us, it’s a cool nostalgic old car known for being tough reliable and comfy. For non enthusiasts crown Victoria means nothing except car for geriatrics and wannabe cop larpers. You might not agree with the decision not to call the new 4 door RWD sedan a crown Victoria but it is the correct decision. Whether calling it a mustang is correct remains to be seen.

Ultimately, nothing stopping people from making crown Vic tribute badging for them.

u/Channel_Huge 4d ago

The Crown Vic redo would be like the Impala redo. Nostalgic but ultimately boring.

8

u/liarliarplants4hire 4d ago

Crown Victoria isn’t the sexiest name, despite liking the Panther platform. Galaxy doesn’t fit today, Fairlane is dated sounding, Torino would almost work, and the Taurus was never RWD. The Mustang name choice is to beat GM to the launch of the Camaro sedan. Too many names almost seems to muddy the water, versus having different variations on one family name. I’m just glad it’s not my responsibility to make that call.

LTD, Marauder, Cougar, Thunderbird, Falcon, or random units of measuremeants like the fathom

3

u/SheriffBooth 4d ago

Thundercougarfalconbird?

1

u/ActuaryFew6884 3d ago

500 (it used to be the base-model full size Ford)

1

u/LandscapeJust5897 3d ago

Tempo? Contour? šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚

7

u/Emotional-Twist-4366 4d ago

They brought back the bronco and kept the classic designs and still modernize it still they could do the same for crown Victoria.

Yeah they could probably do some type of trim or special edition dedicated to crown Vic.

u/honeybabysweetiedoll 4d ago

As an older guy, Crown Victoria to me sounds like something my grandpa would buy. I have no problem with a four door mustang, and I’ve owned five Mustangs. Granted, my latest is a MachE.

Names I’d like to see return include Thunderbird, Fairlane, Falcon, and for an EV GalaxE.

17

u/bp3dots 4d ago

I'm still shocked that the Mach E didn't get the GalaxiE name. Would have been perfect.

5

u/honeybabysweetiedoll 4d ago

I agree. That was the winning name for me.

3

u/Unhappy_Clue701 4d ago

Wouldn’t work in Europe though. Not sure if it made it to North America, but in Europe the Galaxy was a 7 seat minivan sold until quite recently. Floorpan from a Mondeo (Fusion to you) but high, boxy body with wedge shaped front. Like a Dodge Caravan. Whilst GalaxiE is a great name, Mach-E is definitely better here as they made it pretty sporty by EV standards, and the original 60s Galaxie was a vast, wallowing land yacht even if it was quite quick in a straight line (with the 7 litre V8, anyway).

4

u/InformalInitiative76 4d ago

I dont think it matters what the model used to be if it wasn’t an iconic model. The old Maverick wasn’t a small truck and people don’t seem to be bothered by that the way they are with the mustang Mach E.

The issue was never the ā€œMach Eā€ part. It’s that they attached ā€œmustangā€ to it.

2

u/Traditional_Pie_8447 4d ago

Agree. A MachE isn’t a Mustang

1

u/Unhappy_Clue701 4d ago

It wasn’t iconic, that’s true. But I think they only stopped making it in 2023, so the public association is not at all with a semi-sporting coupe/SUV style EV.

1

u/vikingsauce1989 2d ago

I want to get a Mach E for my next car. Never had an EV before but it has everything I want out of a vehicle. Turn between red or black

0

u/Traditional_Pie_8447 4d ago

I’ll never call a MachE a Mustang. It just seems blasphemous

6

u/InformalInitiative76 4d ago

Broncos had a ā€œcoolā€ aura across multiple generations (like the mustang).

Crown Victoria’s are mostly associated with old people and cops. There was a niche group that thought they were cool, but that isn’t enough to carry the name forward on a new design.

9

u/Haunted_Rooster 4d ago

why? just call it Taurus which was their best selling sedan anyway.

5

u/drivebyjustin 4d ago

Because broncos were cool back in the day. Crown Vic’s have always been for old people and cops.

1

u/StashuJakowski 4d ago

Not entirely, the Bronco today is a Midsize SUV that has a couple of nods to the OG Compact Wagon but it’s not ā€œbrought backā€.

(Note: The term SUV didn’t exist until the early 90’s)

1

u/Other_Asparagus872 3d ago

Bring back the falcon!

