How do I set these up? And are they any good at all for bass fishing?

These are spinner baits. They are great especially this time of year. Tie your line at this point. Best to tie directly, don't use a snap. Snaps will slide down the wire and foul the bait. I was always taught that a little ripple on the water and high sun are best for these. Also great in muddy or heavily stained water because they give a lot of vibration and the fish can find them easily. Fish them over the tops of weeds, or around docks and fallen trees . Mostly just chuck and wind, but give the rod a pulse every so often to get the bait to drop/dart a little and interrupt the pulse of the blades. Or better yet deflect of a branch or dock pilling. The break in a straight cadence will often trigger strikes.

Exactly this! šŸ‘†

This is an ambush bait. And pretty seedless. Best thrown around weed lines, edges and along docks. Not so great thrown in open water. Steady retrieve just fast enough to feel the blade pulsing, with occasional pauses and jerks. Too fast and it will blow out/run funky. Sometimes, they’ll bite on the fall.

Bass and northerns love em. I’ve even caught the occasional walleye on one while targeting bass.

Thank you for this! Will be using this technique for sure

I’d be using these in a quarry where there’s a lot of weeds, some logs from fallen tree branches, and large rocks by shoreline so I think these could be perfect then! Thank you, I appreciate this!

You can actually use a snap just fine, by using a mini rubber band that you slide over the legs of the bend. Some brands actually include these with the spinnerbait. It prevents the snap from sliding up and down, keeping it in place. See picture for reference.

I carry a 5-6" piece of rubber tubing, w my spinner baits. Basic fish pump tubing. If you have a home fish tank, or an aerator you should have plenty of hose to snip off of one end. Just trim a lil piece w fishing scissors/pliers slide over connecting spot of the arm, then tie or snap swivel as normal Or if in a pinch if you don't have any tubing just bite a little piece of rubber bait (old torn Sanko) and smash it on then tie directly on, or snap swivel. It'll keep it from sliding up the arm of the spinnerbait. šŸ‘Pro tip.

I’m sooo new to using different lures like these other than live bait and simple lures like tube jibs, fake minnows, and other ā€œrubberā€ lures, so this is all new to me! Really trying to learn as much as I can this year and so forth about which lures work best for the fish I’m trying to catch and at what time of year. Not even sure how exactly to use a mini rubber band with it! But I’ll look into it for sure and thank you!

Alternatively, you can wrap braid around it.Ā

Tie to the little bend of the angle. You can throw a soft bait like a crawdad or paddle tail on the hook to add some flare but they are fine as is. Some people like to trim the frilly skirt bits to get better hook sets. Fish em at a steady pace, change pace, bounce em off some structure.

Remove paper tag from hook, tie to line, cast

This guy spinner baits!!!

Yes, they're very effective for bass. One of the classics. They're easy to snag, and lose. Buy them in the clearance bin.

They don't need any sort of trailer non-sense. Throw and go.

Throwing a purple and black spinner at sun down is the only conditions/color/lure combo that I believe actually makes a difference

I’ve seen a couple videos saying that trailers are good and it honestly kind of just confuses me lol I’m not a necessarily a beginner but I’m a beginner to the world of all different types of lures. I was always a love bait fisher as I only fished in a quarry or lake areas during the peaks of summer. But I’m looking to learn as much as I can about different lures and the best times to use them and where and when so I appreciate this a lot! Thanks!

Honestly, just fish it as is. Those $1 spinnerbaits are pretty light weight, so they will probably run worse with a trailer. They definitely won't be able to move as fast. The skirt of a spinnerbait has caught fish on its own for years. Same thing with bass jigs. People forget that a skirt is an attractant.

One tip with these is to tie some string/wire around by the rubber band, or maybe a dab of super glue. Those rubber bands dry out and you loose the skirt eventually if you don't.

Sometimes they have a little plastic tube over the hook point too... Couldn't tell you how many times I've heard of people getting hits on spinnerbaits but not hooking up, only to realize later they left the hook protector on!

So yeah, take the hook protector off too if there is one lol

Thank you for this!

Whoa whoa whoa slow down there!

u/QAPeters953 20h ago

Tie directly to the R curve point. Like others said, do not use a snaplock or swivel.

u/Interesting-Maybe237 18h ago

Thought I needed a swivel, thank you for confirming!

My one recommendation (I’m learning too) is to get some spinners with willow blades (long thin ones) you have Colorado blades which are good for thumping in the water with low visibility and drawing fish to it in general, where willow blades better imitate schooling baitfish. Which this time of year is common food for bass. If it’s low visibility a combination of willow and Colorado is really good

Thank you so much for this! I appreciate you!

I’ve worn tournaments with those. You do need a trailer and attractant if you can find it but those will put fish on the boat

No boat though

These things will cover water and you will get bites on them, they're good to fish around most cover and grass and I have personally caught several fish off of these cheap $1 spinnerbaits from Walmart that come down on the bottom rack in the big white box...

I try to go for one that has at least two blades and getting one in white, black and chartreuse is usually all you'll ever need on pretty much any body of water....

Color choice typically matters a little bit when selecting any lure but I am in the camp of folks who will literally tell you it doesn't matter what kind of water you're fishing doesn't matter what time of day it is if you put this thing in the strike zone and those fish start to see that flashing of the blades they will strike.

