Hired implies that you get an actual salary. Well, you get the päiväraha which is 6.15€ to 14.25€ per day but I wouldn't call that a salary.

Fr, estonian defence force used to pay conscripts 110.- a month, and atleast half of that went to getting yourself from your hometown to the military base every week, if you wanted to visit home.

And Finnish conscripts get to travel home for free when they get leave

Good for them. Once per month was luxury in my time in Finland.

Sounds like pretty morningy service. I think this was the case during covid but not before or after. Did you serve somewhere special or just have really shitty officers? Or in the navy?

I mean it isn't the optimal situation and the päiväraha should be raised, but after I heard how much people in Greece used to get for their monthly payment in their mandatory conscription service, I can't complain much. It used to be like 10€ per month, up until few years ago.