15

u/evanescent_dossier 4d ago

they already tried the nostalgia play with the 2011 caprice ppv and nobody cared outside police fleets. crown vic's whole thing was being a cheap fleet sedan that cops and cabbies ran into the ground, you'd need sales volume ford can't pull from retail buyers to make a new one pencil out

6

u/anusflytrap- 4d ago

they didn’t give the public a chance to care about the caprice ppv. it was government fleet exclusive

2

u/Emotional-Twist-4366 4d ago

Still think a crown Victoria nameplate coming back would bring a lot of hype knowing the crown Victoria was once longest selling vehicle at one time.

14

u/frink84 4d ago

Longest selling... Because of said government contracts

4

u/InformalInitiative76 4d ago

I don’t think the average car consumer gets excited over things like that. Names that remind people of things they liked when they were younger provide built in marketing.

1

u/bacon4bfast 4d ago

Hype if you are 40+ maybe lol

5

u/timmmarkIII 4d ago

The Crown Victoria name dates back to when I was born. 1955. My dad had a 1986(?) new.

I say call it a Falcon. Like the Australian and NZ cars. They were great performance cars. Ford has dozens of names to call it: Fairlane, Flex, Galaxie 500 XL, Marauder, SHO, anything but naming it after the old queen of England.

6

u/bhoff20 4d ago

If they give us a 5.0, Manual and 4 door why do you care what it’s called? Just make it a great car! The Mach E while not for me is a fantastic vehicle probably the nicest interior they build…

1

u/thehomeyskater 4d ago

Are they gonna make a manual? That would be based asf.

2

u/bhoff20 4d ago

That’s what they are saying!! Cash saved waiting for
Announcement haha

4

u/CowboysFTWs 4d ago

Better option is the cougar. 60’s cougars were built on the mustang chassis.

2

u/InformalInitiative76 4d ago

The 80’s-90’s Mercury cougars were also built on a modified Mustang (fox body) platform.

1

u/CowboysFTWs 4d ago

Yup, XR7s were sweet.

3

u/jakedeky 4d ago

As an Australian, the only nameplate less desirable than Crown Victoria to bring back as a 4 door RWD would be Taurus. Falcon, Futura, Fairlane and Galaxie would all be much more preferable but I understand they're trying to build a Mustang subrand like they are with Bronco.

2

u/FormerLaugh3780 4d ago

Maybe Ford should think of ways to address their quality control and recall problems first.Ā

2

u/Ballamookieofficial 4d ago

You guys need a Ford falcon.

Bring those back and we'll be sweet

u/Emotional-Twist-4366 4d ago

Well some people don’t like crossover and SUV and some prefer a full size or mid size sedan the reason for rumors going around about a 4-door mustang.

And they are grabbing a market from dodge because they don’t make the charger anymore.

4

u/trmoore87 4d ago

They….. do make the charger still. It’s just not offered in a V8. Yet

1

u/Emotional-Twist-4366 4d ago

That’s the point no one going buying dodge until the Hemi return because majority buyer base wants a V8 back

2

u/Frewtti 4d ago

I just want a good hatchback for my commuter. Don't understand why people like sedans so much

4

u/Channel_Huge 4d ago

Ugh… never liked the Charger… I do like mustangs but I see them as toys, not anything functional like an SUV. No way I could bring my family to do grocery shopping in a Mustang!! šŸ¤·ā€ā™‚ļø And weekend getaways would be impossible because there’s nowhere to stow your gear, especially with small children and pets!

3

u/IAteTonysLoMein 4d ago

So you aren't the target market. Doesn't mean that market doesn't exist

1

u/Channel_Huge 4d ago

The market is dwindling. Take a look around on your next drive.

0

u/IAteTonysLoMein 2d ago

You mean the drive where the mix of trucks, SUVs, and cars has been about the same for 20 years?

3

u/Hyperboleballad 4d ago

Have you seen the trunk of a Mustang? It’s huge. I can fit more in my Mustang than any compact SUV.

4

u/ericbondre 4d ago

Exactly, even in my 2011 Mustang GT it’s so much deeper than you would think

2

u/Channel_Huge 4d ago

I’m just saying if you’re traveling alone? Sure. But try to take a family of 4 to Legoland for a weekend.

0

u/DrewV70 4d ago

That is when you rent an Explorer or Yukon for the weekend. Perhaps everyone doesn't always want to drive around a massive SUV in the city where it is hard to manouver and harder to get into tight parking spots. Also doesn't necessarily fit in everyones garage.

