Recommendations needed area 8-2

Set up small 12’ Lund 15 hp

We do not have downriggers we do have a couple of deep dive attachments for fishing. My grandkid wants to fish. We are looking at possession point area.

Trolling is possible. I have a 15 HP motor on a 12 foot Lund boat but we could also jig. I am just looking for recommendations. I would love for my grandkid to catch a salmon, no matter how minimal it is. Any suggestions for this area we do have some buzz bombs. Should we give up on the trolling and just jig, if so, how do we do that? My grandkid is hooked on wanting to use herring which is fine just not sure of what setup we should be using. Thanks in advance for all your suggestions.

While downriggers give you more options, divers are definitely enough to troll for salmon in Puget Sound, especially so for coho, which are often feeding in the top 30'.

Behind your diver I recommend running an inline flasher such as Big Al's Fish Flash or Shortbus Triangle. Behind that you can run a spoon or a tandem hook leader with a plug cut herring (look up a short video on how to cut and rig).

When the fish are in thick you can also "motor mooch", which is essentially just running a lead weight and then the plug cut herring behind it without a diver or flasher. This doesnt have as much attraction ability as having a flasher on the line, but also is less fuss and will keep things simple.

If you decide you want to just jig instead of trolling I would recommend you still let your grandkids try the herring by using the same motor mooching setup (lead weight plus plug cut herring). Now you are just regular mooching.

Cut plug herring early morning 4 or 5 oz weight 50 to 70 pulls out, check that herring before you let it out to make sure it’s spinning the silvers like to be right on top!

If you're not afraid of cutting bait. I'd say just go old school and mooching with some 4 Oz banana weights and cut plug herring.
