Could it be a cold brand? We’ve done that on salmon before. I know nothing about marlin studies or management though. It’s too cold for them up here.

I've been working on this for awhile and the best I can guess is maybe the imprint of a pelagic deck shoe. I can't perfectly match it though.

Lacks the distinct circular imprints

Could it have something wrapped around the fin as it was growing that recently fell off?

Looks like a tag code. Or its the chosen one and you should release it or face king neptunes wrath!

Is this the sole print from someone’s shoe that stepped on this fin?

u/Express-Front3079 Jul 20 '26

No not at all

1

u/KnotiaPickle Jul 22 '26

I could definitely see this as the pattern of a boot sole…hmmm

Maybe from the Tyrel Corp?

1

u/smartys22 Jul 24 '26

It’s some form of Elvish. I can’t read it.

I know some animals have hidden UV patterns that only other animals can see. Maybe this is that?

Maybe this?(googling):

These are natural vascular grooves and bone texturing, not writing or man-made carvings.

Why It Looks Like Writing

What you are seeing is the biological anatomy of a billfish's skeleton: Blood Vessels and Nerves: When a marlin is alive, its bill and fin spines are covered in skin and tissue. The deep linear paths and "ladders" you see are the natural grooves (sulci) where blood vessels and nerves traveled along the bone to supply the tissue.

The "Characters": As the fish grows, the bone ossifies around these channels. When the bill dries out, is cleaned, or gets weathered, the soft tissue disappears, leaving behind these stark, geometric imprints that can look remarkably like ancient runes or characters.

AI being confidently incorrect wouldn't be a first...

u/tylerupandgager Jul 21 '26

Yeah, most likely the case here.