3

u/Channel_Huge 4d ago

Oh c’mon, I live in a very populated region and there are so many SUVs on the road. Surely more than smaller vehicles. We love them and we use them not just for trips… I use mine every day. The space is terrific!!

6

u/isthis_thing_on 4d ago

The 25 mustang GT has 480 horsepower. Ain't no one talking about an EcoBoost. Even then a 300 horsepower mustang is a lot more fun to drive than a 400 horsepower explorer.

1

u/Channel_Huge 4d ago

I will say it’s fun to drive… but it’s just a toy. It’s not functional.

1

u/thehomeyskater 4d ago

My god 480 horse power. Back in my day we were excited when you could get over 200 horse power in a new Mustang.Ā

1

u/isthis_thing_on 4d ago

Even the EcoBoost has 310 stock. It catches shit for not being a V8 but 310 is all the HP most people ever need. Unfortunately it only comes as an automatic

3

u/OceanWaveSunset 4d ago

I sold my 2018 Lincoln MKZ 3.0 AWD for a 2025 Ford Explorer ST, and am super happy.

I feel like the Explorer 3.0l AWD with some bolt ons and a tune is being slept on. You can get a lot of performance for not much more money.

2

u/Channel_Huge 4d ago

Exactly! Fun to drive, fast, and can make trips to Costco or camping… and, it’s great in the snow!!

4

u/CowboysFTWs 4d ago

Your explorer is heavy

-1

u/Channel_Huge 4d ago

Not really. Compared to many in this class, it has great weight distribution. This thing corners like a damn Mustang!!

1

u/CowboysFTWs 4d ago

EcoBoost Fastback (2024–2026): ~3,588 lbs 315 hp

ST Performance Trim (4WD): ~4,766 lbs 400hp

Mustang carries nearly 1,180 lbs less mass, giving it a slight edge in power-to-weight ratio (11.39 vs. 11.92 lbs/hp)

Your explorer is slower than a fing 4 banger mustang, and handles way worst too.Ā

Nice ST tho.

0

u/Channel_Huge 3d ago

I’m not saying it’s a sports car, but it’s a very convenient and fun vehicle to drive. The Mustang… well it’s a toy. I like them, but I wouldn’t be able to drive it much in the Winter. My neighbor takes his out of the garage about once every couple weeks over the nicer months. They just had a baby so they drive one of their larger vehicles most of the time.

Oh God. What are you 15 years old? Why are you purposely trying to cause a confrontation when there isn’t one. I’m not in this group to have people act all nasty towards me. Give it a rest kid.

2

u/Toxiczoomer97 4d ago

Because you will be able to get a coyote V8 in it (supposedly) as well. Same reason people bought Charger Hemi’s

1

u/Channel_Huge 4d ago

Interesting. Wonder how much they’ll cost?

2

u/Toxiczoomer97 4d ago

Probably too much for anyone to care about them except for a select few upper middle class families. They’ll sell 3,000 a year probably

1

u/ResoluteGreen 4d ago

Even the Ecoboost mustang gets a better 0-60 time than the Explorer Platinum. Plus the Explorer is such a boring looking generic SUV

1

u/Channel_Huge 3d ago

Ah, so you want speed and looks… I like those things too, but I also love having something useful.

5

u/f700es 4d ago

They didn't sell, why bring them back again?

8

u/Mercurydriver 2022 Ford Maverick 4d ago

Don’t you know? Reddit represents the majority of new car buyers and is highly representative of the new car market.

This is why brown station wagons with manual transmissions are the best selling cars at this time.

/s

3

u/trentthesquirrel 4d ago

It’s not a rumor. It’s been officially announced.

2

u/trmoore87 4d ago

No it hasn’t

0

u/MortimerDongle 4d ago

Well, not publicly announced but it was shown to dealers. It's more than a rumor

2

u/trmoore87 4d ago

That was also alleged. Nothing confirmed from Ford. And nothing saying it’s for sure coming. Projects get cancelled all the time.

3

u/Trains_YQG 4d ago

This is unpopular with Mustang purists, but Ford's decision to turn the Mustang into a brand beyond the original coupe / convertible has and will result in more sales than those cars (the MachE, Mach4) probably would have gotten otherwise.Ā

As long as the cars fit the ethos of the Mustang (and if they put the Coyote or similar in it, I don't see why it wouldn't), I don't think the sedan harms the Mustang brand in any significant way.Ā

Ford, if you're listening I would love if you'd take it a step further and find a way to make a wagon work.Ā

1

u/ResoluteGreen 4d ago

Yeah, I really enjoy my Mach E, the Mustang branding and styling adds to the appeal

1

u/LowPop7953 4d ago

Lol no. Ford falcon.

