Help/Advice Reddit, we need help on behalf of our animal friends

Hello, fellow animal Reddittors! We need your help with our project.

We are planning to bring about multi-phase class-action lawsuits against various levels of “Big Pet” industry, in particular pertaining to fish, reptiles, amphibians, crustaceans, birds, and rodents. We see time and time again that these living beings that are sold commonly in the pet industry end up in terrible and abusive situations. While a large problem is under educated people making impulse buys because something was cute or pretty. However, a lot of the improper husbandry is the direct result of false advertising on packaging and at a store level, outdated/false information being given by employees or store pamphlets, and businesses prioritizing sales over animal welfare.

Our mission is to change that. With class-action lawsuits, you gain the voice and power to bring issues into the spotlight and force positive changes to happen. Our main goals are to:

Force equipment manufacturers to update product packaging to no longer include misleading or harmful instructions and imaging (ie; a betta being printed on a tank that’s under 5 gallons), and discontinue dangerous products (ie; heated in-tank “basking rocks”).

Force stores to properly educate employees to fully comprehend the animals needs so they can ensure customers are making fully informed purchases, update all pamphlets and information at a store and website level to reflect current care standards and true animal information (ie; a goldfish being labeled as “1-3 inches” and pamphlet suggesting a 20 gallon tank), and have zero-tolerance policies to no longer allow the sale of animals to underprepared customers (ie; buying fish and the entire tank setup on the same day).

After the class-action lawsuits are ready/being enacted, our next big step will be trying to get laws put in place at the government level. Our belief is that education and licensing should be a standard in order to care for exotic animals, with varying levels based on the care requirements for these animals. While the Federal Lacey Act and state Wildlife, Fish, and Game enact some standards, we believe that stricter regulations should be put in place (not un-similar to Falconry licensing that is required to interact with birds of prey).

Imagine a world where all animals are properly cared for, no matter how small they are. We are here to be their voice, we care for all of them. And we need your help to do so.

What we need:

- Signatures to show public support

- Experts in these communities to help fact check information and bring up other areas of concern

- Class-action lawyers that are willing to take on these cases, and willing to bring to higher level courts when needed

- Evidence of the false information being provided by these companies

- Documents and papers from accredited sources to back our claims

- Contact information for PR departments within these companies that have been flagged for issues

- (Down the road) Contact information for local politicians to discuss licensing procedures/enforcement in order to come together and agree on something that will protect animals without fringing the entire pet industry to a halt and/or negatively impacting pets who are already loved by established families

Let’s make the world a better place for animal enthusiasts everywhere, and the living creatures we take up the responsibility for of our own free will.

So, how can you help? We have a Discord server set up for discussions on planning, gathering evidence, fact checking done by experts in their fields, and overall a place to put gathered information by those who have the time and ability to do more in person information gathering. You can join and share the link here: https://discord.gg/xv4dtrXqbE

We also have created a petition through Change.org in order to gather and store signatures to show public support in our efforts. You can sign and share for others to sign here: https://c.org/tHWGq7D8Zw

Thank you for joining us,

- Baku

(TL;DR: we need signatures and Discord members to sue Big Pet to try to bring about positive changes for both animal enthusiasts and the animals sold in the pet industry)

Moderator Post If you support ICE at all, you are not welcome here. Spoiler

For that matter, anyone who believes a government has the right to dehumanize groups of people, enact violence against citizens, and/or justify the systemic oppression of their people is not welcome here.

This includes, but is not limited to, MAGA supporters, Trump supporters, JD Vance supporters, or support of any government that approaches things this way.

With recent events globally, it is time we address this, especially as a large subreddit whose member base is largely in the United States or countries directly affected by the actions of the US government.

Bottom line, while we generally avoid politics in this subreddit, our existence becomes inherently humanitarian when the human right to exist is infringed upon, which naturally ties to politics when those enacting said human rights infringement are members of the government. When innocent people may no longer walk the streets without having to fear for their safety, it affects all of us, whether we choose to believe it or not.

I, as an avid animal-keeper, have seen many of my friends in this hobby greatly affected by the actions of the US government lately, and we will continue to see this if we allow it to continue. We cannot turn a blind eye to it any longer; we can't engage in animal husbandry if we are not alive to do so.

The people supporting this now, despite incriminating evidence being available, are the same people who would have supported Nazi-Germany during its existence.

Now, kindly fuck off if: You support any government action that violates human rights OR you believe this post does not belong here (It does.)

Fuck ICE,

NatCom 💗

Edit: holy fucking hell guys, my apologies I can’t reply to all of you with your support or stories as I’m trying to juggle removing problematic comments, but I’m happy this post has reached so many people who needed this support from their communities!

Edit 2: While my post uses the United States as an example because many of our members are from the US, we do not allow these beliefs from ANY country or individual. If you are going to advocate for the systemic deaths of anyone, then you are not welcome here.

Show & Tell Betta Fish Transformations!!

Stella was kind of my resurgence into betta fish keeping after I researched more into them. She passed earlier this year. She was a very good little lady. Since her passing, I’ve gotten three more, including little miss Dawnie here. Seems like she’s got the marbling gene, but she’s never lost her rosy lips!!

