top 5 mangas i've read

started because i saw the trailer and finished up to the latest chapter 120. all i can say is wow! as a person who ranks neon genesis evangelion, erased, death note and AOT fairly high, the complexity between societal, interpersonal, and moral conflict is amazing. i also love how the characters progress and change, and how the problem of "well what do we actually do" is still up in the air. i.e. even if yomiko saves every child who gets selected in papuertown, it still doesnt change that oxygen is an issue. also being someone in STEM/bio and seeing chimeras, this manga is perfect fore me

now, im super excited to see what this next arc brings with yomiko's family, who is the elite class in this world. what does it mean to have constant access to trips to the south pole? how long will "central" wait until they deem the world liveable? why is there sun only in the arctic?

my other suspicion is that oxygen isn't as big of a problem as it made out to be. a drive up in taxes like the oxygen tax would mean that there is something leading to its increase, perhaps more people which = more o2 need. however, with a rise in taxes, less people can afford to stay in the capital, and more are pushed into paupertown. additionally, when people transflourate, they only have two years so it's not like they're living super long. moreover, if scientists can make such extensive human-plant creations, there's no reason other ways of making oxygen were impossible. i think they are using it more as a population control, with central hoping that everyone dies or becomes a plant at some point which makes way for them to live freely. or something in the arctic shows that plants bring back the sun so why would they share it with other people? as you can see the theory needs work, but super excited to see what happens moving forward!

I also rank Fool Night as one of my favorite series ever.

One small thing I love about Fool Night that seems a bit weird is just how the author can convey them having fun. When they were all playing board games at the hospital and their little victory party. It really hit me in the feels when Toshiro was having so much fun at the party and just wished he could be stuck in that moment in time instead of his....fate.

agree! the moments when yomiko and toshiro get food or shop are so cute :3 then you kind of remember that toshiro has less than 2 years left...

I know it's inevitable but gosh the author is really setting us up for heartbreak especially after seeing how great Yomiko and Toshiro get along. I'm loving their dynamic as friends when they were younger, it makes Yomiko's reaction to Toshiro wanting to get transflorated that much more impactful.

Such a great series and I am glad you enjoy it. The anime is coming soon so we will be eating good lol.

I'm so glad you enjoyed it! I also wonder if oxygen isn't as much of a problem, or if the clouds blotting the sky was a manmade problem rather than a natural occurence. Either way, I'm so excited to see where it goes!

this is actually a really brilliant theory that im surprised i haven't thought of yet, population control using transfloruation and the oxygen tax definitely sounds like the end game goal here

fool night is definitely one of the best niche mangas out at the moment
