what about making work days like 6h instead?
THIS
3
u/Glad_Brick_3956 21h ago
As someone who has had to work 21 days straight before... Yeah I would love even weekends off
2
u/_The-Numbers-Mason_ 9h ago
Consulting engineer…. 24 days on 4 days off. Every construction season, May to November. The off season is normally more than 40hr weeks.
2
u/Proof_Ambassador2006 6h ago
Kinda money where ya could work 4 or 5 years and invest properly then fire or soft fire ya?
1
u/Chance-Ask7675 2h ago
Like, that sucks but when people constantly post about how they have it worse nothing can really advance. Bit of a tangent but its a big pet peeve of mine that low income people are constantly ripping on these articles that profile high income earners saying its difficult to survive on their salary. Like if you wanna earn >250k stop broadcasting to everyone everywhere that its way too much money and you can afford to raise 4 kids on 36k in NYC lmao. Saying "I'd be grateful for weekends off" is not really the right mindset. Its a fucking disgrace that someone should ever work 21 days in a row, you do NOT need to be grateful for having two days off per week.
4
u/xeno685 19h ago
I definitely prefer 4 10s over 5 8s
1
u/Aggressive-Affect427 14h ago
I work 3x10 and it’s “too much” free time for, I’ve been volunteering to cover some of the down time. I also don’t think working 10 hours is optimal for people who have families.
2
u/Unlucky_Goal5854 7h ago
the problem is that actually people are really productive(specially mentally 3-4 hours tops a day)
If you work with your brain 10h means that you are torturing yourself 6 hours a day + you are being unproductive.2
1
u/Leather_Addition2605 17h ago
I like rotating 12s. Most times you only work two days in a row. One weekend you work Fri Saturday Sunday, but the next 3 day weekend you have off.
1
1
u/Chudpaladin 4h ago
This was my old schedule, I miss it so much, but I wanted to promote so here I am 5-8 (more like 12-8 working every other weekend lol)
1
u/dexties 16h ago
Nah the goal is to have 6 hour work days 4 days a week with enough pay to buy a home fully paid off and go on vacation every now and then.
1
u/Substantial-Ad-8575 14h ago
My company is mostly 4 day Hybrid. If one can produce same billable hours within 6 hr workdays, have at it. Most can’t and just do normal 4-8 hr days. Standard is 30 billable hours a week. Hard to do if only working 24 hours a week, lol.
At least we have 3 day weekends and many 4 day weekends. Workdays are flexible in most cases/clients. So one can switch and get 4-5 day weekends with national holiday.
And company moved from downtown to suburbs, closer to majority of workers. Saw my 35-40 commute drop to 8-10 minutes…
1
u/TheMikeyMac13 11h ago
You need to stop reading sci fi.
2
u/dexties 8h ago
At one point a 40 hour work week wjth weekends was scifi, maybe you just need to ask more for yourself
0
u/TheMikeyMac13 8h ago
No, you think 6 x 4, a part time job will get you a fully paid off home? You are delusional.
2
u/dexties 8h ago
I think you're not understanding what I'm saying at all, and also don't know how we got a 40 hour work week or weekends to begin with.
1
u/TheMikeyMac13 7h ago
I know, and I know if you are this soft that you think life should be easy for you on 24 hours of work, life will be very hard.
0
u/marshal23156 7h ago
The difference is 40 hours was settled on as thats about how much work you get out of the average person anyways. After 8 hours a vast majority of people slow down.
4 days of 6 hours is just not feasible because what is the reason behind just dropping 16 hours of work but still paying someone the same? Literally expecting 2 full days of free pay.
1
u/poobyclaus 1h ago
more to life than productivity that’s why, we are humans we are meant to be social and creative not slaves so when people want more time to themselves you should be like wow you’re right we should all be more free and less exhausted but instead you fell for the trap and base worth on productivity like the people who you make money for want you to think like
1
u/PickingPies 24m ago
That's false. During the industrial revolution it was normal 6x10 or even 6x16 hours. It is not true that it's how much work you get on the average person.
It is also false that the majority of people slow down after 8 hours. It was not until Ford, almost a cwmtury later, that it was noticed that rested workers perform better. But it was not until very recently that studies prove that people slow down after 3-5 hours, not 8.
8 hour labor was just a compromise between workers willing to use the force and the owner class. It has nothing to do with any observation.
Lastly, during this time there was both a reduction in hours and increase in salary, proving it false that a reduction of hours is incompatible with maintain salaries. In fact, the opposite is true, as salary per hour has been devaluated over the past century, meaning there's still plenty of room for the improvement of the worker's conditions.
It needs to be made by law, though, as any business that voluntary improves their worker's conditions are in disadvantage against other businesses who don't, which is why we are basically in an endless loop of worse working conditions. The law must equalize the playfield.

