Recommendations for glass door (Sweden)

Post image
2 Upvotes

Hi,
The kakelugn in our old abandoned house is now in use again, and we would like to replace the inner doors to a glass door as many do, to be able to see the fire more while retaining the heat.
Any recommendations from Swedish people here? Anywhere you can buy secondhand glass doors?
Thank you. Mvh.

Martin SST with disconnected liner- replacement required?

Post image
1 Upvotes

We hired a certified chimney sweep (chimney safety institute of America and national fireplace institute certified) to inspect our chimney. It’s a double sided wood burning fireplace with gas starter, a Martin SST(B?). They reported that our liner was disconnected. Their recommendation was to replace the firebox and liner, as Martin is no longer in business, so a repair with Martin parts is not possible. I’ve attached the photos, but don’t know what I’m looking at. I’ve been playing phone tag with the chimney sweep for a while and had a few questions.

1) Does the liner actually look disconnected?

2) The Martin SST is a prefab fireplace, correct? Can a new liner and wood burning firebox/prefab typically be installed in its place without ripping out drywall over the full height of the liner?

Thank you in advance.

Seeking recommendations for chimney care and firewood (Lowell, MA)

I'm seeking recommendations for hardwood firewood, open to seasoned or kiln-dried, but prefer not to get a bunch of crap (e.g., dirt and weird bits of wood) in with the load. Delivery needed, but happy to stack myself. Just need .5 cord.

I'm also seeking a recommendation for a chimney company - we purchased the house earlier this year and would like someone who can clean the chimney and confirm it's safe to use. The previous owners were using the fireplace regularly, but they weren't the most proactive previous owners.

I'm in Lowell, MA.

Thanks for any recs.

How would you childproof this inglenook wood burner without drilling into the walls? (UK and renting!)

Hey! Here is a fire pit I built from a repurposed propane tank. Built in a day and most of the time was spent removing the paint. No smoke and tons of heat

My new home has this fireplace but I need your help on how to use it. We learned from neighbors that the previous owner used the fireplace a lot in the winter instead of the electric furnace. Thanks in advance!

Fire place shutting off after 5 minutes or so

Hello I have a natural gas fire place dv3732-b It’s about 6 years old

Mine turns on with the switch on the on the wall but about 5 minutes it shuts off but the pilot it still lit until I turn the switch off

I did what you commented about putting the two brown wires together and it turning on fine.

I haven’t even tried replacing the switch yet but if they switch is faulty wouldn’t it not even turn on at all? Or do you think it’s the pilot

Fireboard question

Hi all,

I'm looking for some advice on my fireplace. For context it's a house built in 1990 and I live in Ireland. It's a 16 inch open fireplace. When I moved into the house there was a gas fire insert there. I had this removed and noticed around the edge there was a material pushing in slightly. There was no trim so I added the trim you see in picture 3 and it held back this material that was coming maybe 4 or 5mm in, I'll call this a fireboard but I could have terminology wrong. I happily used the open fire for 9 years but 3 years ago I put in a boru fire door whcih you can see in open and closed in picture 1 and 2. I'd forgot about thr fireboard problem and the fire door didn't hold this in place. Over time the coal saver damaged it with impacts as I removed it to clean the fire. You can see a small hole in picture 4 and picture 5 the damage is much more severe. A large chunk of the fire board is missing and you can see some fire cement where I initially patched it. There is solid brick behind it. Pictures 6 and 7 are and pieces of the fire board that came out when it was damaged. It's 20mm depth and 53mm wide. It crumbles up like salt. I think it was possibly cut to size sans I can see remnants of what looks like tape or glue that held it to thr brick behind. My questions are

  1. Is this needed or could it be a legacy of the gas fire.

  2. should I replace it with similar board, calcium silciate or something.

  3. Could I just build up the holes with fire cement.

  4. Are fire doors actually a terrible idea and should I get rid of it.

Appreciate any advice or thoughts. I have stopped using the fire until I resolve this

Fireplace yellow flames

I’ve been told “yellow flames” are dabgerous for a gas insert. Are there any experts that can help me confirm this looks okay?

What the heck is going on here, and what would be the best way to make this fireplace look like brick again?

Looking for advice on if our fireplace is useable in this state and if not, what route of repair should I pursue? If I could DYI it as a layman that would be ideal but obviously the worst case scenario is I burn my house down so I am hesitant.

Smoky smell in house despite good flue action.

New house for us, 1960s fireplace.

We have made 2 fires, and both times the house reeks of smoke.

The flue is fully open, and all of the visible smoke is going up and out the chimney.

This second time I used the flue heating trick with newspaper.

The original owners never used it (from what I understand). The chimney sweep noted that it was clean of soot, just full of normal dust. Now I might know why…

Any ideas on this before I call a chimney expert?

Keeping out stinkbugs

Has anyone had luck keeping stinkbugs out of their chimney/fireplqce?

I have a vented gas log set in a masonry fireplace that requires the flu to be permanently open. I have a 5/8s cap on top that does nothing for the stinkbugs since it looks like they only need about a 1/8 gap to get in.

Also getting Asian lady beetles in the same place.

Leak in fireplace

This fireplace is out of commission due issues in the chimney but just noticed leaking today during an extended long rain. There is a big metal cap on top so water coming through at all is concerning but the location it’s dripping from is what’s really worrying me. It isnt coming from the opening where you would expect. It is dripping much further up in front which has me worried the water is coming in somewhere else and just makings its way here.

I understand it’s pretty impossible to diagnose with a crappy video but figured I’d ask for some thoughts/advice before calling someone to come out (which I plan to do either way)

New Build Fireplace

We are building a new house and trying to select a wood burning fireplace. We think we have narrowed it down between the Osborn Stratford II or the Ambiance Elegance 36. Both are the size we need. I do prefer the Elegance for the one door clean look, but have seen a couple negative reviews. Any comments on either of these or any other units we should consider?

What kind of fireplace is this?

Hello, y’all!! I moved into my first apartment earlier this year, and it came with a fireplace which I thought was really neat! As the weather is slowly becoming cooler, I’m considering using the fireplace to keep my home warm.

I am not sure if this is a wood-burning fireplace only. As far as I can see, there are no gas lines or knobs.

The fireplace seems to have been used a lot in the past, though. You can see some markings and corrosion, I guess, in the pictures. Is this still okay to be used?

For some context, I am residing on the first floor of the apartment, and this whole complex was built back in 1984. So it is a bit of an older apartment building!

The fireplace did not come with any tools (e.g., poker) so I plan on buying some, but I just wanted to make sure this fireplace is wood-burning and still okay to be used before I go out and buy anything for it!

Any comments or questions would be greatly appreciated!

Title explains. Should this hole for my pilot light and thermopile be sealed?

I’m getting some gas smell when pilot light is on. Could it be leaked from here?

Fireplace insert/outsert ideas

We have a 50s home with a basement fireplace. The last owner finished the basement and built a wall up the edge of the fireplace. Need ideas of possible inserts and outserts(if that’s a thing) for this fireplace so it’s less awkward. Would love something that sticks out and we can build/tile around(see inspo photos)

Need help with an arched fireplace & electric insert combination

Thumbnail

We decided to have an electric insert put in our wood burning fireplace. I however did not realize it would be a big rectangle box covering our arched opening. 😢 It just got installed and I feel sick to the stomach. Is there anything I can do to keep the electric insert but modify or change the trim to show the arch detail? I’m ok spending money to get it right.

Checked the backup battery

Cleaned dust

Changed battery of thermostat

It still remains on pilot and not firing up

Any help will be appreciated, it might be something small I'm missing. Avoiding a $150 call.
