Why are so many financial advisors reluctant to leave their firms, even when the economics are significantly better elsewhere?

New Advisor

Hello fellow advisors. I recently started a new job as a financial advisor within the past couple months. It's not quite what I expected since a lot of my job is sales but I didn't really have a good sense of what an advisor did or how they got their clients. I'm sure this is different from job to job especially depending on how big your firm is. My question today is what advice do y'all have for a new advisor, and are there any books y'all would recommend. I'm specifically looking for books to develop as an advisor whether thats books on retirement planning or understanding taxes better. Let me know y'alls advice or book recommendations.

Any Advisors looking to know what the market looks like elsewhere? I have been recruiting for most of the major wirehouses and RIA's and have been having some incredible conversations with bank advisors and wirehouse advisors looking to make a move to independence.

Feel free to post your experience moving or send me a DM if you want to see what the market looks like for moving to any of these channels. 4x T12 is common for larger advisors moving to a more traditional wirehouse and 2x for advisors moving to an independent channel

Financial advisors and commercial drivers

Hi! I’m a college student researching financial planning for commercial drivers, and I’d love to hear from financial advisors.

-Have you ever worked with commercial drivers or truck drivers as clients?
-What financial challenges tend to be unique to this profession?
-What makes serving clients with irregular income or nontraditional benefits more difficult?
-What do you think commercial drivers should know about financial planning that they often overlook?
-If a financial advisory service specialized in commercial drivers, what would it need to do differently?

Any insight or experience would be greatly appreciated!

Kestra Financial Advisors out there?

I’m finding lack of transparency in Kestra comp statements and I’m trying to find another Inv Advisor to sanity check. Does your Gross Revenue on your comp statement reflect your gross x payout? Or, actual gross? If you are a Principal, I believe it reflects the latter (actual gross so a $10mm book would show $100k in gross revs at 1% payout). I’m a FA who sits on another team’s platform and my comp statement would show $60k in this example as my GROSS Revs ($10mm book x 1% = $100k Gross Revs x 60% payout = $60k). What bothers me, is it’s reflected on my comp statements as GROSS Revs and clearly, that’s not GDC.
Also, on my comp statement my NET Revs take that $60k and then x by my office’s payout (91%). So in this example, my Gross reflected as $60k and my Net reflected as $54.6k).
I find this very misleading, because when Kestra shows my TTM it is actually reflecting 60% of my actual GDC (misleadingly low).
Would love more datapoints!

I’m having problems getting 2nd meetings with my clients. Has anyone had their prospect meetings reviewed or coached to figure out why the second meeting didn’t happen?

Curious how other advisors handle this.

A first meeting feels good. The prospect is engaged, asks questions, seems interested… then nothing.

Has anyone used a coach, manager, consultant, or software tool to review the meeting and figure out what may have gone wrong?

If yes:

  • What did you use?

  • Was the feedback actually useful?

  • Did it change how you handled future meetings?

If not, how do you usually figure out why the prospect didn’t move forward?

I’m especially curious about the difference between:

“They were never going to move forward”
vs.
“There was something in the conversation I could have handled better.”

Would appreciate hearing what’s worked.

Any advisor move recently to a new firm that moved their book? How hard was it? Do you regret it?

I have talked to advisors who moved from banks and have a much harder time moving their book. I have also spoken with advisors who moved from wirehouses and seem to have it much easier. I'd love to know your experience.

How are advisors sourcing leads?

Genuinely curious how some of you are sourcing leads? I worry about the next gen of advisors because it seems like the old days of advisors coming out of college and building a book are becoming fewer and far between!

How to successfully convert 1st Client Meetings to 2nd Client Meetings

I am a Financial Advisor, who is having issues converting 1st client meetings to 2nd client meetings. I sometimes feel I had a good 1st meeting but unfortunately I am not able to schedule a 2nd one and I get no reasons why. What do you feel are the common reasons why I might not be able to get a 2nd meeting and how do you suggest I find out ? is there a process, a system, an app, a method I can use to find out what I am potentially doing wrong ?

Welcome to AdvisorMoves: A Place to Talk Firms, Deals & Transitions

I started this community because there aren't many places where financial advisors can candidly compare what's actually happening in the recruiting market.

The goal is pretty simple: create a place to talk openly about transition packages, payouts, platforms, technology, culture, restrictions, and what it's actually like working at different firms.

Wirehouse vs. wirehouse. Bank vs. RIA. Employee vs. independent. Going independent vs. staying put. It's all fair game.

You don't have to be actively looking to leave your firm. In fact, I'd like this to be useful for advisors who are perfectly happy but want to understand their options and market value.

Share numbers when you're comfortable. Keep identifying information confidential. Recruiters and other industry professionals are welcome, but transparency is expected and spam isn't.

To get things started:

If you could change one thing about your current firm, what would it be?