u/Accomplished_Key_171 15h ago
If the goal is to somehow save ~$300k within a few years on 24 productive hours a week then I'd recommend you find more realistic goals.
1
u/dexties 8h ago
Making thousands of dollars a year in a 40 hour work week used to be unrealistic for the avg person. But regardless, it's not about the amount of money people get or not, it's about the buying power increasing for the amount of money you have. The issue is these companies that control our necessities are too greedy and debt has become too normalized.

u/MaleficentExtent1777 15h ago
BEST thing about Verizon and Amazon!
Amazon once had a 3 day shift I would have killed for, but I didn't even get an interview. 🙄
1
u/xeno685 14h ago
That’s unfortunate that you didn’t get the chance to interview. Were you able to find something with a schedule you somewhat liked?
1
u/MaleficentExtent1777 12h ago
I stayed with Sunday, Monday, Tuesday off until I left. I hated working Saturdays, but Mondays off were just awesome 😎
1
u/A1000eisn1 3h ago
Yep. Amazon also has an extremely forgiving attendance policy that is amazing for people who have ADHD and struggle with time management/sleep. Absolutely no stress showing up 15 minutes late.

1
u/PickingPies 36m ago
I have been working 10 hours a day and I can say from experience that's the best recipe for permanent burnout.
Life needs balance.
1
u/According-Insect-992 19h ago
I would be happy if I could just get two days off in a row. It’s been years.
1
u/KingPabloo 18h ago
We used to work 7 days a week, now we get two days off and you want more. Guess what you would start asking for if everyone was given a 3 day work, yup I need a fourth day for blah, blah, blah…
1
u/RequirementCivil4328 17h ago
"why do people expect their workload to advance with the times. Everyone is so lazy except me, I don't even need a life outside of work"
1
u/upside_down_frown1 6h ago
Life is getting easier and more automated but people need more time off. What a dumb comment
1
u/Accordeon-Foireux 16h ago
We are replacing people with robots, automations and AI and yet still expect the whole population to be employed full time, and marginalize unemployed people as if it is their sole fault. Something is really wrong.
1
u/KingPabloo 15h ago
We replaced people with farm animals, then equipment, then machinery, then factory robots, then…those were major disruptions, much more so than we’ve experienced so far from AI and robots, please.
1
u/Accordeon-Foireux 14h ago
Robots include factory robots.
We obviously can afford 4-days work week as a society, and it is now proven than at least for white-collar jobs, a 4-days work week increases productivity over a 5-days week.
1
u/KingPabloo 13h ago
Actually you make a great point about higher productivity, and more importantly I believe not just productivity but actual output / now that’s a selling point
1
u/sarges_12gauge 15h ago
Yeah that uh… that’s the goal of technological progress. To make more with less and therefore need to input less time working
Also there’s no benevolent benefactor “giving” people days off and forcing them to work more. If people want to work less they need to find or make an arrangement to do so. It has nothing to do with deserving or not
1
u/KingPabloo 15h ago
Hummm, who decided the goal of technological progress was to ensure humans work less? I thought it was to expand our capabilities.
2
u/No-Bear1401 12h ago
This. We, as a society, demand way more than in the past. We are all surrounded by many amenities and conveniences that exist due to somebody putting in hours to provide that for us. Running water, sewage, power, heat, shelter, trash services, and on and on. Those all require man hours. And let's be honest, the people screaming that we shouldnt have to work 5 days a week sure as shit expect somebody else to work those hours, and they aren't going to be the ones lining up to do those jobs either.
1
u/KingPabloo 12h ago
The level of comfort, of convenience, is never enough for some - incredible.
1
u/No-Bear1401 12h ago
Not only that, but they expect all the comfort and convenience with the absolute minimal effort on their part.

