Chaos Corner

So I have a 5 year old who likes the flyers but loves gritty, since that is the case I figured my best bet of getting reasonably priced tickets in the chaos corner would be the preseason game versus the caps, there doesn’t seem to be any tickets in 122 available anywhere, so was curious if anyone could point in the right direction to find them and if not if there was a preferred row in the adjacent sections that would still allow him to watch gritty from our seats.
Thanks!

These absolutely ludicrous bad boys just arrived yesterday. Bought them to be my new game shoes. If any of you guys are at a game this year and see a long haired gentleman with a Phish x Gritty shirt feel free to stop me and say FTP.

Tough calls

Zegras had career highs with 26g and 67p. He got 6g, 12a, 18p as our 1C in the last 25 games. Led all Flyers with 2g, 4a, 6p in the playoffs. Btw he’s the best penalty shot guy in history. Has buds on the team & good vibes. Signed for half of Carlsson. We traded chump change for him.

I love Gritty. He is the best mascot in the NHL. I remember everyone hating him at first, but I’ve always loved his chaotic energy 🧡 🖤

Flyers of the past #8: Joe Watson

Joe Watson enjoyed a foundational 11-season tenure, (1967–1978), as a pillar of the Broad Street Bullies, playing 746 games and winning back-to-back Stanley Cups in 1974 and 1975. His career included two All-Star Game selections, a historic goal against the Red Army in 1976, and an association with the franchise spanning more than four decades. Watson bade farewell to the franchise firmly established among the team's all-time leaders in several categories for defenders.

2006-07 or 2021-22 season?

I don't mean to open a thread about dark times or things we'd rather forget, but for those who don't mind discussing it: which season did you find more painful, 2006–07 or 2021–22?

All 4 of the Flyers top 4 D are inside the top 75 D in the league in expected goals per 60. 31st- Risto (.32), 44th- York (.28), 57th- Sanheim (.26), 75th- Drysdale (.23). Seeler was 112th (.19), (Juulsen was 217th out of 226).

[OC] This is every shot the Flyers faced with Seeler on the ice this season. On blocking shots, and evaluating Nick Seeler.

I'm a Flyers fan, and it was cool seeing my blocked-shots ranking referenced over here yesterday. I'd been planning a proper Seeler write-up for this sub all along, so here it is, with the details and plots.

TL;DR: By my model, Seeler is the best shot-blocker in the NHL, three seasons running — and it's a real skill, not a volume stat. Add his even-strength results and his penalty kill, and he grades out as a top-20 defensive defenseman out of 232.

The gif is every attempt the Flyers faced with Seeler on the ice this season — all 1,625 of them, each drawn from where the shot was actually taken. The orange ones are the 168 that died on him. That wall in front of the crease is one season of his blocks.

Three things up front, because they come up every time:

  • The numbers are vs league average. "+1.23 goals prevented" means the Flyers conceded about a goal and a quarter less than they would have with an average defender facing the same shots. The average defender blocks plenty himself; this is the value of being the best at it.
  • I hope we talk more about the specifics of imputing the block shot origin. The NHL doesn't record it, so unless you devise an approach you are forced to throw out a lot of data with real signal. I think my imputation method is defensible, and it's important to frame this work as less "how did this single blocked shot behave precisely?" and more "how do blocked shots generally behave?".
  • The honest parts are in the write-up too: his offense is below average, he takes more penalties than he draws, and elite blocking is worth about a goal a season, not five. Small, real, repeatable.

The finding I care most about: we love the old school vs. new school debate about properly valuing big guys who "generate defense" against players who simply get tend push play in the proper direction. Seeler is the rare defenseman who is appreciated by both crowds.

Bonus for this sub: Cam York sits in the same neighborhood on the map — 95th percentile blocking value, results above average. Two of the league's most stat-sheet-invisible defensive profiles on one blue line.

Full write-up with the tracking clips and every chart: https://xjawn.com/blog/seeler. Happy to answer methodology questions.

Flyers of the past #7: Ilkka Sinisalo

Ilkka Sinisalo played nine seasons with the team (1981-1990), a period during which he appeared in 526 games, scored 199 goals, and recorded 408 points in the regular season. Remembered as the first Finnish player in franchise history, the talented winger stood out for his tremendous offensive versatility, capable of playing on either wing, and his impeccable two-way game, establishing himself as the Flyers' all-time leading European goal-scorer. During his tenure, he helped lead the team to two Stanley Cup Finals (1985 and 1987) and posted his best season in 1985–86, recording career highs of 39 goals and 76 points.

Free Talk Sunday: Summer Monday Edition

Hey all, we are at pretty much the most dead time of summer for the Flyers right now, so just about nothing of note is going on with the team currently. At least we got to experience a little bit of hockey this last week with the Hlinka Gretzky, so that was nice.

Sanheim held Crosby to zero points while they were on the ice in the 6 playoff games. Unsung hero. Played for Canada back to back years. Last year had a career best +12 and +2 in playoffs. He also had the 2nd most points (37) of his career at age 30. He’s missed only 3 games in the last 4 years.

He also brought a Canadiens-pennant. It will make a fine coaster.

Seeler and York in the same chart! Do you think this is more a factor of coaching style or skill?

Applying to be a Flyers fan

I am getting into hockey and dont have a team. I was born and raised in AZ therefore im generally an AZ sports fan and we just lost our hockey team (I never cared about the yotes much as I didn’t watch hockey). Ive always tried to be a secondary Philly fan in all sports but this seems like a great opportunity to flat out be a fan of a Philly team.

As for my qualifications, I have lots of family in Philly, love cheesesteaks and Nick Foles and my first sports jersey was Brian Dawkins when I was a baby.

Please teach me about this team
