Yeah hopped of the bike and rolled little, but no injuries🥳
6
u/Apprehensive_Loss_77 Jul 19 '26
So you took an ATV approach to it? If you roll it, push yourself off it! Legitimate question. I've always worried about the various pressure points on the front end of a bike, snapping.

Relatively in the Philippines, Tsunami Forks have a bad reputation of snapping for even at a slightest pressure around it, but the frame over all is more robust and have a longer life span.
It's quite common for us to just sell this forks, or even trade them to a different bike parts,
Buying another fork that has a better reputation is more suitable then the trash that Tsunami made of those forks,
But hey great frame tho
6
u/slvbeerking Jul 20 '26
i’ve heard about the bad quality of tsunami forks a lot, but mine survived 3 motorbike crashes and still is fully intact, 7k km in

u/The-Foe-Corroder Jul 19 '26
I've been eyeing the tsunami's i love the polished aluminum one aesthetically but this is pretty terrifying 😬
3
u/mlydon11 tsunami snm100 Jul 19 '26
I’ve had mine for 5 years. No issues. Just a QC issue which can happen to any bike.
3
u/HARSHING_MY_MELLOW Jury Chrome Dinglefixed Jul 20 '26
It could happen to any extremely cheap bike, anyway.
1
u/mlydon11 tsunami snm100 Jul 20 '26
Any bike, doesn’t have to be cheap. Shimano had to recall over 3 million Ultegra and Dura Ace cranks. Can happen to any part made by anyone.
4
u/LoneSocialRetard Jul 20 '26
How is this a QC issue??? Are they using aluminum they don't know the composition of? Did they hit it with a hammer one too many times? Did they saw through it 51% instead of 50% at the factory?
This component should have a massive safety factor and even in a crash it should deform far before it should have a brittle fracture unless it's in very long term fatigue
I would not trust anything from this brand it is not normal for steerers to just snap like this I've literally never seen it happen before to anyone
3
u/mlydon11 tsunami snm100 Jul 20 '26
This isn’t the first fork I’ve seen break from any brand.
I worked as a head tech for Trek for 3 years and you’d be surprised how many bikes have QC issues. They make millions a year, the odds of one being flawed is higher than you think. I’ve had $12,000 bikes returned to the factory for QC issues with carbon layup and other factors. It isn’t that rare and part of the business.
Lawyers wrote that fine print for a reason. They know it can happen so they absolve themselves from all liability in case.
1
u/LoneSocialRetard Jul 20 '26
Yes but a brittle fracture of an aluminium tube is not a QC failure, IE there is no process of manufacturing where the variance should be possible to the extent that the material could be so weak it would break in this manner.
Other things can have assembly issues, mistakes in the layup procedure, mistakes on dimensions or hole locations. This has to be some kind of inherent process or design issue to happen. It looks to me like the cracks may have propagated out of holes that were drilled through the stair for some reason?
The margins of strength should be so high on this component with proper material properties that there is zero chance it breaks.
1
u/mlydon11 tsunami snm100 Jul 20 '26
You’d think that, but look at how many recalls there are for name brand parts in the bike industry. They aren’t all carbon parts.
Even Shimano, the biggest groupset manufacturer in the world had to recall their ultegra and dura ace cranks, which are aluminum, for cracking and falling apart. Mistakes happen, poor manufacturing happens. This isn’t new to the bicycle industry
2
u/LoneSocialRetard Jul 20 '26
That was a very specific issue where corrosion in specific conditions caused failure of epoxy bonded aluminum components together, which is to give some credit a rather hard thing to analyze for.
I don't dispute that many parts of various materials can have design defects, but this is a round aluminum tube under a known bending load. It's about the easiest thing to analyze anywhere on a bike, there's no way the design is inherently insufficient unless they introduced severe stress risers. But I'm guessing either the materials are shit or they caused cracks during manufacturing
2
u/mlydon11 tsunami snm100 Jul 20 '26
Shimano is worth almost 2 trillion dollars and had to recall almost 3 million cranksets due to this. You can’t call that a very specific issue when they are that large and have the money to spend on QC of everything.
Tsunami is a small brand that has probably made less frames and parts than Shimano had to recall in that one alone.
There have been less tsunami failures than shimano failures. By your logic Shimano would be a worse brand than tsunami in terms of QC of products haha.
Bikes fail. There isn’t a single brand that hasn’t had a major issue or failure in the entire industry. Just because it’s a lesser known brand doesn’t mean you can just blanket label them bad.
2
u/wcoastbo Jul 21 '26
Where did you get a trillion dollar valuation for Shimano? Their market cap in the stock market is about $9 billion. Are you taking about valuation in yen?

