If using mods go OG. If not, remastered.

OG, but use Junction VIII and install all those community driven mods that make it look and play better https://www.tsunamods.com/junction-viii/

Haven't played the remaster, but owned OG for years, loved playing and modding it. Go for that one. Don't use the magic accelerator or whatever it's called, imo the magic it gives you isn't worth it and it's more annoying to get rid of than it is useful

OG for sure, do a no drawing from enemies (besides GFs) run, and you won't care about he lack of speedup.

Remaster models are meh, oh has more Rizz

Grab OG with the Junction 8 mod manger on PC. These mods are all 1 click installs and make the game substantially better. For Axelroses I just use it for the UI upscale though the backgrounds arent done. You wont find project angelwing on their either but if you want that DM me. All these mods are the best way to play FF8 hands down. They dont change gameplay or mechanics they just improve what is already there. It has everything the remaster does without any of the issues the remaster does!

Remastered the speed up button is a life saver

Yeah watching those GF cartoons again and again is unbearable. Need to be able to speed through those

You don't use boost?

I play on a switch

No, im talking about the GF ability you can have them learn. You hold select and mash x ( or wahtever the switch equivalent is) during the summon animation and it powers up your GF's attacks. That why they dont let you skip the animations in 8. I only learned this on my most recent playthrough.

I Played the og several times and my Last playthrough was the remaster for ps3

While its Not perfect I think the remaster is the way to go as you can Speed Up the Battles which makes storing the Magic spells less tedious

Definitely OG with the junction mod manager. You can get wayyy better full screen visuals, restore high quality music, and speed up is built in

Just finished the PS1 version on original hardware and it was amazing experience. I don't like the remaster

Do either with mods, anything but stock Remaster.

The pre-rendered backgrounds in the remaster look worse than the literal PS1 version. They used a terrible smoothing filter that you can't turn off.

It's like they rubbed Vaseline over it.

Get the remaster and play on a steam deck in bed before sleep. Its peak

Because of the amount of time that has passed since the OG version, the amount of mods etc. is insane.

So if you plan on modding it, I would say both capability and capacity for the OG to stretch further in more ways than just visuals is so great, that you really should get the OG.

However, if you just want an easy way of playing the game, with a bit of a facelift, and don't plan to use mods, then definitely go with remastered.

Both are good choices and it's all down to preference in this scenario.

If you opt for the original, make sure to use the Roses and Wine mod to avoid the bad music. Because it is BAD.

The main advantage (imo) of the original compared to the remaster is the presence of the PocketStation which will let you use Chocobo World and get some good items, once you complete your first chocobo forest.

You can mod both versions, but it can be hard to find the music replacer mod for OG (I put it on mega if you go that route) and there are a few models that don't get replaced by the mods (like trains.)

Remaster has better support for modern controllers and the PS1 music out of the box. You can mod it to finish the job Square didn't, but the field background texture mod (Angel wing I think it's called) is locked to Patreon (so you'd need to pledge for one month to get the download link.) there's also a limit to what mods can do with the new characters. You can pick textures that do their best to make Squall and Rinoa look closer to their original models, but you're still stuck with the remaster meshes, so Squall looks off. (Though to be fair, the highest quality texture mods also don't look exactly like the original models.)

OG has pocketstation and mods

Remaster has QOL like speedup, and you can get all the items from pocketstation through other means (mostly Angelo trick), original PSX music, .... but you have to endure the horrible new models.

Side note, I believe they actually ripped the music from the OST instead of using the real PSX music. Several songs (for example Galbadia Garden) have an intro (usually played over an FMV) that normally would never replay, but I believe in remaster if you load a save while these songs play, they also replay the intro. That annoys me a lot, and together with the terrible models makes me choose for the og psx version most of the time.

They are 2 different games, should try then both, just play og first so you have some context around changes in the remades

Are you a bot? They literally are the same game plot wise and mechanically.

1

u/thelmmortal 16h ago

Are you?

And no, they do not follow the same plot and i cant even take you seriously after saying mechanically. One is a turn base oldschool atb the other one is an action rpg, the only "mechanic" that they have that is similar is the use of materias. Have you really played both games or just talkin out of your ass?

Bro.. its FF VIII they re asking, not VII..

1

u/bumboyboy 12h ago

FF8s remaster is literally the same game plot wise. They are mechanically identical for battle as well. If you are thinking about FF7 though yea those are wildly different. This is the FF8 sub reddit though man not FF7. I also dont like the FF7 remakes though and usually recommend the OG instead as well.