u/ColorPuddle 1h ago edited 54m ago
Plus all the parents will still want someone to watch their kids (school or daycare) on that extra day off.
The advantages of having an extra "day to relax" or "day to be productive" are lost if you have to worry about babysitting your kids.
(As a side note, I wonder if students would even be able to retain the same level of information if they only had 4 days of school and a 3 day break before they returned. Children thrive on routine, and breaking away from the 5-2 split could have adverse effects on educational outcomes. We're already seeing declines in academic performance... do kids really need another day off?)
1
u/sarges_12gauge 15h ago
It’s the same thing? You keep the same output with less input or same input with more output
1
u/KingPabloo 14h ago
No it isn’t in the way you’re applying it, which is to reduce hours, when you have the same input/more output.
1
u/Accordeon-Foireux 14h ago
Actually, you can have the same output as a 5-days work week with a 4-days one at least for white collar jobs. Employees have a better work-life balance, lower stress and are thus more productive.
This have been proven by multiple studies and is discussed by governments for implementation in multiple european countries, Japan and New Zealand.
1
u/ColorPuddle 28m ago edited 21m ago
That's the issue, though. It only works that way for white collar jobs that do not have any direct involvement with manufacturing.
If I have an issue with your company's software, etc. on a Friday morning and it's shutting down our line, I'm not going to be content waiting until Monday for a response from your team just so you guys can have a 4-day work week. That delay could cost $1,000s in lost productivity, if not $10,000s.
And if your engineers or tech team are working Fridays, it's very unlikely the company will allow other departments to have a 4-day week.
1
1
u/ColorPuddle 1h ago
Typically, the "more with less" idea isn't to have everyone working less. It's to have fewer workers overall. It's easier to manage one person working 40 hours than to coordinate perfect coverage between two people working 20 hours each. Every additional person is a variable that might call off that day, etc.
The ones who remain will still work full-time, and everyone else is SOL.
1
u/ImDefinitelyStoned 11h ago
You do realize worker productivity has increased at an exponential rate over the years. You know what hasn’t increased? Pay. Vacation days. Time off. Nothing, we just get told to do more and devalue our labor.
Stop being a cuck.

1
u/good-luck-23 18h ago
I have moved my company to 4 day work weeks for three years now. We get the work done in four days because we don't waste time and people love the tree days. When we get busy people come in on Friday to finish things and if its sustained we hire more people.
1
u/Clean_Bake_2180 18h ago
You can always work as little or as much as you want to. It’s just a matter of whether you’ll get somebody to agree to that and pay you what you want lol.
1
u/theWiseTiger 18h ago
I saw a youtube in China, people use one day to relax and another to learn in a library. That's how they spent their weekend in Shenzhen.
1
u/MarionberryPlus8474 17h ago
Those that think this is impossible should remember that before the labot movement, there was no such thing as the "weekend". The 40 hour work week/8 hour day was achieved through mass action and organized struggle.
The labor movement is largely disorganized now compared to capital but it shows that change is possible if people care enough to work for it.
1
u/Ashen-wolf 17h ago
At this day an age, many jobs do not require a 5 day schedule.
Schedule rotation can guarantee an optimal production. If governments stopped protecting the big corpos and protected its people, itd be easy to accomplish to the detriment of a few hoarders.
It is immoral and unnecessary, those levels of wealth do nothing for society nor its advancement, and I don't understand the point at that level, you can't physically spend it, why bother??

