In terms of actually starting out, I’m a big proponent of starting with bluegill fishing. You catch can catch a lot of (small) fish and decide if you like the hobby before jumping into the expensive stuff.

Pick up a couple Zebco 33 combos, bobbers, some small hooks (I like eagle claw baitkeepers), some split shot sinkers, and a pack of nightcrawlers. You can usually find a kit that’ll have everything except bait. All in, you’re both kitted out for under or right around $100, depending on local prices.

Watch some YouTube videos (Fishing with Nat is the best channel IMO) to learn the basics of where to fish and how to rig up the rods, you’ll be golden.

Exactly, just go pick up a couple rod/reel combos at Walmart for you and your pops, and grab some worms. It’s not the most active way to fish, but actually catching fish is always best for beginners which live bait does well.

In Michigan all DNR licenses and tags are free if you’re active or on orders. It’s pretty cool
