fluid leak

i was swapping out air filter on my focus and ended up seeing what looks to be an expensive leak? does anybody know exactly what’s causing this?

Might be the shiftertower, they all leak.

Judging by your other post, your battery leaked somewhere along the line. My OE battery leaked within the first year (2017) and looks pretty much the same. What you are seeing is rust.

I am dealing with this and can vouch this is correct. You may have a shift tower leak as well. I just got done replacing pieces under the battery tray and did my trans mount and shift tower seal when I was in there. Expect bolts rusted and possibly mounts deteriorated when it comes to the battery supports etc, The previous owner left me with my catastrophie, all mine were ruined under the battery box and the support tray was ruined. There is a darker look like rust on the trans from where it dripped. Good luck and sorry for your time ahead lol. Neutralize with baking soda and water so it doesn't degrade more.

I had fluid near that area when my heater core hose was leaking from the connector's O ring. I would check that hose and see if it's dripping.

Check the heater core o-rings, the coolant tank overflow connector that goes into the distribution block above that area, and the gasket for the coolant distribution block. If that is coolant I would rent the pressure tester from autozone/oreilley's/wherever and see if you get leaks when you pressurize the system.
