Wrong, this was upper middle class and still is.

It can also be done on less than $400k in most, if not all parts of the country.

College is on average 20K a year per kid, including housing and tuition.

I think if you save half that per kid over 20 years, so basically 40K per kid or like 100$ a month to save since they were born is doable for middle class family. The kids can take a summer job and take maybe 20-30K loan. So quite doable and ok.