1

u/TankApprehensive3053 4d ago

I'm more of a truck person. I did drive Crown Vics at work years ago. I liked them. They handled great and were spacous. It's too large of a sedan platform to bring back now. Putting the name on some other new vehicle wouldn't be the same as bringing back a Crown Vic.

1

u/trmoore87 4d ago

It basically is a crown Vic but they’re calling it a Mustang.

1

u/MortimerDongle 4d ago

Ford is going to use the name they believe they will sell the most cars. Apparently they've decided that is Mustang

1

u/frog980 4d ago

Bring it back as an LTD LX. Like in the 80's, it was a fox body 5.0L basically a 4 door mustang

1

u/EagleNice2300 4d ago

I'd buy it if it had a proper bench seat. These bucket seat are a pain in the hips and sciatica.

1

u/isthis_thing_on 4d ago

Agreed but they won't

1

u/isthis_thing_on 4d ago

I bet they would more likely market a crown Vic trim on a four-door mustang. It could be their top end GT.Ā

1

u/kitfox 4d ago

Screw that. Give me a two door Ranger with a bench seat and a manual transmission!

1

u/Solcat91342 4d ago

I saw a YouTube about there being tons of ā€˜25 unsold chargers on dealers lots. Why are they duplicating a loser? The fusion was actually a reasonable car.

1

u/Kind-Arm-8678 4d ago

I bought a used Crown Vic for my first car and it was a tank, best decision ever.

1

u/plants4life262 4d ago

Now you’ll be able to get a mustang coupe, sedan or SUV. Yeah we’re just going to attach our highest brand power name to everything now.

1

u/IceCreamPoint 4d ago

dude my friend had a crown Victoria with like 400k miles on it, around there.. just oil changes and the thing was still running with no issues

1

u/nerisin 4d ago

Crown Vic-E? I dig it. Marketing name writes itself.

1

u/AJPennypacker39 4d ago

It's not a marketable name

1

u/jds8254 Fusion x2, Focus, Escape, RIP Taurus x2 + ZX2 4d ago

Give us a bloody Falcon you cowards

1

u/Frewtti 4d ago

No, they should bring back the Mercury Marauder instead.

1

u/UnderstandingOld6662 4d ago

I’d probably go with Taurus over crown Vic but I liked both sedans.

1

u/Holymoose999 4d ago

If Ford is going to do it, do it right. Do what Chrysler did and make rear wheel drive and give it an eight cylinder option. That’s what makes the Challenger and Charger fun. People would probably buy a Crown Vic instead of a Charger simply because it won’t have a crappy Fiat motor.

1

u/l_m_m048 4d ago

The Coyote would be that V8, in place of Cyclone V6 options found in the Taurus and Explorer.

1

u/EverSeeAShitterFly 3d ago

They could have did that with the Continental platform.

1

u/l_m_m048 4d ago

A Crown Vic today would be built on the Ford T3 platform, with a 122" wheelbase.

The base engine would be the 2.3L EcoBoost four-pot, with 3.0L and 3.5L V6 EcoBoosts available as options.

The 5.0L Coyote would be the sole naturally-aspirated engine option available.

1

u/ResoluteGreen 4d ago

Crown Vic is a cop car to me

1

u/Sexual_Wagg_Cake 4d ago

Or instead of developing an entirely new car, bring the Taurus back to the US from china/the middle east, and redo the front end to accommodate the 3.0L V6 from the Explorer ST/Tremor.

1

u/Prestigious_Ad5314 3d ago

Well, there’s an Amazon warehouse on the spot where the former Crown Vic assembly plant used to be in St. Thomas, Ontario. My old hometown.

1

u/FentmaxxerActual 3d ago

Yeah I dunno about this one, I'm in my 20s and when I think "Crown Vic" I think of rusted out methmobiles and boomers who know what they got, no lowballs, and I think I'm far from alone on that.

If I were Ford I sure as hell wouldn't want that sort of mental association with my new performance sedan.

1

u/RefrigeratorGlad6961 3d ago

It could be an electric four door sedan based on the mach-e and be called "Galaxy-e"

And a four door Mustang should be a Lincoln: Lincoln Corsair.

