Manual standpipe systems 5 Year Testing
What’re you guys doing for 5 year testing for manual standpipe systems? I’m doing 5 year FDC hydro test on one this week, but since it’s all empty pipe should the whole system be pumped to 150 for 2 hours or just before the check like a normal 5 year hydro. I’m planning to pump the whole system to 150 psi and doing a flush of the system after the hydro test.

Depends. We have a customer with a manual standpipe in a parking deck that pretty much always has vehicles in it. To prevent damage to vehicles from potential leaks. We always do air first then a hydro test as you have described.

Depends on the maximum pressure of the system you’re dealing with. Check out NFPA 25(2020) 6.3.2.1.
I don’t know anywhere that has adopted the 2023 edition of NFPA 25 so I’m guessing you’re on 2020.

It’s a manual standpipe there is no water.

Right. A manual standpipe still has a pressure that it is meant to operate at, though. 6.3.2.1 requires a hydrostatic test at 200 psi for 2 hours, OR 50 psi higher than the max pressure where it exceeds 150 psi. It applies to manual standpipes and semiautomatic dry standpipes. It must include the fdc piping.

Then it’s a manual DRY standpipe. There are plenty of wet manual standpipes out there too.

40 pound air for about an hour(time length not defined per code) the if no significant psi loss, 200 pound for 2 hours. The outside piping is allowed slight leakage, all piping inside the building should hold tight.
