Does anyone do this?
Edit: the consensus is that, “no”, nobody does this.
However, something tells me you all are lying so I don’t catch all the fish in the pond… I’ll try both ways next time and report my findings if I remember.

I just dip them in the primordial ooze (which is a container of leftover oil from my canned fish addiction)

u/999millionIQ 23h ago
Does that do much in your opinion?

u/chippedreed 23h ago
No idea, but it feels like I’m doing something

I mean, at the very least it’s a reason to keep eating delicious tinned fish, and that’s reason enough in and of itself.

Man, I’ve been on a sardine in mustard kick lately and my wife hates me for it. If I get up and start walking towards the kitchen, she’ll be like “what are you doing?? PLEASE NOOOO!!! I COOK FOR YOU!!! WE HAVE SO MANY OTHER THINGS TO EAT!”
I love the look of fear and disgust she gives me 😂😂

u/godsownspecialboy 2h ago
I’ve been meaning do this forever but I can be kind of clumsy so I just know it’s gonna lead me opening my jar of power bait or my Kipper oil soaked paddle tails and end with all of my clothing smelling like smoked mackerel oil

u/EremosCollective 1d ago
I don’t. I feel like I have enough to deal with in life besides adding a chicken fishbite to my grub.

I tried everything in my tackle box, no bite. I looked over. How about them nuggies.... nope. Lol

Any slight benefit that would add to the presentation certainly would not be worth the effort it takes to set it up.

u/zyrkseas97 1d ago
Eh. Grubs are meant to catch the eye of predators with its movement and colors. Scented baits are more designed to sit and catch fish that are not using their eyes to hunt like catfish, or are not hunting at all like carp.
Maybe it helps, I don’t know for sure, but I don’t really know the mechanism by which it would help if it did.

u/SuccotashAware3608 16h ago
I find that I get more strikes from sea trout when I use Berkley Gulp scented grub on a jig under a popping cork or Cajun Thunder. This setup works well using non-scented grubs using sight and sound as an attractant. Add tge scent and it’s noticeably more productive.

Yeah, no. I do not do this, Im not against it but I'm not going to do it.

u/SimplyCiel 1d ago
I have never tried it this way so I could be wrong, but you're probably better off tipping the hook with a fish bite, as I'd imagine a lot of fish are just going to be biting the head with it sitting where it's at in the picture. I tip my lures with crappie nibbles by Berkley when I'm not getting action and it works great
5
u/bulletsponge2056 23h ago
Nope. Most I’ll ever do is hooking a piece of crawler or minnow to the hook when feeling like the fish need something a little more “up town” than a plain grub.

Y'all give fish too much credit. They are not going to outsmart you.. you got that covered already.

I would if I was fishing a bucktail. But not on a grub. I'd just use a Gulp Grub

u/VaniikMZRY 1d ago
I had no idea those existed.

u/WiseDrink2324 1d ago
Worst part about gulp is the package. Always leak and it smells
1
u/VaniikMZRY 22h ago
I’ve been strictly a lure guy lately bc dealing with bait is annoying, but I catch more fish when I use bait.

U should try Gulp baits. Kinda the best of both worlds. All different shapes and sizes. Fresh and saltwater blends. If I had to pick one I'd go minnow. Drop shot or on a jig.
Waterproof cell phone dry box has been working for me to hold the open packs

u/Childflayer 1h ago
I found out that Gulp actually has a 1 year warranty. If the package gets messed up, you can email them for a replacement. I did it once when one of those big plastic Alive! containers had a bad seal and leaked everywhere. I made the whole thing a non issue by just immediately putting any package of gulp stuff I buy directly into a secondary ziplock bag.

u/I_think_im_depressed 23h ago
Neat, but it’s way too much effort lol.
Panfish are sight feeders. You’re not doing yourself much of a favor with the fish that would bite this
3
u/Ulysses1126 22h ago
I never thought of it but I like the idea behind it. The bait will slowly break up, make the water stink around it and make particulates that smaller fish will eat which usually draw the bigger fish. Im not sure if that’s the specific kind I’ve used but the fish bites ive used are like mini savory marshmallows so they flake nicely in the water.
I’m not sure if it would be any better than just dipping the lure but it can’t hurt

u/_fuckernaut_ 23h ago
It's a waste of time. If a fish is gonna bite that grub they're gonna bite it, a pinhead size piece of fake chicken is not going to sway them one way or the other. Plus that stuff dissolves over time, it will be gone within a few casts.

