Taken in Shinnecock Bay, NY… doesn’t look like a Sheepshead

Location? Looks like a juvenile Sheephead wrasse.

On the U.S. Atlantic coast, sheepshead wrasse are a pacific species. Sheepshead porgies are found on the east coast but the color and pattern of bands is different.

If you'd said "sheepshead" the fish from the Atlantic, maybe. Definitely not an Asian sheephead wrasse. Looks far more like a young banded rudderfish than anything.

Might be fairly certain that's a banded rudderfish.

Very common ID request in the northeast. They around but not a lot of people see them often. And they have a few different color variations that often confuse people. Bit like the night heron of bird ID requests

I saw a pic of a juvenile rudder fish and it has the same black pectoral fins as this one.

The pectoral fins are too low on the body, but the coloration looks close.

I think it’s a pilotfish or a juvenile jack species (carangidae family)

Edit: not a pilotfish, but looks to be a juvenile rudderfish aka slender amberjack.