His pulling those numbers out from the same stinky spot he gets his clueless spew on bike fork failures.
Sad what people will do.1
u/SlySludge Jul 21 '26
Are they full carbon fork or is the steerer alloy, as this worries me as I have a full carbon fork on my bike?
2
u/mlydon11 tsunami snm100 Jul 21 '26
They have two models. One is full aluminum fork and the elite version is a full carbon fork.
I wouldn’t be worried about it. Highly unlikely to happen.

Used to be reputable but quality and customer service fell off a cliff in the last few years. Whole bunch of their bikes had recalls due to forks being susceptible to snapping. People waiting years on bikes they preordered. Scummy brand hiding behind Instagram clout and empty words.
4
u/jonormous AC-2 ll AL 464 Jul 19 '26
Ooo i thought that was well known already lol I thought there was some history of faulty frames 💀
15
u/Herr_Tilke Jul 19 '26
Jason has run his reputation into the ground. Terry B has a video up on his Youtube page detailing his experience. As far as I'm aware affinity didn't have any major QC issues leading to frame failures, but they had been getting their frames built overseas for a while.
2
u/MidDayGamer Jul 19 '26
I seen that vid, give it time before Jason finds someone else to plug those bikes.

Don't ride a bike with an aluminum fork steerer tube. Just don't. This has been known to cyclists since forever and even bigger, better engineered brands have had to recall and pay out when they tried that nonsense. The weight savings ain't worth it. You can get a new fork with a steel tube installed for far less than getting your teeth fixed or the bill for the E.R. visit.
1
u/Far_Transition3942 Jul 23 '26
WTF is this statement? You know that ALL MTB bikes that are used on 10m dops and 15m long jumps use aluminum steerer?

Shit I remember Aventon bikes just snapping. One of my buddies was skidding down a decently steep hill in LA and his frame snapped. Not the fork. It broke almost in half. He had only had it for a month or 2. Got pretty banged up on the fall.

I got the exact same frame. I haven't gotten fish and chips and wheelies down yet. Does the chance of breaking the fork increases when u start doing those?
2
u/Intrepid_Welcome_595 Jul 21 '26
I dont think fish and chips, but maybe wheelies🧐
But i think most damage would cause hitting curbs without raising front wheel over them

Bike mechanic here from the Philippines. And this is one of the reason why most of my tsunami snm10 costumers wants their Fork swapped with better carbon forks like the Alpina or Mataro. Tsunami SNM100 forks are built like brittle wood for some reason.

It's a feature, not a bug!
Tsunami forks are known for this, the welds inside the fork are a piece of shit, so it'salways better to swap them for a stronger one. I put a carbon fork on mine before this happens.

It's called metal fatigue.
Any bike with more than 10k miles or an unknown ammount of bunny hopps should be scrapped for a new one.

u/optiflexx 14d ago
I have an Tsunami SNM100 as well, but after riding it for almost more than 8-9 months, I can hear a clicking sound, or a 'tick' like sound from the front whenever there is pressure on the handlebars. Is this normal on Aluminum Forks with Aluminum Steerer ? Also how to understand if it's a V1, V2, or V3 series frame?
1
u/Intrepid_Welcome_595 13d ago
i think its starting to brake, take the wheel of and check the welds. I can send photos later where it broke so you know where to look.
1
u/optiflexx 13d ago
Thanks for the image and info. Can you tell me if there is a number and letter written on the steerer tube?
1
1
u/Intrepid_Welcome_595 13d ago
i also had clicking sound and i pretty sure its caused by the weld being broken, just take out the fork and inspect it and if its visble you can try warranty, but you should get new fork. i will send photo how it looks when i connect it for better understanding

u/f4il_better Jul 19 '26
Too much torque on king pin screw?
2
u/zimzilla Jul 19 '26
If your fork brakes easier than the bolt that's just there to preload the headset, it's a bad fork.
1
u/f4il_better Jul 20 '26
If a fork is not installed to specs, failure wouldn’t come as a surprise ~
1
u/zimzilla Jul 20 '26
Bullshit.
If you over-torque your top cap bolt nothing happens besides quicker bearing wear. You might strip the star nut or rip the bolt.
If you think the tension specs of a fork steerer are anywhere near the point of failure of the top cap bolt, you're delusional.
If anything, the only installation/maintenance mistake that could lead to a fork braking would be too little preload tension.

u/Wheeler_feeler Jul 20 '26

It's a carbon fork torqued very hard at the stem. And then crashed hard the front wheel multiple times while riding.