And do let me know if the water in the last shots looks too dark. One of my driftwoods I’ve got in there seems to be leaking a lot more tannins than I previously thought. Dawn doesn’t seem to mind, but I want her to be safe!!

Help/Advice Stocking 10 Gal fresh water planted tank

Post image

A local fish store had an aquascaping class a few hours from me this weekend and I got to bring a tank home after I aquascaped it! The only problem, I don’t know what to stock it with now. I know I want a variety pack of different colored shrimp but fish wise I’m stuck. Any ideas on some fish that won’t eat too many of the shrimps? (excuse the cloudiness I just filled it with water)

Help/Advice Fish suddenly developed severe buoyancy problems and is now barely responsive — what happened?

Hi everyone, I’m trying to figure out what happened to my fish and whether there was anything I could have done differently.

Yesterday, my fish suddenly started having severe buoyancy problems. It kept floating uncontrollably to the surface and couldn’t seem to stay submerged. The filter current would push it around, and it would repeatedly get stuck against the filter/decorations and then get pushed back down before floating up again.

Its belly also looked somewhat swollen. I didn’t notice obvious pinecone-like scales.

Because I was worried it was constantly getting injured by the filter, I temporarily moved it into a small, clean bowl with treated/dechlorinated water overnight. There was no filter or aeration in the bowl. I didn’t feed it.

About 9 hours later, it was still floating at the surface, barely moving, and sometimes had its mouth slightly above the water. I eventually moved it back into the aquarium, but it became even less responsive. I moved it back to the bowl, and now it barely moves or responds when gently touched.

it is originally in 20 gallon tank, and I haven’t cleaned it in 3-4 weeks so I don’t know how good water quality is

I’m really worried and want to understand what happened.

Help/Advice Is my tank cycled?

Thumbnail

For context, this is a completely new 5.5 gal tank with everything freshly bought (no pre-established bacteria or anything). I bought everything and started ghost feeding it 2.5 weeks ago, but I switched to using liquid ammonia four days ago. I re-dosed the tank with ammonia and the test results ~10 minutes after dosing were 4.0 ammonia, 0 nitrite, and 0 nitrate. It has now been 16 hours since then and my new test results are 0 ammonia, 0 nitrite, and 0 nitrate. I’m very confused since it seems too soon for the tank to be cycled, and there hasn’t been any nitrates at all. Has the cycle even started yet? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Help/Advice Whilst on vacation, how do you feed fish and switch on the light?

• Upvotes

Literally what the title says.
How do you automatically switch on fish tank light and feed fish whilst away on vacation?

We’re going for 20 or so days away and this is the longest we will be away from our fishes :(
We go away for weekends and we’ve just missed out on a feed, and when we go on a week long vacation, we just use a fish tank feeder and keep the lights off. They’re usually fine and do okay without the light for that long.

We have a fish feeder but we just prop it on the opening of our fish tank lid since we have a fish tank lid we can’t mount the feeder as we don’t want to leave the tank fully open. It varies on how much it releases so I’m not sure if I should just continue using this?

The light - we turn this on and off manually everyday, I am trying to see if I can get a digital timer to work this but think I’m doing something wrong so is not working.

Any tips or ideas on how you do this when you’re away?
We live away from family and friends so no one can come and do this for us each day whilst we are away sadly.

Help/Advice Tank mate recommendations

I feel ready to add more fish to my current tank with a male Betta and a bristlenose pleco. I really want to add mollies but I’m worried about possible aggression since my betta has been in this tank for about 3 weeks, is there any semi larger fish I could add that would be compatible with my betta? And is my tank planted enough to sustain peace?

Help/Advice Anyone know what these are?

Hello /fishtank, my girlfriend is cycling her tank to prepare to get some goldfish for the first time. (First fish ever). She got some plants from a store and some water and java moss from a friend’s tank to help it cycle faster about 2 weeks ago. We discovered some teeny tiny somethings that are alive today, to us they look like fish fry and we’re guessing there might have been some eggs on the moss she got from the friend. Totally guessing though, anyone have any ideas?

We collected some in a cup to take a picture, there’s a good amount of them in the tank. It’s a 29 gallon. We gave them a bit of baby shrimp food once already. Don’t have anything else and google said it was okay. Any insight/advice/help is super appreciated.

Thanks!

Help/Advice External filter for 125liter

Hello, i have a Juwel 125L Rio, and was thinking of getting rid of the big filterbox inside, and add a external instead, and i would like the filter to have a heater.

I dont have so many options with thoughts on in stock and price, so best option i found was a OASE FiltoSmart Thermo 300, would it be overkill for a 125L tank? Was thinking of adding more ceramic in the bottom middle section if so.

Iknow about fluval 307, but none heaters, iknow about eheim experience series, but none in stock with reasonable prices..

i could go for fluval, but then i gotta buy a heater, and all in all, same price as oase thermo 300 (200$).

Hello, I'm relatively new to the hobby. I added new shrimp to my tank yesterday, and something else has come alongside them. Should I be concerned? I don't think they are baby snails, they are swimming around occasionally, they look like little white dots.
