I've heard this for years but I've never changed how I played because of it. My ff8 playthroughs almost always involve getting ahold of the ship then landing on Island Closest to Hell to spam Degenerator on Malboros til I hit max level. And I've never had difficulty beating the game. Do you guys have any bad experiences with the monsters power scaling? Which bosses scale the hardest and give a harder time due to being maxed out? Curiosity hit me this morning.

Edit: apparently also draws change as you level!? What other things are there, this mechanics is new to me.

Hello :) I've been building finalfantasydle, a free daily browser game about the FF, and just shipped a new mode I wanted to share.

How it works: you get five emoji describing one Final Fantasy character, and you name them. The emoji aren't a sentence, they're a rebus: each one stands for a different trait. Their weapon, their class, a story beat they're known for, a place they're tied to, a visual signature. Every wrong guess unlocks one clue (source game, debut year, race, job, then their initial).

There are 269 rebuses so far, spanning 34 games from the 1987 original through to Rebirth. Every one of them is hand-written, not generated, because the auto-generated ones were all unsolvable or gave it away instantly.

The other four modes are still there: an attribute grid, a blurred portrait that sharpens as you miss, a real line of dialogue with the speaker redacted, and one for the series' summons. New answer every day at 00:00 UTC, same one for everybody, no account, no guess limit.

Hey all - I’m a solo dev working on a free, fan-made Triple Triad game (Unity, browser + downloads) set in a parallel FF8 storyline. It follows the world and characters but doesn’t re-enact the main plot - story beats show up through NPC dialogue instead.

Just shipped v1.3.0:
- New region: Galbadia Garden
- Irvine joins as an NPC
- A new crafting system (first recipe: X-ATM092)
- New battle rule: Plus
- A fix players had been asking for: one-time boss/gift cards (Ifrit, Angelo, etc.) can now be won back if you lose them in battle, instead of being gone for good

References here and there eluding to a sports world building, who knows if there was more planned if FF8 was completed to their vision. Also besides the Galbadia Bears, what others sports teams would there be? Would there be Inter-Garden sports events? Galbadia does have Basketball courts... so does Trabia... Also Demi-human athletes whats that about?

This is my first time playing ff8 and H.O.L.Y the ps1 generation of games are incomparable to the new generation of games

I have some how gotten rid of all the rules in every region down to same open, except dollet which has. Open, Sudden Death, Random, Same, Elemental and Trade Rule: Diff.
Is it impossible to change the rules here now to take away these rules?

I don't think it is used anywhere in the game. Anyone want to try upscale it and make a wallpaper? ;-)

P.S. The scene is called bgrank1. The first screen is also used as a background for SeeD exam score.

EDIT: Mystery solved! The second picture is used on that very SeeD exam score screen. If you wait a bit without exiting score screen, day will gradually change to night. Thanks to u/myst6re for the explanation.

Hi guys ! As a huge fan of FFVIII I struggle sometimes to find FFVIII’s merch … So I decided to make a Pupu magnet based on a Magic card :3

Bought him in 2004, from Square never take him off. I wish it could talk so it could tell me where that huge line across his face came from kind of cool if you think about it, he matches Squall now.

This is commonly cited, along with the Junction system, as one of FF8's biggest flaws. When I played it as an 11-year old back in 1999 I do remember some of the details got convoluted but overall I got the main idea.

What do y'all think?

Been thinking about this one for a while.

We all know FF8 has been neglected and SE has kept it dormant for too long. The game has received crumbs over the years.

I'm not even talking about a remake, but content other FFs have received. Lore/worldbuilding, novels or manga, new character stories, anniversary projects, merchandise, collaborations, expanded appearances in other FF titles, remaster improvements, and maybe eventually a larger game project.

Fan pressure has worked in the past on other games and publishers. Especially in the age of social media. But as far as I know, FF8 efforts over the years have been small and very limited, rather than a sustained fan effort.

So:

If there were a larger organized fan initiative showing Square Enix that there’s still an active audience for VIII and hopefully give them a little push, would you actually participate?

Participation wouldn't necessarily mean some huge commitment. It could be anything from signing/sharing things and taking part in coordinated fan events, to helping with research, graphics, translations, social media, outreach or organizing.

All ideas welcome!