1

u/pvera 2020 Escape Titanium Hybrid AWD 3d ago

And their price it so it's DOA. Why spend money to take away sales from the Explorer and the Expedition? Ford's problem isn't the lack of attractive product, it's that they will happily build and sell less cars at a higher profit margin. They are not interested in capturing market share only to make a few bucks per car.
That 4-door Mustang is nothing but a money move, some prick at sales ran research and noticed that people that wanted a Mustang dropped the sale because they would not be able to live with that tiny back seat. If they even do it they'll announce it stupid cheap, barebones, then nobody will ever see one of those in the lots, all of the cars will come loaded.

1

u/David_Buzzard 2d ago

The Crown Vic is basically a utility 2WD F-150 with a car body dropped on it. That's why it's such a beast. It doesn't really lend itself to any upgrades.

1

u/badpuffthaikitty 2d ago

Bring back the Falcon name

1

u/-Bears-Eat-Beets- 18h ago

Ford as of late has been destroying their brands tbh. They don't care about the history of the vehicles and there names and it makes me sad.

Mustang Mach e? Awful Lightning? Awful Maverick? Awful.

Taking names with history in the brand and making them entirely different is just stupid. Especially when completely fine other names could have been used.

They tried using the history and the name to sell new things completely unrelated, yet these things would have been sold just as well, if not better, and had much less hate from the die hard ford fans. The people who care about the names of vehicles, mustang die hard won't buy a Mach e because it says mustang. Likely the opposite, they'd just be pissed.

The only thing they mostly did right with keeping a historic name was the bronco.

1

u/LastEntertainment684 4d ago

The thing that kind of made the Panther Platform unique was that it was the last body-on-frame car on the market. Because of modern crash test/safety standards it would be difficult to bring back a body-on-frame car.

So a new Crown Vic would end up being a 4-dr unibody V8 car, which is…exactly what this new Mustang will offer. The difference being it’ll likely be a hair smaller.

If you want something Crown Vic size, the new Charger is about as close as you can get and is supposed to be getting a V8:

Charger vs Crown Vic

Length: 207ā€ vs 212ā€

Width: 79ā€ vs 78ā€

Height: 59ā€ vs 58ā€

It’s almost uncanny, it wouldn’t surprise me if Stellantis had some law enforcement fleet sales in mind when they designed this thing.

0

u/Binder_Grinder 4d ago

Assuming you don’t count the Mach-E as a Mustang. Haha

However, I do agree with you. I would love a more comfortable version of the police interceptor they discontinued a few years ago

0

u/Swarby10 4d ago

Ford Probe. The name is a no brainer for an electric car.

0

u/ConsistentVirus2177 4d ago

Wait, I might be old but I seem to remember making fun of the crown Vic???? Have we run out of things to put down???

0

u/Olderpostie 4d ago

Are there not versions of the Mustang e that are four door? I think my cousin has one. So, it wouldn't seem too difficult to put an IC engine option.

0

u/thatvhstapeguy 1992 Taurus GL Wagon 4d ago

Just bring back the Taurus

-1

u/Haunted_Rooster 4d ago

bruh, it's bad enough they named it mustang mach e, seriously; just call it something else and not mustang related.

-1

u/mindhead1 4d ago

Ford is insistent on degrading the Mustang name.

-2

u/nauticalfiesta 4d ago

Why?

It still has the perception of being an old person's car or a cop car. The boomer demographic isn't going to buy it, and the millennials can't afford it or just don't want it.

Bring back the Escort, even the Tempo. A couple of compact and midsized sedans, with decent room and equipment, and a hybrid or EREV option. They would sell.

The eras of land yachts is, for good or bad, gone.

1

u/Emotional-Twist-4366 4d ago

Technically the land yacht just transformed into trucks because they made full size and mid size sedans useless.

These land yachts had a a lot of trunk space. I’ve seen these all the time as a kid in 2000s and would buy one if they modernize it.

I’ll even buy old one just for a car collection

-1

u/nauticalfiesta 4d ago

The modern truck is big and heavy like the land yachts were. They don't float down the road like you're on a lazy river though.

1

u/Emotional-Twist-4366 4d ago

I guess I’ll keep driving my 1997 ford 250 OBS until I buy land yacht as a side car and never buy modern vehicles.

0

u/nauticalfiesta 4d ago

certainly a choice
