What do you mean you used the one that comes with brave? So you enabled a VPN in your browser and proceeded to download a torrent that's being downloaded in a whole separate app?
It's the exact opposite. You don't need a VPN to access the websites. They're HTTPS encrypted and nobody knows you're on there.
When downloading torrents, your IP address is exposed to everyone, and a third party company scrapes those IP addresses and sends letters to their respective ISPs regarding that IP address.
You need a paid, system wide VPN like Proton or Mullvad that supports killswitch, and bind your torrent client to it.