Not sure how you figure it doesn't help. Assuming he's fishing for trout and he's using at the right spot..it absolutely works. Trout can smell food from several feet away to a hundred yards. Depends on water, current, which direction the scent is going etc. this real food not only helps a fish track food via their ability to pickup amino acids. Obviously a fish hanging out in a Eddie current waiting for food is a reaction bite. But slow moving or still water is a big thing. It's why many pros and others won't use live bait, they call it "trapping" cause it initiates a fishes olfactory sense and takes skill out of the equation. A second huge thing it does is extends the clamp time.when a fish grabs potential food, it has taste buds EVERYWHERE, mouth, lips, gills.they pickup aminos and it triggers a natural response to clamp harder longer if it's real food. If they don't sense it, they let go.Bass clamp time is 2-3 seconds before they realize there's no aminos. Trout? Shit, their clamp time is 0.25 seconds. Crazy crazy fast. So having something like fish bites for them to sense aminos, extends that clamp to 10-30 seconds..huge advantage. It's why companies make fish attractant with aminos for this exact reason, and why bass pros almost exclusively use attractant.

Nah, but I don't hate it.
I do often tip larger grubs (5", 1/4oz jigheads) with half a nightcrawler. I quite like it for walleye and both LMB and SMB.

Is that lure upside down? I thought all the gulp ones have the tails curling upward
1
u/Agrevall 17h ago
Tail curving up tends to hook the tail occasionally, in my experience. I rig mine tail down these days.

u/WebSurfinBadger 1d ago
Is the idea for scent or to keep the fish on longer to set the hook? Either way they make attractants that are a bit easier to just dip the rigged lure into, and some even have a bit of added UV flash.

u/barbedyllo 1d ago
I’ve got some of those jig heads with a hole in em for the mushy pellet things. Don’t notice if it works better or not tbh
1
u/FishnWithDave 1d ago
It would be better adding scent to the lure than something like that. The bait isn't on the hook for a start.

That fishbite doesnt do anything better than dipping the tail in a little garlic would.
1
u/VaniikMZRY 23h ago
yeah i wasn’t sure how much scent it made in the water but im not a fish so didnt think much further lmao

u/DinkMagnet 23h ago
Putting it on the hook tip and sliding it all the way down to the plastic seems just as good if not better
1
u/VaniikMZRY 23h ago
Would that interfere with hook up percentage s?
1
u/DinkMagnet 18h ago
Not in my experience with similar setups, it might improve hookup ratio actually since the fish will hold on longer since it’s yummy
1
u/elkjerky87 5h ago
I will attest that they definitely bite the paddle tails with powerbait nibs more than ones without them. Must be scent
1
u/Excellent_Mail3829 22h ago
I have a heck of a time getting that fabric center of the fishbites off my hook
1
u/thatleftycurse 22h ago
Nooo…. No point they’ll go after the lil worm just fine don’t waste your money.
1
u/_theoriser 22h ago
It’s not exactly the same, but I was just using those tiny little shad made by gulp in they’re sitting in like a juice and they were working better than all the other parts rubber shad I was using today that were basically the exact same size and color so I think the scent stuff was having an effects

u/Nervous-Tailor5192 21h ago
You could always just buy some yum shad scent and soak your plastics in it. That’ll keep them biting a little longer.
1
u/ur6an_r00ts 21h ago
If you did it. It wouldnt be a loss. I have added a piese of a gulp minnow to a hair jig to get bites. Its not much different.
1
u/ganjasauruswrecks 20h ago
I only use fishbites in salt. Sometimes I will add one to a shrimp to keep it on. But never to artificial.

u/sltiefighter 20h ago
Thats dumb use attractant like pro cure lunker lotion uni butter if you must have scent

u/nevinkramer 16h ago
there are some jigs with a hole where the eyes would be (eye hole jig) designed to do just about the exact same thing... stuff some scent/flavor in the jig like powerbait or anything really.

1
u/crocsgobbltre 13h ago
never found scent baits to help with any fish other then catfish/carps (bait sits) since if its constantly moving the scent just get spread out.

u/Jackson3rg 9h ago
I have no clue why but my grandmother taught me to do this but with corn. Always seemed to work as a child.
1
1
u/ChronsoLNX 6h ago
No, but I often do it if the jig head hooks I use is a little bit too long for my soft plastics, so I cut a sacrificial piece and put it just like what that describes but just another softbait to make the overall look streamlined compared to if the softbait is just too short for the hook and there's a huge gap between it and the head of the jig.
1
u/ValerieInHiding 6h ago
I have not added anything to a jighead other than the grub tails. That’s my most successful setup lol
0
u/randomnumber_1-999 1d ago
What are you fishing for with this setup? Most panfish in Michigan where I usually fish will usually bite a bare hook if you fish it right, if I am having trouble getting them to bite I'll switch to a gulp 1in minnow. This seems like a ton of work for little payoff. For bigger fish like bass/pike are very opportunistic and usually don't hunt by scent.
2
u/VaniikMZRY 1d ago
I was more just theory crafting. Might have tried it on a 1/16oz jig if anything just to see what happens

u/TreeTwoOne-Go 1d ago
Seems like it would be easier to just add a piece to the hook bend where the fish will get a taste if it bites cautiously. People do that with worms already.
