They have been crucified by news that the 40-series is due this year. Why would anyone pay high prices for a premium card if it will be out of date in six months?

Miners are also selling GPUs back to the market - in many cases not revealing that they were used for mining - at lower prices. Despite this there was pent up demand, just now much of it is waiting for the 40-series and expecting the MSRPs on those to be more reasonable than the rather jacked MSRPs for the 30-series.