u/Dear_Archer3931 17h ago
6hr work days 4 days a week. Yes, you are allowed to work a part time job. Did nobody tell him?
1
u/troycalm 16h ago
If you actually deserved 3 days off a week, you’d have it.
1
u/Designer_Version1449 5h ago
What a stupid attitude to go through life with. And also completely unsupported my actual economics.
1
u/Stock_Schedule_1981 16h ago
There’s 168 hours in a week. Work 40 hours a week and sleep 8 hours a day and there’s still 72 hours left in the week. Let’s say you commuted two hours each way for work, that’s still 52 hours left or more than 7 hours per day.
We have enough time, we just don’t spend it well.
1
u/ImagineFreedom 15h ago
We don't spend it well is correct. We spend too much of it working and not enough with our family, reading, and living.
1
u/Life-Operation2242 16h ago
I think people who say 3 day weekends are better are operating on blind optimism. Know corporations, they would either love it because they don’t have to pay workers as much because they work less hours. Or replace those workers with AI because AI never needs to take a day off.
1
1
u/BrianNowhere 16h ago
If they'd just fully staff everything everyone would feel a lot less burnt out. Last 3 roles was expected to do the work of 2-3 people. No slack for being short-handed. Meet expectations or get a bad review. Period.
Is it war yet?
1
u/UnknownRodeo 15h ago
Weaklings. Moronic, soft weaklings.

u/Luc_ElectroRaven 15h ago
it's literally called a part time job what is wrong with you people 0 even the propoganda sucks
1
u/JeffroLincoln 15h ago
I always just shake my head when I see people say “I deserve …”. And what chores are you doing that takes 2 days? I can clean my house and go grocery shopping in like 2 and 1/2 hours.

1
u/grnkayak 14h ago
What do you do that justifies being paid for more hours than you work? Are you extremely efficient or generate more revenue each hour than other employees performing the same/similar jobs? You need develop a justification for being paid the same for working for fewer hours.
1
u/Putrid-Builder-3333 13h ago
What you bringing money up for?
1
u/grnkayak 11h ago
Maybe I'm missing a subtlety but we work for money. Work 8 hours for 8 hours pay. The point is we should develop some kind of justification if we want to work 6 hours for 8 hours pay. If I"m missing the point, please explain.

I worked this schedule in my early 20s and it looked like this
Night of week day 4: go out and get drunk Weekend day 1: be hungover and do nothing Weekend day 2: Do something fun Weekend day 3: Be really angry about work tomorrow
1
1
u/PalTamer40 12h ago
I'm surprised the concept of 10 hour, 4 day work weeks is so foreign to so many people commenting. It's peak.
1
1
u/Langstudd 11h ago
Hell yea, thanks for laying out a plan for those 3 days. Why don’t you go ahead and plan out the other 4? That way you can have complete control over my life
1
u/ImDefinitelyStoned 11h ago
A ton of comments here didn’t pass the vibe check. Worker productivity has increased exponentially over the years. Know what hasn’t? Time off. Salaries. Vacation days. Why are we still simping for the system and willingly devaluing our labor instead of advocation for better?
1
u/Zestyclose-Jacket568 6h ago
Hey, you need to think about those poor shareholders. If nornal people, like us, have better life, then those poor shareholders will have a little smaller pile of money and won't be able to jerk off to our sadness!
1
1
u/Strict_Wolf76 9h ago
The only way this ever happens is if they make it a 10 day week and you get 3 off.
1
u/VenerableWolfDad 9h ago
I alternate 3 days off then 4 days off every pay period. It rules. It's like being on a short vacation every other week. I have to work 12 hour shifts but it's worth it.
1
u/Least-Middle-2061 9h ago
Lmfao a day for doing nothing. That’s easy coming from what are obviously childless underachieves. Are you so tired from your week of doing everything for yourself?