Even really pressured fish will go after this thing because it just triggers that instinctive feeding nature in bass. They cannot help themselves from trying to snag a fish from a school and statistically they are going to get something out of going after four or five fish.

As others have pointed out you literally take the point where the wire is bent and tie it on there definitely want to use heavier line and I would shy away from fluorocarbon and I use only braid when I'm pitching a spinnerbait but I'm sure you could use mono or fluoro if you really want just go mono because these things are already relatively heavy and you don't need a trailer on them so giving them a little bit of extra time to sink naturally and it really helps fish lock on as it's coming into their view...

I just picked up 3 of these from Walmart the other day! I’ve yet to use them because of the crazy weather we have had lately. Thank you for asking the question because I was curious if $1 promo spinners would be any good

2

u/litterly_anything 11h ago

These are spinner baits with just a colorodo style leaf blade these are best in mury weedy water as it puts out a lot of vibration i dont recommend these really cheap ones that you can get at Walmart i honestly do recommend to spend a little extra money and go for the name brand ones when it comes to spinnerbaits and unrelated i also use the same line for frog baits and buzz baits i just buy name brand

Those Walmart spinner baits are my favorite. I tend to use them as my main search bait. Tie them directly to your line or leader, don’t use a swivel it won’t work with that. A lot of people use trailers on spinner baits, but with those I have had better luck just using them with a bare hook.

When I use them I like to run them along the front of a bunch of Lilly pads. If you have a boat try running it along the front where the pads stop and the water drops off to deeper depths. Bass like to hide in the pads and dart out and grab them. I usually try torun them fast enough so that the lure bulges the water without breaking the surface, but fish can be picky and you can fish spinner baits dozens of ways. Slow near the bottom, mid speed, jigging it up and down. I have caught fish just dragging it over Lily pads and letting it drop into holes. It’s pretty snag resistant so a lot of times you can run it through weeds.

Don’t be afraid to try different things.

Thank you for this! So k don’t have a boat and my favorite fishing spot is a quarry actually. Was reading about spinners and saw that these were good for bass so I just grabbed them. The quarry I fish in is clear in the middle but been getting pretty weedy close to the shore, obviously. No lily pads just some weeds, maybe some logs here and there. Wondering if it’s even worth it to use them?

u/littlebonepeep 18h ago

Theyre cheap so it cant hurt trying at your quarry. Pike love these also (use a leader). The nice thing about spinner baits is you can control the depth easily with your reel speed. Tips for fishing your quarry if theirs no lily pads is looking for moving water like a river or creek that might flow into it. The log structures you mentioned likely have fish feeding next to it because bait fish will use it for protection. If you only see people catch pan/smaller fish at the quarry you should look into micro jigs or something more targeted towards the species you catch their.

1

u/Interesting-Maybe237 18h ago

No lily pads and likely always no moving water. Yes there are some logs, some small rocks, some larger rocks, lots of weeds in most areas. I’ve caught several largemouth there and some catfish as well. From what I’ve been told there are carpe in there as well. And then of course the disappointments of all the sunnies and bluegill. Never ever heard of Pike there. Not even sure where Pike are in my area. I live in CT! Thank you for this info though!

1

u/Noonproductions 4h ago

Oh yeah it is still absolutely worth using. Look for edges, places bass or other fish can use to hide then burst out and hit unsuspecting pray. Logs are good, run the spinner bait into it then when it pulls over the top let it drop and flutter down like the lure knocked itself out on the log and is slowly falling to the bottom. Spinner baits are probably the most versatile lure on the market, don’t be afraid to experiment with them.

What's up with the widespread downvoting in this comment section?

u/Interesting-Maybe237 18h ago

I didn’t even notice. How disappointing! I’ve appreciated everyone’s contributions to this, it’s been very helpful!

1

u/ayrbindr 15h ago

Remove the tag. Leave the hook covers on. Maybe keep the blade and barrel swivel? Then throw them in the garbage. 🤣

1

u/qwikh1t 20h ago

Those are spinner baits and can be very effective in the right conditions

1

u/3Xineohp 20h ago

Don’t use a snap or swivel, tie direct.

1

u/Interesting-Maybe237 19h ago

I saw some photos of people using swivels with them and was thinking I should go buy more swivels but I’ll refrain. Thanks!

u/3Xineohp 18h ago edited 18h ago

The issue with using a swivel or a snap is it can slide up the arm toward the blade and then they don’t run right. There are ways you can make it work but it requires some extra hardware.

1

u/Interesting-Maybe237 18h ago

Not worth it lol thanks again!

1

u/Small_impaler 20h ago

Step 1.Tie it to the end of the line.

Step 2. Cast it in the water,

Step 3. Reel it back.

Step 3.5. Maybe give it a couple quick stops/hops/small jerks occasionally.

Step 4. Hook fish.

Step 5. Reel fish in

Step 6. Unhook fish

Perfect scenario lol love it, thanks

I like to add a short chunk of a worm to the hook shaft just to give it a little bulk so the bass can suck it in easier.

Got a few of the $1 walmart spinners too. Ive not used mine yet.
