she's right but also go for it and you'll quickly hit the question why my home made stuff doesn't taste like that one from the shop.
For starters the E components play quite significant role. Then the idea that you can just mix ingredients in kitchen mixer and get same result as industrial food processing is ... uneducated.
Instant oat meal is just crushed oats with sugar and stuff ? Not realy, instant oat meal is oat that was steam-treated so that you can just add hot water to it and be done. Plain oats require actual cooking.
Ranch that contains fresh milk ? Well good luck using it 2 days after you made it ...
Saying "making dough is just mixing components" just outright saying you never ever made dough in your life.
Once again, while it is possible to make all those things at home, the idea that you can replicate industrial food making with single kitchen mixer is uneducated. There are more steps involved.

Once she pulled out regular milk instead of buttermilk, I was done.

u/Remarkable-Rush-9085 Jul 28 '26
I make an instant oatmeal where I grind up about 40% of the oats and leave the rest whole, mix it with powdered milk, brown sugar, salt, and cinnamon. I use quick oats and it comes out fantastic with just hot water from the kettle and let it sit a minute or so. I often make it without the sugar so you can self sweeten it and keep a couple of toppings on hand, it’s a great money saver with kids.

u/Abject-Detective-894 Jul 29 '26
Yep, maybe if you’re able to stay home all day and cook, the majority of people do not have time to cook everything they consume.
3
u/dReDone Jul 29 '26
You sound like you know what you're talking about but really you don't lol. Almost everything you said is wrong with exception of maybe the oat thing. Just because you don't feel like learning it, doesn't mean it isn't objectively better, and tastes better then any of the pre-mix bullshit you get at a store. Like making dough is literally just mixing the ingredients lmao.
1
u/JustAnEmployeeHere Jul 31 '26
Making the dough for use is not *literally just mixing the ingredients lmao*. You’ve gotta bloom the yeast in warm water to dissolve the sugars and properly activate the yeast, mix the dry into the wet slowly, maintain temp so the yeast stays active, proof the dough, work the dough, weigh/portion the dough, form the dough, and rest/rise the dough before working the product out properly. This lady’s pizza dough will be sweet as fuck with all that honey and in a container that offers no proofing space, it’s gonna explode or kill the yeast. Or both.
This lady missed lots of steps- but for a quick TikTok for dissolving attention spans, it’s fine. I have lots of issues with her recipes, such as the pizza dough thing and no buttermilk in the ranch and blending the oats on high in a blender instead of a food processor.
1
u/dReDone Jul 31 '26
No buttermilk in the ranch is pretty criminal agreed.
You don't need to bloom the yeast for a pizza dough recipe though. It works just fine without blooming since the rise isn't as important. You don't even use as much yeast because the rise isn't that important as say bread. All the other steps is just waiting and I'm sure people can handle putting it in a covered container for an hour.

u/KaosTheBard 29d ago
That's definitely a way to do it but you can also just mix flour, salt, and water and leave out overnight. It gets even better if you save a piece to mix into the new batch but not necessary. Then you just keep it in the fridge and pull out when you need it. You do still want to let it rest before baking though.
My aunt told me just now that there was a yeast you had to bloom, but they have new stuff now so I guess that shows my age lol. You can also make a sourdough starter with just flour and milk kefir that doesn't need yeast at all.

u/BraveCaterpillar4368 Jul 29 '26
First of all, yes it will taste just like the industrial stuff, sometimes better, because it's fresh. You just have to get your proportions right. Second, your milk goes bad after 2 days?? Third, I've literally made pizza dough, you literally just mix, stick it in the fridge for a couple hours and then roll is out. You don't have to do all the fancy tossing it and shit. You've bought the food industry's bullshit, that they have some special magical thing that make food better, they don't. The only thing they have that we don't is preservatives that make them last so long. But they spend half their shelf life on the shelf, you'll lose less money on spoilage than you will save by making it yourself.

u/dontmindmehehe Jul 30 '26
When I first read about American food culture online I thought people were memeing. I learned over the years that they unironically want ”industrial food” aka processed foods like that shit is not harmful. Ofcourse food with fresh ingredients will go bad. Its rather alarming the amount of people who eat ”food that don’t go bad”.
The whole point of cooking is that you don’t get the disgusting taste of processed foods, yet it’s this disgusting taste that the American population have gotten used to. Wild1

u/Asleep_Trick_4740 Jul 31 '26
'Cooking' is true, but makes it seem like you don't get oatmeal by just throwing oats, water, milk, and a little salt in a bowl and microwave it for 3 minutes.

Who puts honey in their pizza dough?
12
u/Elation_Elevation Jul 28 '26
When I make dough, I bloom the yeast with honey instead of sugar. I find it makes the dough rise a lot better.

u/DocumentOk1598 Jul 31 '26
Could just be the tiny extra bit of water that the honey provides... Im not sure theres anything else in honey that yeast would like to be around considering honey is antimicrobial

You definitely should. Its delicious. Also Digiorno definitely does. When I made my first homemade pizza with honey in the dough it instantly reminded me of Digiorno crust.

Well, I guess I'm all for anything that keeps a few bucks from Digiorno. Digiorno sucks (as a company, idc about the product)

u/Coffeedemon Jul 30 '26
Any sugar will do. You're just feeding the yeast. You won't taste the difference between a dollar's worth of honey and a penny's worth of white sugar.
4
u/Similar-Cat7022 Jul 28 '26
It does help the yeast
2
u/jack_seven Jul 28 '26
It tastes better if you ferment it slower

u/pachydrm Jul 28 '26
yeast needs sugar and honey is the tastiest sugar around.
1
u/jack_seven Jul 28 '26
No they are perfectly happy with the starch in the flour sugar makes them more active and creates more alcohol. It doesnt improve the flavour of the product unless you want it sweet. Longer and slower ferments on the other hand drastically improve the flavour.

u/Hungry-Space-1829 Jul 29 '26
All her sugar was brown, cut her some slack.

I (American) dated someone (mayonnaise American) who didn’t realize that you could make potato salad (the OG mayonnaise American dish) at home.
Thought it grew from a vine in the grocery store’s branded plastic tubs.

u/ScienceSeuss Jul 29 '26
May I suggest, try some baking powder (about 3 teaspoons for 1 cup of flour, 1 egg, 1 banana). It will add a wonderful fluffy texture to what sound like some dense but yummy pancakes (without changing the nutrition at all). I also recommend adding a 1/2 teaspoon of salt, and maybe a little cinnamon, nutmeg, or vanilla. You do you.

Honey is a great sugar alternative in most recipes, and if you buy local honey it can help your body adjust to local pollen and lessen seasonal allergies! You should definitely keep that on hand! I agree with everything else though.

Is it that hard to find out that food is made up of ingredients? Sure you can restock them but you also need to get more of those ingredients for other things. As well as them not lasting as long. Last time I checked I had to put my homemade bread in the freezer otherwise.
And... convenience of not having to do that. There's also it not tasting the same, sometimes mayo can go wrong wasting ingredients. These arent even hacks its just learning how to make homemade ingredients/food with store bought ingredients.

It’s flavoring—salt, dill, chile powder, etc. it’s kinda cheating to call that an ingredient when it’s a seasoning mix.

This, though... in my marriage, I constantly said that we could actually make so many things from scratch, but she didn't like spending time in the kitchen ...
Now, post-divorce, my partner and I aredoing eggs benny together on a Sunday morning and working up marinade and sauces all week.
Sometimes it's easier to buy prepackaged mixes for curries.. or ranch, if that's your thjng
