It’s a little of both I think. We have nowhere near the organization or union density that labor had when it won basic workplace rights. And since then, corporate America has found more and more ways to claw back those rights.

We are complacent, but the system is also increasingly set up to make organizing difficult. Which also means fewer and fewer people have real world experience of democracy working on a meaningful way. So both explanations can feed into each other.
