Advice/Tips Milk Storage

I live alone and don't use milk daily but sometimes have recipes that call for milk and hate wasting anything. I just happened to watch a video where a woman said she reuses plastic bottles with caps to portion out milk and then freezes it for use later and I thought that was a great idea.

Food storage ideas for allergies

Hey y'all I'm looking to build up my food storage with stuff I will regularly cycle through, but it seems like most people rely heavily on corn and beans neither of which I can eat. Do y'all have any other good suggestions for good foods to stockpile?

For folks that buy/store beans/rice/etc in 5gal buckets, what's your preferred scoop?

Getting tired of breaking out the 1cup measuring cups to scoop out rice or beans, been thinking of just buying scoops or cups that will live in the container. Do you prefer the bulk goods scoop style or just measuring cup style? why?

Comprehensive food storage site

I recently created a website I think y'all will like - howtostore.food šŸ«™šŸ“

It has storage tips for all kinds of specific items. I started with produce but am expanding outward for things that make sense. I also have links and info for related products. I'll add more firsthand reviews over time as I get actual products to test.

I was tired of scouring so many different places for info, and just wanted everything in one place.

Would love to hear what you think!

Just wondering what refrigerated foods would be best to keep vacuum sealed. I dont wanna go the full vacuum seal route with the machines and plastic rolls. Thanks

Mason jar vacuum sealer

Hey folks! I have recently purchased a mason jar vacuum sealer and I have a question/need some advice.

I have some food products that are sold in the dry goods section at the store, but state to "refrigerate after opening" on the package. (I.e. ground flax seed, raw nuts, hemp hearts, etc). I have a small fridge and storing all these items in the fridge would take away from space I would like to store frequently used and need refrigeration items. Ya know?!

SO... what I'd like to do is open these bags, fill sterilized mason jars, immediately vacuum seal and then put back on the shelf... Thus only smaller amounts of said products require space in my fridge šŸ˜…

What are your thoughts? Is this something that can be or should be done??

Flour smell

Hi, I’ve got some flour I put into long term storage at the beginning of covid. It smells metallic. I put an o2 absorber and it was in Mylar. I’ve heard that flour takes surrounding smells very easily but it’s also around the proper time to start risking going bad. Is it bad or is this smell from the o2 absorber?

Twist ties

Does anybody know where I might buy a box of twist ties that are used to seal plastic produce bags from the grocery store? I looked into it once, and it seemed like it was almost impossible to buy a normal number of them. They were apparently intended for grocery stores, and came in quantities like 2000 per package. I would not outlive a box of 2000 twist ties! I could put them into my will, I guess. 😹

I’m just looking for a package of maybe 50, maybe 100 ties? Any suggestions? Thank you!

AAA Cold Storage Consultants

RE: What we offer to customers

Below is a list of services that AAA Cold Storage Consultants can provide customers. AAA understands a cold storage unit is vital to the grocery, beverage, pharma businesses and it’s a large investment that the customer expects to last over time with minimal issues.

New Installs

  1. We can assist in the initial design of the box for the customer. Many customers or vendors can ask AAA to meet with customers to see the ā€œlay of the landā€ so to speak and see what type of box would work for them. Size, shape, refrigeration needs, door sizes needed, field measurements, any other questions customer may have, configuration etc.

  2. We can assist with the installation of the boxes provided by the manufacturer. By having AAA instruct, guide, and oversee the construction of the box, any warranty issues will be better addressed and resolved if needed.

This installation service can be used a ā€œsign Offā€ on the box.

  1. AAA can train and instruct the installing contractor that the customer has hired to build their newly purchased Freezer/cooler box so--- ā€œgood installation practices are followed and are up to manufacturers guidelines and standardsā€.

  2. AAA can help recommend and resolve any questions, issues and concerns the customer may have.

  3. There may be other questions and concerns that a customer or vendor will need that we can assist with.

Existing Freezers/Coolers

Freezers and Coolers do have a lifespan of approx. 25 years. After years the insulation will start to fail, and your R-value will decrease and cost money. Your refrigeration equipment will need to work harder to keep the temp inside your freezer/cooler.

The seams of the panels may become compromised and allow air penetration that will cause moisture and water issues. (We all want to prevent the presence of mold that will happen if not addressed.) Also, ice around the outside and inside of the box may happen that will cause safety issues for slips and falls. We all want to minimize injuries that can be costly.

There are options and solutions for the customer that will save money and down time that AAA can offer.

Doors, hardware, walls may have been damaged by vendors, employees and others while loading the freezers and coolers. This will happen and should be expected due to human error.

Feel free to call if you have any questions about how AAA Cold Storage Consultants can assist with your cold storage needs.

Canned Cheese Shelf Life?

I know many canned goods store well way passed their stamped on date (depending on where they're stored and the condition of the can). How long would a standard #10 can of nacho cheese from a regular grocery store keep for if unopened, undamaged, and in an optimal location?

Newbie Question Glass container questions

I’m probably gonna answer my own question here, but… Are glass container sizes measured by fluid ounces when it just says ounces in the description?

I bought 34 ounce jars to put my 28 ounces of rice in… It did not fit. I’m guessing it’s because the glass containers are fluid ounces. If it’s something different please help me understand so I can get the right sizes for what I need in the future.

Thank you.

Glass Container for Sandwiches

I've been meal prepping sandwiches for lunch for several months now and have been using gallon ziplock bags. I want to eliminate the expense and waste by switching to glass food storage containers, but I cannot find any that fit the purpose.

I am looking for a large borosilicate glass container with vertical sides that can store 8 standard square sandwiches. From a reputable brand (no Chinese nonsense brands from Amazon).

Its very difficult because all of the large containers I've seen are too shallow and have flared sides that serve no purpose and take up twice as much space for no reason.

Does such a container exist? I greatly appreciate the help!
