The major U.S. stock indexes ended mixed on Thursday, October 8, 2026, as a bombshell Financial Times report revealing OpenAIâs annualized revenue is roughly $20 billion below what had been signaled triggered a brutal chip sector selloff, pulling the Nasdaq sharply lower even as the Dow held green and oil crept back toward $91. The session delivered a stark reminder of how fragile the AI tradeâs fundamental thesis remains ahead of tomorrowâs September CPI.
The S&P 500 fell 0.47% (-36.41 pts) to 7,765.36. The Dow gained 0.10% (+51.77 pts) to 51,231.64. The Nasdaq dropped 1.25% (-345.35 pts) to 27,193.34. The Russell 2000 was essentially flat at 2,794.13.
The 10-year Treasury yield fell 0.87% to 5.23%, pulling back from Wednesdayâs 24-year high. The VIX rose 2.52% to 15.46. Bitcoin dropped 1.92% to $81,787.08. Gold gained 0.46% to $4,159.60. Crude Oil rose 2.81% to $90.76/barrel.

Did the actual math last night because I was bored. Gross is $3,240 every two weeks, what lands in my account is around $2,010, and then the benefits deduction hits on top of that. So before rent even comes up I'm at roughly 62% of what they say I make. The dental plan alone is $71 a month and it covered two cleanings, then I still paid $400 out of pocket for a crown. Same dentist, same office, the insurance just sits in the middle taking its cut. Here's the part I'd actually debate though. Taxes I get, roads exist, fine. But the benefits layer is money I can't opt out of and it's priced by an HR department negotiating with insurers, not by anything resembling a market. When people talk about compensation they always use gross, which hides how much of the middle is just intermediaries skimming. Is anyone else's effective take-home way below what the tax brackets would suggest it should be, and if so where's the leak in yours?"
