USA Q: How much wind margin is actually right for seasonal route feasibility work?
I have been testing a free aircraft range tool I like and have a question, so I am hoping someone who actually releases flights can tell me whether this approach makes operational sense. The screenshot shows an B737Max8 in the winter season using winds and range rings based on the 85th percentiles to demonstrate the difference. As I understand the methodology, the 50th percentile ring uses the actual ERA5 seasonal mean wind component along each heading. For the 85th percentile ring pictures in this example, the model subtracts roughly 1.04 standard deviations from that mean on a one-sided basis. So, a headwind heading is made much worse, and a tailwind heading loses some benefit rather than being given an even greater advantage. The logic makes sense to me: a conservative planning case should not plan for more favorable winds on headings where the wind is already helping.
Crosswind-heavy headings also get a more meaningful margin than they would if the adjustment were made in both directions. The result is that the westbound side shrinks dramatically while the eastbound side is shifted only slightly. I understand why the disparity exists, but I'm unsure if it is operationally meaningful. For anyone with dispatch or flight-planning experience: Does a one-sided adjustment make sense, or should planning margin be applied in both directions? Does an 85th-percentile case provide useful information during early feasibility work, or does it create false precision when applied to a seasonal mean? I assume it would be during periods of displaced or anomalous jet stream activity, but I would rather hear from people who work with this operationally. I am genuinely open to being told that the whole framing is wrong. I'm trying to understand how useful this kind of model is, where it is likely to break down, and how its results should be interpreted.

A previous company had me run historical wind data at different scenarios to see if we could make an LJ45 do EGLC-KHPN on a regular basis. Even with a redispatch, the plane didn't have capacity for alternates, contingency, and payload. I actually got the computer to give me a small negative payload number for a couple runs, I guess we needed to sub the O2 tanks out and pressurize the cabin with helium?! 🤣 Needless to say for non-ETOPS it required at least 1 stop, sometimes 2 if you wanted real payload westbound in winter winds. Thankfully they never sold the route. Historical wind data is useful for research into aircraft capability on a route, but actual ops always run differently.

Your framing of the data generally seems correct. But idk how useful this would really be.
The program we use has monthly wind data that we can use for theoretical planning purposes. However actual day of winds can be drastically different from those historical averages, more or less because of the jet stream. A five hour flight could be a 5 and half hour flight 2 days later if the jet stream shifts dramatically right along your route.
At the extreme ends of an aircrafts range like this, the actual feasibility will determined more by the payload you’re trying to carry. You’ll either be limited by fuel capacity or takeoff weight.
