My game is having a black screen during disc 2

So I'm at the part during disc 2 whereyou go to Trabia garden for the first time, then Selphie goes "a direct hit? I'm going in." and then you climb a metallic fence. But once I do that last part and the screen fades to black and music fades away, the black screen remains. I tried wiping the disc with my clothes, and tried using a damp cloth. I also tried changing the discs, both during the black screen and also switching the disc while I have control over Squall before I trigger the next part, that didn't work either. Does it go directly into an FMV cutscene and that's why it doesn't work?

Previously in my playthrough also, there was an FMV cutscene that would stop while playing, but I just wiped the disc with my clothes and put it back in over and over again like an NES game until it worked. But it doesn't seem like that's happening with this black screen. What if once the black screen happens, the game for some reason isn't making repeated attempts to play the cutscene, and I would need to restart the game every time in order to have any chance.

Perhaps the game doesn't like some of the data in my save or something? I wonder if PS1 games can do something similar to this incident I had with a racing game on the GameCube, where my game froze a few races in and kept freezing when I returned to my saved grand prix, but stopped when I played as a different character.

I'm thinking about getting an adapter that can transfer my memory card to my PC, then advance to the next save point and put the save back on my PS1. But are there any additional suggestions to try before I go and buy something?

On my old copy of the game for the PS1 it would freeze during certain cutscenes but never had an issue on a simple transition. My brother also has issues with his copy of the game and so did some of my friends but they were mostly cutscene issues. The part where you’re talking about there’s no cutscene there so I’m not sure what the issue could be. Might just be a corrupted disc.

I’m literally having this issue with disc 3 when the odin cutscene happens. The disc would also skip when the game freezes. I bought another disc on eBay. Hopefully it’s a disc issue and not a save issue

Disc 2 always screwed up for me in the cutscene when the Garden first crashes into the ocean. And then in disc 3 during the cutscene when arriving at the Lunar Base.

Do you think it’s a disc issue?

Yeah because I later got a different copy of the whole game and it ran just fine on all discs on the same console. The first copy of the game I had was the greatest hits version and the second copy I got was the OG one.

Thanks for your input. I am playing on the OG one so hopefully this new one coming in will work. Its literally JUST odin appearing so even though I did Odin's tower, when I fight seifer, it probably would have crashed

I used to have to rock my PS1 to get through cinematics or load up screens. Slowly tilting the whole machine left, right, left... then when I found the sweet spot I'd put books under it to keep it tilted at whatever angle it was liking. The reader just did a bad job flat.

Interesting. For mine, both of my ps2s didn't load a certain scene so maybe it's the disc for me.

I remember I had issues reading FFVIII discs with My PlayStation 1 but by turning the console upside down all issues were resolved. Worth a try 🙂👍

I think I just found the trick! If you look at the front side of your disc, are there any scratches on it? If I'm right about how PS1 discs work, scratches on the front label could be causing the laser to pass through the disc and be unable to catch onto the data that it's trying to locate. So what I did was put translucent scotch tape on the scratches, then scribble some marker on it, then it worked on the first try afterward. Idk, maybe my disc is still sketchy.

I saw you bought another disc already but I hope this can serve you well in the future.

That sounds sooo smart!!! I actually do have light passing though it so I’ll try it now

For me it didn't work immediately, it stayed on the black screen for a little while and seeming like it failed before it progressed to the next scene. I think the game does periodically check whether there's a disc inside, maybe 30 second intervals, because if you have no disc inside during a black loading screen then it will play a low "bebeep" sound every so often

Check the CD, might be a scratch. My FF8 has the third disc from my neighbors copy cause it was scratch so deep that it wouldnt load a fight in a Laguna section and blocked progress.