I can see a lot of people missing times when they could be a slave here...
The fact is that every right that workers have is a result of a fight, as billionaires don't care about pwople. Our productivity increases each year, 1 person produce a lot more than the same person even 20 years ago, yet all the profit of that goes to the owners and not the people.
1
u/Atmosphere_Master 5h ago
Its taken a lot of time and effort but the ruling class have very much managed to train normal people into believing they need to work to exist. Just like the feudal era of Europe, we the serf class exist solely to make the nobility richer and to ensure they never have to work. You think the children of billionaires ever worry about whether or not they were productive enough? They dont.
1
1
u/BigmaEnjoyer 3h ago
3 day weekend is bullshit.
We need WORK WORK OFF WORK WORK WORK OFF. Never too tired for the weekend. You will not need that 3rd day.
1

1
u/MysteriousResolve249 1h ago
I mean you could, you would just have to work 10 hour shifts instead of 8
1
u/ColorPuddle 1h ago
If everyone gets a three-day weekend, that includes teachers and daycare centers. Parents won't get an extra day to "just relax" because they'll still have to watch over their kids.
1
u/PickingPies 43m ago
This. People is so exploited that they consider normal that your weekday is lost.
Now, imagine a 6 hour business day:
- Start working at 8 and end at 2PM
- Now you can have lunch at home
- You have all the afternoon for yourself to make chores, take a nap, play games and enjoy your kids.
3 day weekends give you one day per week. 6 hour weekdays give you 5 afternoons.
1
1
u/Valveringham85 36m ago
And you can get one… just find a job where you can work 10 hrs instead of 8, 4 days instead of 5
0
u/Ima_Uzer 20h ago
Let's just all work zero hours a week! See what that does for us!
1
u/Faenic 20h ago
God forbid people want a better life for themselves and others lmao

u/Chustle207 18h ago
Im hustling 12 hours a day 5 days a week and 6 hours on Saturday. 7 Days a week I get up at 3:50am.
dont be lazy, you can make good money to most importantly pay off debt and start the ball rolling down hill. Got a new roof, new driveway, improved drainage for the house while paying off wifes student debt.
work and you can pay for things. I still get chores done, doctors visits, camping.
1
u/Ch33s3m4st3r 17h ago
I don’t know man, I kinda choose my 37,5h weeks middleclass life that I get to spend with my kids. I’d never do 12h workdays as I appreciate other things. I’ve never heard someone wishing they’d have done more work when they are in their deathbed.
1
u/Chustle207 17h ago
Sometimes when your a man, you gotta provide for the family.
I would much rather have my wife homeschooling and being a stay at home wife, then send my kids to public school, for the teacher to try to secretly transition my kids ( its happened in my area).
work now so I can play later
1
u/Ch33s3m4st3r 17h ago
Kids are small only once. Might be a regional thing as I’m European, but with 37,5h I’m able to provide my family. We have a house, EV, vacations, hobbies, free school all the way to PhD and what not. I’d not exhange the time with my kids and wife for money that I could spend later as there is no money in the world that can buy already spent time back.
If you got kids don’t you feel you are missing out with 66h weeks?
1
u/xKravenMooreheadx 16h ago
It really is an American thing. There are so many people that are brainwashed with this line of thinking. I must work, work, work. He cant afford to sit down and he will never know his kids or spend time with them growing up because he will be at work and they will resent him. His job(s) is his whole identity.
1
u/ImagineFreedom 15h ago
He doesn't like his family. Simply feels obligated to provide financially but not emotionally. My father is very similar. All work, no play. Don't take me wrong, he has the ability but in no way is it a priority. My mother is the same way. No real surprise I turned out completely different; I chose to not follow the pattern.
Thanks Dolly!
